"Nothing changes if nothing changes." I've been where you are. Tired, jaded, mean. God, I was there just yesterday. And I've found the perfect cure for it: Just go out for a walk and smile to a couple of people when you happen to lock eyes with them. Just do that. And if it feels right, compliment one (or some) of them. Don't wait for a response, just do it and walk away. And on days where even that small gesture feels like a gargantuan endeavor, just remember... "I like you just the way you are."

Dedicating one's life to ministry is hardly something to be proud of. Believing in ancient, tyrannical myths and the childishly immature idea of salvation and an after-life is embarrassing and reveals that underneath the squeaky clean image lurks a toxic fraud. It also shows that Mr Rogers really did spend his life in a world of make believe and tricked a generation of children to think that his fantasy world was real even though he did not directly preach his insane beliefs to children. The fact that many, if not most, parents entrusted children to this guy because they falsely presumed being in ministry makes you automatically an honorable person is truly sad. Embracing the lies of Christianity is nothing to be proud of or to admire, and trusting someone spewing this stuff is irresponsible intellectual surrender.

We have learned in this culture, of recent decades, that if we don't quickly answer the person, they will go on, and our voice won't be heard. We have seen that people have little patience to listen, that they expect immediate and timely replies, and that if we don't reply quickly, they stop listening and draw their own (usually inaccurate) conclusions. We have to hurry if we want to be heard. Of course, in our private moments, we also realize that anyone unwilling to let us speak at our own pace is not honestly interested in what we have to say, and that we shouldn't exalt what others think of us, because they are not our Maker, nor are they invested in our lives for the long haul. People patiently have waited for Mr. Rogers to speak because of their respect for Fred, but for others, they may not have been so patient. Too many people have reduced human contact to making others jump to attention when they are addressed. That's not a proper life, or genuine interaction: it's a power-play. If someone walked away before Fred had a chance to answer, I'm sure Fred would have taken it with grace.

I was too old to appreciate Mr. Rogers when he first aired, but my little sister adored him. She was part of the first generation of viewers. Years later, when he died, she was quite sad. She called to tell me of Mr. Rogers' passing. And while, I expressed some compassion for her sadness and for Mr. Rogers, I concluded by saying, "Wow! You're still stuck on that guy." She responded very quietly with "He was very reassuring." And that he was. I never forgot that my sister said that. I remember it with some sadness that perhaps our family wasn't sufficiently reassuring to her. I know that as a "big sister," I certainly wasn't. So thank you, Mr. Rogers, for taking care of my little sister and all the little children whom you touched---most of them now adults. They were lucky to have been in your neighborhood. They haven't forgotten you and never will.

My Mister Rogers moment happened when I was a self-absorbed high school teen. I had tuned in PBS, killing time, waiting for a later show on another channel. That day, Mister Rogers had to deal with an apparently dead Guppy on the bottom of the aquarium. Instead of roughly scooping it out and flushing it down the toilet, he mixed up a small tank of lightly salted water. He placed the fish into it, hoping that would revive it. It was evident that the fish had "left the aquarium," so he took it outside, dug a grave and interred it. The fish was treated like a well-loved dog or cat, not a disposable animal. He had a reverence for all living things, which makes him a Great Man, in my humble opinion.

@@Otokichi786 When I was young, I had wanted a dog, but that wasn't an option, so I was allowed to have some guppies, and while disappointed that they weren't a dog, I was glad to have them. My parents didn't show me how to care for them, and I was only 6, so they died, and I cried. My parents didn't care: they saw the fish as disposable, as not mattering, they saw it as a nonevent, like throwing a tissue away. It took all of 30 seconds out of their day, and I was left standing, crying, in the bathroom. Parents that don't care are not a blessing. I was 12 when I first discoverd Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood, and I had never seen such behavior before, that nurturing demeanor. I had just changed the channel and was standing in front of the television, instantly caught up by that nurturing manner, and one of my parents walked down the hall and noticed me standing there (it had only been seconds), and they laughed, scoffing. They hadn't even seen what was on the screen from the hall, their behavior was mystifying and bizarre. Perhaps they recognized Mr. Rogers' voice, I don't know: I had never heard of Mr. Rogers before, so it was all new to me, but clearly such a show was not safe-viewing in that house, given their behavior. During those years, I probably watched the show only 4 times, but I never forgot that nurturing demeanor. Parents that don't love their children aren't parents; they were just corrupted people. (So readers know, no commenter should try to defend them; I know what my parents were.)

