Salvadoreño | A Short Documentary by Will Ramirez

My family left El Salvador in 1987 in the middle of the Civil War that claimed the lives of 75,000 Salvadorans. This film follows my return to El Salvador to learn about the country's history, to connect with some distant family, and understand the future trajectory of this country.
The answers I found while making this short documentary were surprising. From the extent of US intervention in the civil war, to some violent family history I had previously never known. This is my story. An immigrant who has received infinite opportunities in Canada, but still exists in an identity crisis between the culture and heritage he was born into and the culture he has had to navigate throughout his life.
Though I am now and always will be Canadian, the fact remains I will always be Salvadoreño.

My parents left El Salvador in the mid 70’s in search for a better life in the United States. I visited the country for the first time in 2015 and I loved it. My Salvadoran girlfriend back then took me all over the country. I enjoyed it’s beauty and people made me feel at home.

I can't tell you how grateful I am for you making this documentary, not only because you beautifully captured the sights and sounds of El Salvador and its people, but also because you have brought together a community of people who can share their stories. I was born in the US in '97, so I'm younger than most here in the comment section. However, my mom grew up during the war, out in the countryside picking coffee. My uncle and grandfather, for reasons I will never know, went off to fight for the government. They both died in the war. My grandmother, like your late grandfather, was illiterate for most of her life. All of this would seem to put people down, but no, the Salvadoran is resilient. I've visited more than a dozen times, and every Salvadoran you meet will greet you with a smile, crack a joke, and offer to be of some help. It's a beautiful country and its people deserve better than what they have endured for centuries.

17 years, it took me 17 years to go back to El Salvador and it's so incredibly amazing how the neighbors still remember me. I felt so welcome and I visited so many places and never for a moment felt in danger.

I felt this in my core. My father came to the USA undocumented in 82. I have so much family still there that I don’t know. When you said you didn’t talk to your abuelo cause of your Spanish I cried because I too lost so much time and connection for that very reason. Thanks for taking us on this journey with you. I'm going through the very same things with my kids, I try and try to teach them where I come from the place i was born and how hard it's and all we've been through to be where we are now, My kids don't really care when I talk to them about my parents their lack of communication Cuz of the language barrier all they the very few times they talk to my parents all they say is si, bien, and that's it, I die to get them more involved in things from where I'm but they are so disoriented about all what has to do related to my background. That part when he said kot talking to his grandpa Cuz of his poor Spanish its what's going on with my kids and they don't value how important is for me to have my parents alive and enjoy them while I can .

I’m also from El Salvador, but came to the U.S. in the early 70’s. My mother brought my brother and I when I was 7 and he was 6. Listening to the song, “Mi Viejo” in this video just about did me in. I remembered most of the words but haven’t heard the song since my childhood. I have been back a couple of times over the years, but my husband and five adult children have never been. I feel it would be safe to visit now! I love my little country.

I've been to El Salvador twice when i was younger and never really bothered to learn the history, culture, or anything about El Salvador. Nice to know there are Salvadoran Canadians. I was fortunate to be raised in Los Ángeles in a community with a lot of Salvadoran families. My mom would send me in the summers to El Salvador and some if my best memories as a child. It was towards the end of the war and during the peace talks. I remember the blackouts and living near a military compound.

I'm Salvadoran right now living in San antonio Texas for the last 6 months I moved here because of the pandemic. Before that I was living in Miami beach Florida. I left San Salvador in 1985 around Christmas time cause the war , it was horrible to leave El Salvador because I love my country and I love being Salvadoran. My parents never really talk about the war besides the story of them fleeing the country but then again I’ve never really asked what it was like for them. Excellent documentary! I'm a Salvi American from NY. I can relate your journey in many ways. The last time I saw my Papa Geronimo, before he passed on, was in the mid 90's, he gave me a big hug and I felt he didn't want to let go. It was quite an emotional moment in time that I will always remember. Although our elders are no longer with us in the physical, our memory of them is what keeps them alive. We are their descendents, and am sure they'd be proud to see how far we've progressed. Their is still much work to be done, but the future is bright! This was such a beautiful documentary. Both of my parents are from El Salvador . I’ve been to El Salvador a couple times , and it’s such a beautiful country with such beautiful soulful people . Truthfully i teared up a little watching you talk with you grandpa , both of my grandparents from both sides are no longer here . I miss them so much , they’re so gentle & full of wisdom . Will, such a great documentary. I'm 2nd gen; born and raised in Toronto and so very proud of my Salvadorian roots. My parents moved to Toronto months before I was born (85'). I'm one of the fortunate ones that didn't experience the civil war, but I have been to El Salvador every 2-3 years since I was born. 2019 being the latest. I'm that guy that spends my time convincing my family and friends to go to El Salvador as they are too scared or not interested to go... Anywho, that portion of you and your abuelito brought back a lot of good memories I had with my abuelos from my dads side who have passed. As well as, realizing I'm not taking advantage of my abuelos from my moms side who are still here. Very eye opening to make sure I call them to see how they are doing and spend more time with them when I go back. Even just ask questions to find out more of my heritage. Gracias for making this documentary and representing El Salvador in a postive way. I'm hoping there is a part 2 in the works? lol

