I switched from openwrt to dd wrt using this method: openwrt -> factory firmware -> dd wrt I made a short tutorial what i did: - download latest stock firmware with correct version and extract - rename for ex. from wr841nv9_wr841ndv9_en_3_16_9_up_boot(150310).bin to wr841nv9_tp_recovery.bin - download and install tftpd standard edition installer - switch off router - set lan adapter ipv4 to 192.168.0.66 - open tftpd -> browse bin file -> show dir -> server interface choose 192.168.0.66 - go to router -> hit reset power on hold reset 3 seconds - the router should be rebooting ... - access router with ip 192.168.0.1 admin admin - you can upload ddwrt, openwrt firmware - default ip will be: 192.168.1.1

BTW, there is a revert-to-stock image available for this router nowadays. These can be flashed from the UI to revert. dd-wrt.com/support/router-database/?model=WR841N(D)_9.x

Just in case someone had issue where it doesn't start uploading the firmware, be sure to check if the TFDPT32 had being allowed to pass through the firewall. You should get a message when you first start the program, if not check if your antivirus product (Bitdefender, Kaspersky, Avast etc) didn't block it in their third party Firewall. Just disable the Antivirus firewall and it should work, at least it worked for me.

Since this is a TFTP flash from the router's BIOS, this can also be used to un-brick the device (as long as the bootloader is still capable of performing this tftp procedure). If you are trying a different version, adjust the firmware file name accordingly (change the version number / add letter d / etc). Firmware file name wr841nv9_tp_recovery.bin Fixed Network Config IPv4 192.168.0.66 Netmask 255.255.255.0

For me it does not work With Version 10 the tftpd does not Show the transfering Pop up and Switches Automaticly to the Server interface 127.0.0.1 after the Router boots up. I can not reach the tp Link interface or the dd-wrt.

This video was a saviour! Thank You. I had flashed my WR841N with DD-WRT firmware, all done as you mentioned on the other video and everything looked fine too.. until I tried to setup the network configuration. The moment I applied my network configuration, I could not access the router firmware anymore, and funnily the WAN light never comes on. I think I would flash it again from scratch sooner or later. Would upgrading the firmware from 3.14.4 Build 131129 Rel.39318n be an issue while flashing? Thanks again.

Hello Mr. Lloyd. I can see you are quite active in the comments, so perhaps you can spend a moment helping me too (if you have the time of course). Long story short, I have DD-WRT on my TP-WR740N v4. Unlike other times I tried to return to stock, but the DD WRT does nothing at all and keep booting back to DDWRT. I tried your solution, even I found other people's tutorials where they tweak some settings, but I'm afraid no firmware is flashed. In the logs I can see the standard error message (error 2), after which it should start to flash the image, but this never happens. Do you have any ideas how to make it do it?

Disabled this component of the AV and it worked strait away! I didn't pay attention last night, in one of the articles from "trishtech" said that message to allow the program in the firewall will appear, since it didn't happen for me I had Aha moment. Avalanche Productions I recommend highly that you use the same file and exact same procedure as I do on the video step by step. If you have the WR841N Version 9 (V9) this should bring it back to the stock firmware. After that you can upgrade to which ever firmware version you want. Thanks.

Richard, thanks for the video! I was able to bring it back. Now, my real need is to access PIA through this router. I have to use the provider (Vodafone-it) modem. With the original firmware I can connect to the internet just fine using my TP-link hooked to the ISP's modem. But when I upgrade to DD-WRT for some reasons it won't connect to the internet. I assume it's a matter of configuration.. but I can't figure it out. Do you recommend anything? Thanks

+Andrea Cordani I think Vodafone is DSL and using PPPoE so you have to configure the connection settings under the Setup Tab > Basic Setup > Connection Type to PPPoE and fill in the proper user name and password there. +Andrea Cordani There unfortunately is no OpenVPN support on this router as it does not have enough memory for the feature. You could instead use the desktop client for PIA. They actually have clients for most OS's and smartphones. They work just as well but they do require being configured on each device. Thanks.

