My grandfather taught me to sharpen knives with hand stones when I was little. It really was a very valuable lesson. When he passed away, I inherited his sharpening stones and I've used nothing else to sharpen my knives or axes since. Someday, when I have kids, I hope to teach them the art of hand sharpening

Glockel you've missed the point. It's about nostalgia and retaining a skill that is being quickly lost in this day and age, not convenience. Plus, I have the confidence in knowing I can sharpen my tools in the field and not be confined to a power outlet, which I could be miles from when I need it.

issue with budget socket sets is they use "white metal" which tends to be a very cheap steel alloy, it works well for tightening things regularly but as soon as you stress them a large amount I have found they bust out the edge a lot, I have been using cheap sockets for the past month or so and I have had 5 bust out/snap on me, at no time did i use a cheater bar or stress them beyond anything i would put my good socket set though. My point it if you need to you can usually get by with a cheap socket set but if you have hard bolts (on something like an older car or engine) you will probably want to invest a little bit more money on a set with a good warranty or reputation. ( i have had good experience with mastercraft from canadian tire. a stanley set has broken out on me a few times, but apparently they have a lifetime warranty,) I think the key is to set your expectations low for a cheaper set.

Something you likely already know, but worth mentioning for anyone who's not familiar with power sharpening. When you're removing material, ALWAYS used the coarsest bit you can control. The coarser the belt, the less heat it generates per unit of material removed, particularly given that the larger chips carry away a lot of the thermal energy along with them. Your choice of a 36-grit was excellent for a starter profile like that.

Video after video, I don't cease to be amazed at the richness of your vocabulary and smoothness of your speech. Not to insult or hurt anyone's feelings, but that's far from what I'd expect from an everyday lumberjack. What kind of background education do you have? Radio presenter courses? An MBA? Or are you just a very well read guy? It baffles me. As a blacksmith who speaks three languages pretty fluently it really warms my heart to know there are more people out there who can both master (or try to do so) some kind of manual as well as intellectual work.

Neat tip: If you have an old rocket hammer that needs a new handle grip and don't need to conserve the vintage looks, take it to a golf club store, and they can put any fancy club grip you want- as the handle is actually based on a golf club for vibration dampening and force concentration. And I am not trying to criticize you, but you should be wearing safety glasses when using the belt sander

It vibrates because it's a hollow handle. If you could get to the end of it you could fill it full of shot shell BB's and cap it.. cheap is what it is, they could have filled it with hot glue and it probably would have been ok.. I would split the plastic and remove it from the handle, fill it with lead shot or hot glue, get a nice hardwood oversized dowel bore it out and slide it over that cheap pipe handle with some construction adhesive on it.. shape to fit your hand and call it a day... Use the lead shot, it will absorb the vibration best. cap it with hot glue

I think the "nail" pull, is a Stake pull for your tent.
@mdbigman
@mdbigman 7 жыл бұрын
+Patrick Renfrew - I would think it is an adaptation of a roofers hatchet. They traditionally had nail pulls for roofing with wood shingles. Never tried to use one to pull out tent stakes. Always just taped them on the side and they pull out by hand.
@PatrickKQ4HBD
@PatrickKQ4HBD 7 жыл бұрын
Patrick Renfrew That could be. I think you'd need to open it up some more with a round file for a nail type tent stake. For a "camp hatchet", folks might hammer a few nails partway into a tree to hang or tie stuff from and then use the same tool to pull them back out (not good practice).

If you want to mildly increase the cost, remove the rubber off the handle and rewrap it with lether or proper rubber and it really improves the vibration damping. As for a next tool, a good low cost bench vise, or even 2 one for wood one for general purpose would be great.
