Doctors have long known that childhood trauma often plays out again in adulthood. But new studies suggest that early adversity actually affects physical health across a lifetime. The study is called ACEs--the Adverse Childhood Experience Scale, which lists ten stressful and traumatic events that can happen to children. Proponents of the study are calling on pediatricians to consider life events as they diagnose and treat children, with the goal of improving adult health and longevity by helping the children recover from early trauma. Produced by Emmy® winner Beth Dolinar, the documentary shares the stories of those whose lives were forever changed by childhood trauma, and shows how the Pittsburgh medical community is working to reverse the trend.

It's just so hard to let go. Letting go and forgetting makes me feel like I'm letting the person get away with it. But I'm so tired of thinking about it. My sister and I were sexually abused, verbally tortured, beat with cable wires and enslaved under my mom's ex boyfriend. She knew about it...but did nothing!!! Then I finally found the courage to go to school and tell the principal. 25 years has passed since then, but I still cry about it. I'm looking forward to healing.

I have been reading and reading and reading. Yet, I still find it so difficult to speak. And this art, the rusty objects triggers memories and seeing them wrapped gives me a sudden relief.

"Even if the dog doesn't like being brushed, he would never let on..."🤔 I am pleased that Service Animals and Emotional Assistance Animals are helpful to those who benefit, as they lack an Emotional Assistance Person, and often for very sad, unfortunate, and valid reasons, such as trauma. Lest, however, we forget that any utility these sentient beings have to we humans is NOT WHO THEY ARE. They are beings with needs and feelings and if we teach them to not express their respective needs and feelings, what have we done TO them? Perhaps it's possible for mutuality, as dogs need play, exercise, and stimulation....and time to be dogs, yes? I've heard of a local organization which takes Service Dogs to dog parks and the like on a weekly basis. Nice, but not nearly in accordance with the needs of the Sporting and Working Breeds. It's a shame that the ol' Hound Dog is not up for some of these jobs.

My mom experienced trauma (so did her dad), and while she was good to me, I've definitely always carried anxiety and depression throughout my life. We've both suspected it could be trauma that was passed down.

It takes money unfortunately to get quality trauma- informed help/therapy unless one finds places that take state insurance (Medi-cal) or are free for the poor and underserved communities.

"It looked to me like a ship being tossed about the sea and I was hanging on for dear life for way too long and what I realized was that I needed to let go." Time to unfurl, indeed! Such Great story telling. Keep up the good work, Beth.
