Well, they are short because they want maximum acceleration on the rally stages, but not that short. They likely shift to not make much noise and maybe to not waste unnecessary fuel.

@@zwjna I heard that they're actually damaging the engines or some other parts going with such slow revs, they aren't happy driving these cars in the streets.

@@pepebenalua It might be, though I don't know for sure. My guess is that it's not damaging. I could think of low RPMs forcing the engine to work hard, but the engines are very strong and the gears are indeed short. Torque is good. I could also think about the low speeds overheating the anti-lag system, but they turn it off when not in Stage Mode or when the road is so slippery that no anti-lag is needed - and you can hear them switching it on before launching a stage, as the car's exhaust suddenly begins to make a lot more noise.

this is wild, I don't think any other motorsport is so amazing in terms of accessibility and relatability to think these crazy race spec cars are following road rules and sharing the same tarmac as regular road cars, then get to the rally stage and rip lap records I really hope this sport stays humble and grassroots like it has been

they'd not be road legal to drive like an every day car, they get special permits for this stuff. They're sillhuette cars made from thin plastic over a spaceframe and rollcage, with no airbags or pedestrian safety measures, lack of the by now in most countries mandatory ABS systems for cars after like 2010, and lack of the like ten different lights from rear fog lights to parking lights which are also mandatory. Definitely not road legal in any way, shape or form, just on special permits.

It's always worth a try... Sometimes you gain much more time. Few days ago I had 2 slow drivers in front of me... I overtook the first one (a van), then we all had to slow down because we drove into a village. The driver of the van was now behind me, clapping his hand above his steering wheel, trying to mock me... Then we reached the end of the village and I floored my car, overtook the second car which was even slower than the van. I was pulling away from them fast, as there were no more cars in front of me, but there were now cars coming in the opposite direction, so the van driver got stuck behind the slow grandpa while I disappeared on the horizon... He probably wasn't laughing anymore at that point. So yeah, sometimes it pays off to get rid of NPCs in front of you.