Wow, this resonates with me. 1st gen in Toronto too and only recently went back. There was definitely a gaping hole my my own history that I felt too. Thank you for this. God damn it man, I remember my grandpa came to visit me to the US, I was only 13, 1 year after he passed away. Am a pretty emotionless guy and this time I cried so hard. I use to talk to him on the phone, I was 17 and I saw my grandpa's phone number there and I called him, he never answered again. Even though I knew he was dead I insisted on calling him when I felt alone. And seeing that you grandpa was so so much like mine broke me, but know I feel happy, my grandpa shared with me his deepest secrets, he was my best friend, my mentor, my hero. By the age of 9 I was already living in my 4th country. I lived in El salvador from 86 until 89 moved to Uruguay as alot of salvadorian were escaping to survive. When the war was over we moved back to El salvador then to Guatemala then back and forth to ES and Guatemala until finally finding a home in Canada. I can't go much into detail because it's alot. Those whos parents fought in the war like my parents did know this very well. I love my country very much and have plenty of family that still lives there. I did go back to ES in 97 and in 2013 . Beautiful as I remember

Will Ramirez it went very well today. All being said about 60 kids watched the video on their own. They’re teens who are a growing up a lot like you. The most profound comments came from students who identified with the issue of not communicating with their grandparents and elders as they should because of embarrassment of their Spanish. Thank you for doing this. My parents too fled the war and moved to the US in the 1980's. I was born in California and lived there all of my life. I too had a hard time nailing down my cultural identity growing up. Felt American but I was obviously different. In recent years I've become interested in my ethnic heritage. Regardless now that Im older Im firmly rooted in my identity as Salvadorean American. I wish nothing but the best for the country. Despite not having been born there I know that its people are some of the kindest and hard working ive ever met. Also, Its very nice you got to meet your Grandpa and actually interact with him. The only time I went to El Salvador was in 2008 and I only met my Grandpa (mothers side) once briefly. We didnt talk much because I was young and he could only stay for a little. He died a couple of years ago. Both my grandparents on my dads side are dead so I only have one grandparent left.

We don't often get to see Salvadorans on TV and film so we end up identifying with the general "latino" culture, but there is much more that makes us uniquely Salvadoran that we need to celebrate!

Thank you for making this documentary. I am of Salvadorean descent and born in Los Angeles, CA. My mom left El Salvador during the civil war in 1983. I don't quite understand the history but you have brought a little more understanding and interest in researching more on the country that I essentially come from. My mother was an orphan and left to the U.S. and never went back. I have never been there but I have so many questions hope to have the opportunity to experience El Salvador too one day. I love this documentary. The chef, your grandfather, and you Will are my heroes of the story. I was born in El Salvador, I live in the US now, but I go back every year. To the Salvadorans who haven't been back, I will highly recommend to visit the homeland, and reconnect with yourselves/culture. While there, please support the local economy: stay at family hotels/bed & breakfast, family restaurants, go to the markets, not the supermarkets, and please bring back some lovely "artesanias". We have a beautiful country, the best part -- our people -- who need our support. Buen viaje paisanos!

I also grew up in Canada 🇨🇦 have been here over 30 years and yet I never forgot my roots my culture my language and over all my love for my country El Salvador 🇸🇻 I have a daughter who is half French Canadian and I though her my language my culture and brought her to El Salvador Many many times, she had the opportunity to see her roots and know her family there. People continue our culture continue to teach your children where they come from, that way our culture and our roots will continue to shine.. I just watched this....yes...at 3am. Firstly my condolences to you and your family. May your abuelo RIP......I know the pain you feel bro. Your doc just made me cry again.....I lost my last grandfather in March 2020 and I didnt get a chance to go visit in 2019. I am happy you got to see your abuelo before he passed and I am happy you were able to have that convo with him. I will always remember waking up at 5am to go buy pan frances and picking up a copy of the daily paper with him when I would visit. El Salvador is on the rise and the next generation like that chef will help change the country for the better. Growing up I would only hear people talk about the war and gangs. It bothered me because I knew the country was more than that. Our beautiful people. Our hard working people. The beaches. The climate. The food. The coffee. The fertile landscape etc. Elections this Feb28th will be the next tipping point for the country and my hope is for the world to see that El Salvador is the hidden gem of the Americas! I think people like you, me and all of us who live en el exterior have to support the next generation in any way that we can to help build up the country for all Salvadoreños. Like your guest Roberto Pineda said, the solution is investment and jobs. Security will soon come after the Feb28th elections.....along with education, healthcare and tourism. This was an awesome doc. I am a first-generation Salvadoran Canadian. My dad, his brothers and grandparents fled during the war after my grandpa who I am named after was killed by the military. They settled in Alberta and outside of my one uncle have never left. I along with my whole family were lucky enough to go and visit El Salvador back in 2012 and that will be a memory I will have forever. I was also lucky enough to meet my Grandma. But man those directions you were getting reminds me of the way my dad gives directions when he's in the passenger seat when I'm driving🤣🤣. Saludos de Edmonton.

Beautiful documentary. I’m also first generation and my family immigrated to Vancouver in 86 when I was only 11 months. I’ve gone back several times and I’m glad that I can connect with my family, culture and history that way so that it doesn’t get lost. I left Nicaragua in 1973 through the Venezuelans embassy as a political refugee when I was a teenager, sane year one of my friends fled ti el Salvador and was in the church when Monseñor Romero was asesinated. In my case, in caracas, i participated in political seminars in the same house where Napoléon Duarte lived while when he was a political refugee in Venezuela. Now, I live in Mississauga.
