Wrapping 12.5 meters of wire on a 10 meter pole to make a vertical antenna #hamradio #portablehamradio #hamradioantenna

This is PROOF that an antenna does not need to be "resonant" to radiate well. What most do not understand is this....IF you can get the load to accept power, it must go somewhere (radiation or heat), but it WILL be dissipated. The trick is to find the impedance of the load, and simply match to it. PS. Walt, you deserve a leather jacket to cut the wind. 73 OM

Mornin" Walt... Been watching you for a while... Certainly a breath of fresh air... Thanks for the heads up on the Tram 1499... Although I have used radios nearly all my life (many years in the CAP using modified HF and VHF gear) only amateur licensed for 7 years. Still have my Lafayette HE-20C and D-104 mike when I was 13! Have had my experiences with the "Sad Hams"... never thought these attitudes existed. Had to drive 2:30 hours to take my tech because the 2 nearest clubs couldn't commit. Moved to SW VA 6 years ago, Studying for the gen now running into the same testing problem... may have to drive 6 hours to my sisters whose husband is a tech to take the test with his club there. Anyway... enjoy your antenna experiments. I'm not playing in my sophisticated radios, I will play with antennas... too shaky to do delicate soldering work. I have to move my 10 meter hamstick dipole to the roof of my garage so it will clear the "mountain" that's blocking east of me (and the snow to melt). Hope to make contact with you soon. I'm in Bristol VA. 73's and stay frosty... KM4ZYH David (my real email is dahat001@hotmail; dont know where that other came from)

This was an exciting video! Thanks for trying this out. It's encouraging to see and now I want to do this some time. I'll have to get me a DX Commander one of these days. Hey, got a question for you. I've got the G90 myself and I've pulled together all the stuff I need to make your 7-5 vertical, including the Amazon fishing rod. I'm looking to communicate with my grandpa who lives 470 miles away. Would that antenna get the job done, or would the distance be to close?
@COASTALWAVESWIRES8 ай бұрын
Thanks! I make contacts all the time at that distance, it really depends on the band and time of day. I would say that 40 and 20 meters when open are your best bet. One easy way to find out is to look on the POTA spot for people in that range and see if you can make contact. That might give you a good feel from your location. 73, Walt

No Difference in the Signals Reports I received. No Difference in the RX Signal. @COASTALWAVESWIRES You mentioned getting a Stryker, but I would suggest the Anytone AT-5555N II, which is also sold as the Radioddity QT60. They cover 10 & 12 with a slight mod, that takes less than five minutes, and have impressive DSP noise reduction. The slight downside would be the controls arrangement, as they are configured like a CB.
@basshorseman9988 ай бұрын
Walt, you need to get a piece of thick sock, or grab open cell foam, or both, and if your using an external mike, shove the mike INSIDE of those items, and the wind noise will virtually gone. Tried it out today ... worked great on 10, 12 and 17m. Identical set-up G90 20W, same wire lengths. Did an Antscope scancheck (Rigexpert software) On 17m and 15m the SWR was really good but swr rised strongly outside those 2 bands. Highest SWR 5.4 :1 on 80m. The other bands were lower. 10m ended up around 3.4 : 1 . Now I'm wondering what possibilities I have to get this even better ;) Everything was tuneable dough with my G90.

Your videos sound great indoors or in the car at arms length, but as soon as you go outside or move to a wide shot, the audio leaves a LOT to be desired. (and sometimes hard to understand you) Keep up the great videos.

Hi Walt, My question is, what gauge wire do you use? I've been using a #18 stranded wire, but recently bought a spool of #16 speaker wire, which I can split into two lengths. I thought I noticed you using a single run in your recent video. Any benefit switching? I have the Ziegu-G90 as my radio, and love the way it preforms. So I split it and give it a try. But would like your input on the subject. I think I've made every one of the vertical antennas that you have shown us over the last six months! Keep up the great videos, and I'll keep building. 73 my friend! Paul W1BIU

Hi Paul, I typically use 22 AWG wire and I also use 16 gauge speaker wire which I split and use one side. A 100 foot roll of Walmart 16 gauge Monster speaker wire gives me 200 feet of wire. Thanks and 73 my friend!

Thanks for another video Walt! Would you happen to know how close wound an antenna like this can be before the windings significantly attenuates its signal? 73 mike

I have thoroughly enjoyed your videos Sir. You mentioned a good 10, 11, 12 meter? I purchased an Anytone AT-5555 about 15 years ago and after 10 years I purchased an Anytone AT-5555n. I have had such success with both radios. The AT-5555n has, in my opinion, a richer RX audio and frequency response. And it's got a VFO type of control or channelized. Just my suggestion Sir. Love the videos Walt. 👍 Still don't have my Tkt. Chicken Band for Life🤣 Freebander: 107 The Village Idiot North Texas 73's from Big D P.S. Hi Walt, next step maybe would be to also wind the 17ft (5 metre) counterpoise on the bottom of the pole. Would that make the antenna then an off-centre-fed random length antenna?

The signals were very strong. I wonder if that setup would have worked on 40 or 80 meters?

Yes I'm sure it would. I need to give it a try.

Hey, have you considered a larger 9:1 like on a 240 sized core? Testing has shown them to be more efficient.
@COASTALWAVESWIRES8 ай бұрын
I haven't but will look into that. I've had good results with the LDG one.
