I was there in '86 watching the deltas and Peugeots in New Zealand and without doubt group b was more exciting, you could hear them coming 10 minutes before they arrived as the noise was tremendous, it was clear the drivers were barely in control. Noise, bangs flames out the back truly spectacular!! The cars were not dangerous because of the power but the lack of safety systems and the positions of the engines. Modern wrc cars are faster except on the long straights where the group b cars higher power would beat them

I was also watching group-b monsters in thousand lakes rally (neste rally) 85' and 86'..and it was just like that, tremendous noise, flames and banging...you could hear when the cars started the special stage, even if you were 10 kilometres from the start.. I miss those times so much

Modern WRC cars pretty much can run at the maximum speed allowed by the surface. Group B engines overpowered the grip so WRC are just as fast as Group B cars. But the laws of physics are for the weak.

+SUN SU On most stages, the modern wrc is probably faster but on more flowing stages like the old stages of thousand lakes the top group b cars is probably a bit faster, if you can keep them on the road will say.They got less grip less advanced suspension etc so they are slower in the bends and corners, they twicth and slides around more and also in tight hairpins since you cant use the handbrake. They got more power, sound better and behave more spectacular and also in my opinion look more badass but in general they are probably not faster.

TheFujac We do know. WRC cars are much faster on the current technical stages, even before the power increase we got this year. The old stages had more speed less technical elements. The suspension, brakes, gearbox of today cars are on completely another level and give the driver driveability that cannot be compared at all with the GrB cars.

The only real rules were that the cars had to have a closed roof, the tire width was limited by engine displacement, engine displacement for forced-induction cars was increased on paper by 40% (The Audi Sport Quattro had a 2,113 cc engine, but since it was turbocharged, it's listed as 2,985 cc.), 200 cars had to be built for homologation purposes with 10 cars to be built for every upgraded version released and each class had a minimum weight requirement. That was it. No intake restrictors, no power or boost restrictions, no restriction on building materials and how much of each could be used, etc. The cars didn't even have to be based on road cars, hence the births of the Lancia 037 and Delta S4, Peugeot 205 T16 and Austin Metro 6R4. WRC is so strict that cars are banned for being too powerful or light or if too much carbon fiber is used. 380hp, electronic differentials and a larger intake restrictor are nice and all, but Group B cars were pure, unadulterated madness in automotive form while WRC cars are like neutered dogs running around in a backyard. The innovations made were also legendary. Lancia introduced the world's first twin-charged engine (Another first for Lancia.), Audi used an early variant of the DSG gearbox and an air recirculation system to reduce turbo lag in the second Evolution model of the Quattro, Peugeot was experimenting with anti-lag tech, introduced the mid-engined all-wheel drive hatchback concept and set the record for the highest average speed on a rally stage with the 205 T16 (I think Blomquist drove a 205 T16.) and much more was to come if Toivennon didn't die and an RS200 plowed into a crowd. It took rally almost 30 years to match the speed of Group B again, but Group A was definitely a fitting replacement. Ironically enough, WRC is based on Group S, a proposed replacement for Group B which was literally rallying for prototypes. After Group B was haulted, Group S introduced a 300hp restriction before it was cancelled, too. Group S, otherwise, wouldn't have been anywhere near as strict as WRC is.

for one thing b was a scene that wrc sadly can't be. spectators crowding the road in numbers of 100k+ and yes it's not all about power but it's what you do with the power and b sure did alot. the cars were absolute uncontrollable monsters the likes of which us common folk could not handle yet the drivers of b could control it. the lack of regulation meant also each car was unique and every team was always pushing the physical limits.