Mimi C There is no point in saved people going to the lake of fire “to help the poor souls that are lost there.” There is nothing anyone, including God, can do for those poor souls. They are doomed to an eternity of pain and suffering separated from God.
@gracewright80385 жыл бұрын
Jay Joy Being different is exactly what God wants His believers to be. We are not to be followers of the world. I am not trying to make anything negative here. I simply stated facts. Mimi C made an ignorant statement about life after death. I do know what happens after death because it is clearly explained in God’s Word. No, “there’s nothing wrong with wanting to help people become better and happier...”, but, while they are here on earth. After they reject God and die physically, there is no help for them. To suggest that someone would want to be a Mother Teresa in Hell is ludicrous!
@gracewright80385 жыл бұрын
Jay Joy Yes, we all deserve to be understood in a perfect world. No, it’s not at all possible that after people die God would let anyone “help”the unsaved. You see, there is no purgatory. If there was, God’s Word would have told us about it. The Bible has a lot to say about Heaven and Hell and what happens when we die our earthly death. Yes, God cares about all His children and tells us about His love in the Bible. He gives each person a chance at a loving relationship with Him that will last an eternity. You can begin a wonderful, joyful relationship with God right here on earth or you can choose not to have God in your life. But, the decision is made during your earthly life. You don’t get another chance in a place called purgatory. Yes, I’m sure millions of people will regret their choice, but they can’t redeem themselves because it’s too late then. These God deniers will have an eternity of regret, pain, and suffering without God to call on for help. Do you know why Mr Rogers was so kind and loving to everyone? Because as a teenager he made the decision to accept God in his life. Mr. Rogers was a perfect example of someone truly filled with the Holy Spirit which enabled him to be like God’s Son Jesus Christ our Lord. His life on earth is told in the books Matthew through John. I am sorry to hear that you don’t believe in God. Perhaps you just don’t know about Him. Jesus loved you so much that He came to earth to die for you, in your place, in order to forgive all your sins (“For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God” Romans 3:23). so that you wouldn’t go to Hell as punishment for your disobedience (“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” Romans 6:23). God is offering you a free gift in His Gospel of Grace. Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose again on the third day (l Corinthians 15:1-4). His blood is the total payment for your sins. The moment you believe in your heart, God will forgive you and save you by His grace. You will then be sealed with His Holy Spirit, which makes you His for all eternity (Ephesians 4:30, ll Corinthians 1:22). You will become changed, a new creature ( ll Corinthians 5:17). No works such as baptism are involved. Jesus did all the work for you. You only need to believe in what He did. FAITH+NOTHING If you decide to accept God’s gift I will be happy to discuss this further with you. Just let me know...

I've never seen a KZbin video before with zero thumbs down before this one but I don't think it's possible to give Mister Rogers a thumb down. Fred has such an infectious and genuine laugh about him, and you can tell he puts an incredible amount of thought into every word he says. I don't know if we'll ever see anyone as kind and thoughtful and empathetic again in this lifetime. Thank you Rick for sharing just a little more of his wonderful mind into this world.

I LOVE Fred Rogers. He is one of my idols but to be honest, his mannerisms do not make me calm. I am slightly unnerved by his total gentleness when I see it. you can tell there is something brewing underneath and that this type of behavior takes practice. He is so well-practiced! He puts other people's feelings before his own and sensors what he says as to not hurt anyone. That is powerful and something to be admired and to strive for. You can see how a practice like Buddhism can be able to cross over to other belief systems. Someone so mindful. I wish there was a Fred Rogers mindfulness class. I guess I need to re-watch all of his shows. Fred Rogers is plain ol' awesome.

Interesting insight. I couldn’t judge because I didn’t know him personally, but I kind of feel that he was a naturally reserved man uncomfortable with interviews. Maybe he wasn’t as at ease with people as he was portrayed. It seems like he’s trying very hard to be patient and friendly, like he doesn’t want to talk. Idk. Loved his show though. I’m just looking at body language.

I agree - he must have worked on this consciously for years and years and then must have gotten this good at it. He chooses every word carefully and thinks before he talks. Lots to learn from this awesome human being :) also he is very intelligent

He is so correct about childhood memories of being read to by a loved one. My mom and my grandmother use to read to me and I can literally time travel to that time.
