Yeah, it's just a smart tactic. There's nothing wrong with snagging a fish as close to the boat as possible, and it's not an exploit. It even makes sense in terms of physics. If you are reeling a fishing line towards you, it takes work (Energy measured in Joulles), and the shorter a distance that is, the less effort it takes to complete that action. The math behind that is using hooke's law (F = kx) to make the expression which is under a defined integral that represents the distance that the fishing line is being reeled in, I believe.

Probably the ones I'd get from ruins, but not too many of the same type

Just use a total variety of 6 unique gems plus two green gems and the Pearl. Make sure to use boats and not rafts when the crab claws are active. I haven't tried a lot of the other combinations, but red and blue seem like bad ideas in general, orange is only for multiplayer, and purple or yellow are situational based on whether you're using sleep strategy or a large number of boats.

No. The celestial orb spawns on day 11 and onwards, but it would only help with character swapping. Character swapping is something that normal celestial altars are able to unlock anyways, so waiting on the orb can only waste your time in the grand scheme of things. The current seedless world record is a day 10 victory, which makes full use of character swapping to skip the moonstone event, farm resources, and move the altar pieces across multiple characters. Oh, and this is Orbless Lunar Siphonator mode if that was a question too. Per speedrun guidelines.
