I love listening to you talk about books. I really do. 🥰 You just always have a great balance of “this is why you may, or may not, enjoy this book” and I am aware I’m incredibly bad at that. 🤣

I read Fireborne on your recommendation and absolutely loved it! For me as much as I loved the conversations about politics and censorship my favorite part had to be the slow burn angsty friends to (maybe) lovers romance. I don't think I've ever cared about a relationship more than I did for Annie and Lee. I've described the book to my friends as not "romance heavy" but "relationship heavy" since it's so focused on the characters. If anyone has any recommendations of similar fantasy romance books that have a very angsty, forbidden, childhood friends to lovers element to them then please let me know, I'm dying to read about a relationship that I am just head over heels for

Every time I hear about Grace of Kings I swing violently between feeling like I should pick it up right away and not thinking it will be for me at all lol. I don't think there's another book that I've heard so much about but am completely unsure on how I feel approaching it.

I finally gave in and have been listening to the audio book. I will say i have greatly enjoyed it so far. I have about 5% left and can't wait to start Storms. It very much reminds me of a eastern style political drama. Not quite as dark as Game of thrones, but just as realistic with a little bit of magic trickled into the world. I was on the fence and have been super pleased with my decision to give it a try. I am a big fan!!

@@johndavis6280 i’ve tried the audiobook a couple of times but find all the names and POVs confusing to follow unless I’m doing literally nothing and just listening to it. Decided I’m better off just reading the actual book, but like OP I haven’t gotten around to it for some odd reason. I’m really intrigued but dang, other books just keep butting in =))

It's a 4 book series that's very much set up with books 1 and 3 being preludes to books 2 and 4. In a way you could think of it as 2 duologies. So I'd say give books 1 and 2 a shot to see if the series is for you, I know that's a lot to ask for lol.

Oh I am so glad you are finally reading Ken Liu ‘s Dandelion Dynasty. It’s such an underrated series that need more love in America Fantasy books pop culture. I get that the pacing in Grace of Kong’s was to fast to get to know the characters because Ken Liu has to establish a lot but I promise you if you continue reading the series you are going to be blown away at the high level fantasy epic ..wall of storms is better paced to where you will fall in love and hate some of the characters and you will love the plot... the over arching theme is so good once you reading the books that follow the Grace of Kong’s ..trust me I will bet money on it that you will love the books that follow.

Please always continue to discuss books that you have already read! So many BookTubers highlight an intention to read something, they don't have the inside track of an author's skill, character arcs, humor or plot development like you do :-). I trust your judgment and the information that you provide so that we can use our reading time to the fullest. Much appreciation!

I have Grace of Kings languishing on my kindle. I love epic fantasy, but it's felt intimidating for some reason. Last book I picked up was What Moves the Dead, by T. Kingfisher, which is a retelling of The Fall of the House of Usher. I probably would have finished it last night, but I decided that maybe reading a horror book right before bed wasn't the greatest idea.

I know this has been the year of YA authors adult debuts that have been pretty hit or miss, but Rosaria Munda is actually someone I'd love to see write an epic adult fantasy. Fireborn is definitely one of the best ya series I've read in a long time.

The only thing about Fireborne I don't like is the love triangle element. I cringed on behalf of Annie so many times. I haven't read the sequel yet so I'm hoping there's less emotional divide on that when I get back to the series. Love the video, btw. :)

Where did you get the pink edition of grace of kings?

I recently read A Rip Through Time by Kelley Armstrong and the newest book from Annette Marie, The Twice-Scorned Lady of Shadow. Both were super fun! The Twice-Scorned Lady of Shadow is part of a large series of really fun urban fantasy books. They are pretty slow burn tho so if you were on a romance kick you may wanna pass unless you are willing to wait a book or two for anything to really happen.

Regarding the "writing technique" that you mention in Grace of Kings, Joe Abercrombie is exploiting it more and more starting from the First Law stand-alones (on the Heroes, I think) and short stories, and now it also appears on the Age of Madness. He's a master at it, with full chapters or stories made up entirely from single-scene characters that are as distinct and entertaining as any of his main characters.

I actually DNF'd Grace of Kings and I'm still really sad about it lol. I REALLY wanted to love it, but Liu's writing felt really stale to me. It felt like i was reading a history textbook at times, or something that was too literally translated from another language. And I felt the same as you about emotional moments. Like you know that something is supposed to be a big deal, but the emotion just isn't there. I stuck with it for most of the book, but after this one big thing happened and I just didn't feel any emotional pull, I had to put it down. I really wanted to love it too. Sometimes I think about picking it back up to finish.
