The 1985 1000 Lakes Rally saw the bespectacled Timo Salonen judge the event to perfection for a 48-second win after 50 very rapid special stages over 3 days and 285 miles. The Finnish master blasted his fabulous world-championship-winning Peugeot 205 T16 Group B car through the forests to take the factory’s 11th world rally win in the world-renowned Rally of the 1000 Lakes.

@@bojanstojanovic5465 Peugeot was awesome, but you have to remember that no other group B cars would have been possible without Audis groundwork, which makes Audi quattro the king! But for real, Lancia was, as a company, team and carS the most brilliant and dastardly of them all! Delta S4 with its turbo/supercharger engine and 037 just with its pure awesomeness (and the story about the "200" cars and the coercing of the locals to salt the Monte Carlo roads so that Audi couldn't win) makes them in my book cooler, NOT better, just cooler than everybody!

Not in 1985, he had already had his big accident in Argentina by this point and Kalle Grundell was drafted in to drive in his place on this event.

It wasn't a particularly demanding rally with the brakes. The problem surely comes from some experiment by the Audi team with water cooling of the brakes. Very heavy and difficult to pilot. In addition to having too much downforce with so much skirt and the huge rear wing, which penalized speed. It was surprising how strong Markku Alén was going with the 037, although it was the gravel rally where there were fewer differences with the 4WDs since its route was very fast and there were no major accelerations, braking or uphill sections. Peugeot 205 was somewhat dangerous on jumps where, due to the position of the engine and its rotation in the direction of forward movement, its flights were not very stable, with a tendency to dig into the front. With the tray on the roof of the Evo 2 the problem was partially mitigated with the downforce generated in rear part. However, it was the most agile car, although in this rally it was not very necessary, and it had considerable power 440 HP for 910 kgs. In 2nd half of 86 season reached 540 HP, still being a very manageable and easy car to drive, one of the main reasons to its victory (Drivers and Constructors) that season.

Peugeot showing the way yet again. The feckin Audis must weigh nearly half as much again as the T16. Water cooled brakes is proof of how heavy they were and thus how badly designed. The water adding even more weight. 😂😂

I actually read that it was a make - shift system. Audi had problems with fading brakes so they tried to cool them down.

I believe the 1000 Lake (1985) was the first event they used them on. For the next outing in Sanremo the water cooling was controlled by a separate pedal by the co-driver.
