Thanks for the video. I bought one nice ax and one cheaper one at Home Depot and I never use it because of the slippery handle and to wide of an edge for the ax. This was super helpful because I never thought of doing this to get my cheap ax like my German one. But I got myself a project for Sunday. Thanks for the helpful tips. Love videos like this. And as always keeping you guys in our prayers. One last thing, could you tell us what lake that was you went fishing at. I know I’m late to this. But ran to harbor freight I guess they must have watched this video. My local harbor freight had the raw wood for the handle. No stickers. A more tapered profile and the back is flat. Now it’s $14. But honestly impressed that the company had gone out of their way for the consumer! Thanks for the video love your work!

I enjoyed your comments about the Harbor Freight axe. Here is another great axe which I bought at Tractor Supply. Great hickory handle . The profile of the axe head is excellent. The edge angle is obtuse and dull. But I quickly fixed that. I think the price was around $25. A great bargain. The brand name of the axe is Groundwork.

Good for you!! I'm 25 from Wisconsin. And I enjoy using man powered tools. Or anything vintage or antique for that matter. I don't find any relation to anyone in particular. People don't understand me. I tell people I do what feels right, money doesn't motivate me the motivate or reasons for doing something and it's purpose is my motivation. But I can't find anyone who relates but that don't cause me to change In order to have mutual friends or aquatence. I agree 100% with you on this. I have a cheap all steal coleman hatchet I bough years ago. Last week went out and bought some hand files and reshaped the head on it so I can use it to split small pieces of wood for my smoker. Already thinking about my next purchase of a hatchet/tomahawk style piece for camping. I cherish these videos and stories deeply.

I am impressed not only by the hatchet but by your knowledge. I am 78 years old and grew up on a large beef farm. We heated with wood until the early 60's. I cut more wood and kindling than I care to remember. Most people today go to a hardware store and buy an axe or a hatchet and that is it. You did an excellent job of getting a new hatchet into shape. I realize the time frame involved in your video, but I am sure you will put the final touches on the toe, bit and heel. The cheek could be narrower, but it is a hatchet and just used for splitting or small cutting. Also refinishing the handle is an excellent idea.

Not even kidding. I wish I'd found this channel sooner. I don't remember much about my dad. I do know that my mom was right to leave. I know she did her best, however, there are a ton of things a boy needs to learn that moms just don't understand. I was bullied relentlessly as a kid and adolescent. My mom wondered why. You're bigger than those other boys. They should be scared of you. Well, I've done some thinking. It was because I was bigger than them, and because I wouldn't fight back. If I'd have thrown one good punch and took the punishment (from their friends and suspension from school for a day or two) I would've sent a message. I don't want to hurt you, but I will if you force me to. That last part never happened. It just never occurred to me. Outlast them, then the teachers would stop them and punish them. That's their job, right? Right...? Guess not. Luckily, military life and fatherhood brought it out somewhat. So, while I don't want to engage, I will now if forced. That was a hard lesson to learn on my own though. That and locking washers. That's a brilliant idea. How many of those did I just throw away... lol Wow, I thought I was gonna say something funny about throwing axes or something... kinda went another way. Sorry 'bout that.

So I decided to give this hatchet a try and found one in my local Harbor Freight for $15. Instead of scraping the finish off, I used some Jasco paint stripper and then sanded the handle smooth. Initially I was trying to protect the black finish on the head but realized I simply didn’t like the finish as it seemed like it would potentially bind up on the wood I was splitting so I decided to strip that off as well. Ultimately I decided to pick up a grinder buffing wheel pack at Harbor Freight as well and polish up the head and make it a bit easier to maintain. After getting up to a 600 grit wheel, it was pretty smooth and shiny (not quite mirror but better than before). I reprofiled the cutting edge but added a lot more bevel than suggested in the video and got it closer to 3.5-4x of the original using my file and then worked the back of the head to square it up to strike tent stakes while in the field. Overall I am pretty pleased with how it turned out and just wish it came with an actual sheath. But that’s ok, a buddy just made me one out of leather that looks pretty dang good. I look forward to using it once spring comes around.

My grandpa showed me many years ago that you could take a spent brass cartridge and flatten the end and run it with the grooves of the file and it would clean your files and not dull it at all. Love your show.

Knowing what you know about yourself it's important to recognize that you have it within yourself to become a leader and show others the way like Cody has. If you've never considered it you might think about the military, it gives you skills, family, and money. The military is full of young people who got dumped on by life starting out and have since joined and found each other and now share a brotherhood that lasts until they die. Just a thought. Years ago, I put myself thru college hanging sheet rock. The first think I learned was using stripper to take off the finish on drywall hammers. It only took minutes and is better than scraping I do enjoy these videos.

Just wanted to add a warning about those linseed oil rags: DO NOT crumple them up and throw away, oily rags can spontaneously combust. Many house fires start this way. I believe you can put them in a metal coffee can, fill with water, seal, and throw away. Or lay them out flat and let them “dry”.

@@VoidySan it’s from the fumes becoming concentrated in the air, in a small or enclosed space. It’s not spontaneous in the manner that you’re thinking, but those fumes will start to generate enough heat that even the smallest spark will set them off.

I took up scraping to finish wood, fifty years ago, because sandpaper always leaves sand. A cheap putty knife can very easily be filled square to the sides, and then an edge can be formed on each side, pulling a round, hardened rod, at about 80 degrees to the face, pulling from the center, to each end, on both sides. Scrapers are the best to smooth wood, remove coatings, bring down to very fine finish.