Daniel Costa Unfortunately web access is controlled by the web login portal. You can connect the router to that system but every new machine that connects to the router is going have to be authenticated by the web portal (log in) to get permission to access the Internet. Thanks

Question: I followed your first guide and installed DD-WRT with no issues. But I was curious if you have any internet connectivity issues? Frequently my network will just completely disconnect for a few seconds, all devices wireless and wired. The router doesn't appear to reboot or anything. I have tried the latest version of DD-WRT and it seems to happen less frequently, but still an issue. I also notice lag spikes in games and general slow / spotty internet. I was thinking of going back to stock and see if I still experience these issues. Bypassing the router and connecting directly seems to resolve the issues. Curious if you or anyone else have experienced this.

I was using the latest but I switched to the one this video talked about. I think sp24 v 2 or something. Its a few revisions back, I think from June. So far it does seem better, but i have been working and not using it a lot.

Hi fpsfreak, this is not working on my WR841N v8. I've downloaded the right firmware and set the right name (wr841nv8_tp_recovery.bin), set the right ip, disabled wireless, I've disabled all firewalls and antivirus, tried to hold reset button a little longer, run tftp as admin as well, but nothing happens. When powered up, power led and all leds flashes alternately. Do you have any ideia? Starting to get worried about my router lol

It is very important name of fw file and IP of computer 192.168.0.66. Example: wr741v4_tp_recovery.bin, stock fw name was with wr741"nd"_v4...

Followed procedure to the T, I get no response from the router, all the lights are on that should be, dang thing worked for a week then I reset it to factory settings as it started acting up and now I can't can't access anything. Just to be clear, you connect a cable from the pc to one of the four ports correct? And you should set the ip to 192.168.0.66? I do have a version 9.0. I tried two different Tftp programs, no luck, Tftp32 never gives me a log file and the only activity from it is I see it flip back to the default ip. Any other thoughts?

Tried it on my laptop and a Macbook too, no luck. I think something is fried as the port one light stays on all the time when the power is on.

An easier approach is to use the web revert located here. www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=85237&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0 You have to register and sign in, but once you do, you can find the v9 file (www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/download.php?id=30566) and just load the file via the dd-wrt firmware upgrade feature. No TFTP needed.

192.168.0.66 is the default IP address the router looks for a TFTP server to get the firmware. I know this because I connected to it with a USB to Serial adapter to console into it as it boots. I use port 1 because I know it works the others may work but I have not used them so I can't confirm that. Thanks.

The WR841N_V9_131129 firmware is not avaiable more :( I hate the new sessions for admin interface. I need to log wit multiple devices at the same time

Do a google search for WR841N_V9_131129 and you will see that there are many third party sites that the firmware is available on BUT this is a strong warning, you have no way to verify that the firmware is good (not compromised) or corrupted. So if you do get it from anywhere other than TP-Link you are taking a chance on bricking your router. Thanks.

IRAQI ARMY I don't use PPPoE on my router so I can't really tell you which one is the best for that. I find that doing a factory reset after flashing the router helps to make it more stable. The reset is done by going to Administration>Factory Defaults. When you do this you will have redo the settings on your router. I am using r27240 and it is working fine. You can experiment with different revisions to get the one that works for you. Remember you need to reset it after each upgrade. Hi Richard Lloyd! Thank you so much for your videos! I followed all the steps and it worked, but last week one of my flatmates reset the repeater and now I am struggling to reinstal everything.. My Ip adress is: 192.168.178.1 (primary router), so I set the Internet protocol V4 to 192.168.178.10 (and tried various other numbers like 192.168.1.10 or 192.168.178.2....), but it just won't work.. I followed all of your steps on dd-wrt, but in the end, the new network doesn't even appear in the network list. Do I have to set the tplink back to default? In the adapter settings, the lan-connection says "unidentified network" or the name I chose for it when I first used the repeater years ago, but not the more recent name I chose in the dd-wrt-settings. Would really appreciate some tipps! Keep up your great work.