@@j3ff3ry18 Well, you do get scrapings but you leave nothing behind and the sand left behind is embedded in the soft grain. I bought a set of scrapers from Grizzly, decades ago, six or seven scrapers, inside and outside curves, one looks almost like an artist's palette, covers almost any inside curve. I've used three or four, but a few haven't been needed yet. "Turning a burr" on the edge of a scraper begins with filing it clear, if there's an old burr, dull, I've got an old 1/4 in piece of carbide drill, broken off, set it in a tool handle, and it turns a burr very smooth and quickly. You have to be careful it's easy to slash one's finger when the burr begins, but you can shape the edge to match a wood piano seat, for instance, and with care, you leave no lines, and you don't have to try to pick out sand grains, if you're doing a fine finish. I've not looked, but I bet there's examples on youtube. Once you try it, you'll never go back, unless you can't "set a smooth, even burr", I read about it in my youth, used an old plain carbon steel paint scraper, took some tries to get it down pat, but I've not sanded since. I don't do much woodwork, I'm a metal smith, machinist, tool maker, but I have to make boxes for tooling I make, and like to use finger joints, and bring it down dead smooth, and the boiled linseed oil until it takes no more. The Grizzly set is about the best set for the money, using them professionally, I'd buy the best, but any good carbon steel with some hardness will work. They take old varnish and lacquer faster than any other way I've tried. It works like he shows using his knife, but well made, burred, and you can get some area smooth, clean rather fast. Enjoy, I've never gone back.

It’s definitely the superior method but I haven’t been able to file anything sharp enough to scrape wood smooth. I’ll check out the grizzly scrapers. Thanks

@@peterojeda2627 The key is setting the edge. You just file to get it square and straight. From there, the "burnishing too", a hardened steel rod, or something carbide, is used to "roll an edge", the pulling it across at 80 degrees, displaces the steel, forming a curl, and in doing so, increases it's hardness substantially. If you get a set from grizzly, they will be hard enough, but the real key is that burnishing. I'm going to look around and see if I can find a good video that demonstrates the burnishing. I'll keep in touch till you get it down. Once you get used to it, you'll wonder where it was all your life.

@@peterojeda2627 Look up on youtube "sharpening cabinet maker's card scrapers", there's several or more videos, at least on features the grizzly scrapers, but watch them all, when you get a chance, there's various techniques for different individual aspects, in corners, curved surfaces, let me know if you see what you need. It’s already the futures expiration so there is no use in looking at patterns in my opinion - we will have to see how the CME traders react to last month's huge price fluctuations. Most important: will these close their positions (long or short) or will they extend their contract to next month. Also, and youre the market maker guys: 57K is the point of must hurt for both shorts and longs. So BTC will stay there till expiration; then either a pump or a dump but given they need to sell more futures and want to extend the bull run for as long as possible; they should pump over the weekend. Yes thats fake land but ideal for the market maker to push BTC potentially above 60K already this weekend in order to create an higher entry on Monday when CME opens again. For the bearish scenario; exactly the opposite. Just saying: there is a reason for BTC to be where it is right now. I have had good and bad times in the crypto world. The old tip for treating fresh wood with linseed oil: treat once a day for a week, then once a week for a month and then once a month for a year. Your tool handles will then last a lifetime with annual applications.

Bought one of these a few months ago, been meaning to scrape it, knew it needed a scrape and edge work when I bought it, but been too busy to stop and tune it up. I use a machinist scraper so I don't kill the edge on a good knife. I use the belt sander to adjust the edge, then a few file strokes to smooth off the ragged edge as it won't hold up. Tung oil is my goto if I use anything, which I don't. I use whatever I spray the bare metal with on the handle, never been able to justify pricey spray oils, Ballistol is fine for fine shotguns, but I like PB Blaster etc for outdoor tools. I've been using it mostly for knocking off small limbs to feed the chipper. Great tool, HF has hit their stride on most stuff. Good video on axe/hatchet tune up.

I've owned this axe for 16 years. It was my only hatchet growing up as a kid for camping and fires. When I bought my home 3 years ago I obviously upgraded to other hatchets and axes. Unfortunately 2 years ago my buddy broke the handle on this thing but I put a fresh one on and the head still lives on!

I have this exact hand axe. I took off the varnish and hit it with a little linseed oil and, you are right, this is a great tool. Very well made for the price. I sharpened it and it works very well.

I have that same vice. It was my grandfathers, then my dads. It was burnt in a house fire back in 2016 and I recovered it from the garage then restored it for my dad. My dad passed away last month and I just shipped the vice back home to me after the memorial. I love that bullet vice.

My wife's uncle used to say if Rural King does not have it you don't need it....of course this was before they started carrying soap and toothpaste haha. But I love my Rural King gun barn. The only honest gun store around me they will say if something on the rack is junk or not worth it plus they haven't jacked up their ammo prices since the drought started. They have gone up slightly but not anything thing like I see anywhere else only issue is the scarcity of it all but its not their fault on that one.

I’ve noticed most of those charging double price on ammo are the ones not doing so well and I’m.guessing a few will go out of business anyway. There is even a store that is taking $30 bricks of .22lr and asking $90. Double is within reason but triple price makes you a scoundrel.

Over several decades I've modified several hatchets in ways similar to yours, along with double-bit/single axes of various head weights/handle lengths. But since I'm nearing 80 yrs I don't don't need any more nor does arthritis allow me to use them anymore. Hope my 2 sons will find a use for them when I've left for the unknown 'somewhere'.

This is likely the most love any harbor freight tool has ever received
