I love the simple way you island hope and rummage through the bush. For years I did the same. Now today I turn 77' and celebrate by watching you down a cold one on fantastic beach 1/2 way round the world from we were I be. You truly are a Salty Dog.

Thanks for stirring my memory Barry, I once took my 40fter inside Rewa, hooked the anchor on the hull and a line ashore. Almost immediately 7 small trailer yachts followed, like ducklings following Mother. I also met Johnny in '74 when he gave us a tow out of Gt.Barrier and handed me a package of fresh shnapper fillets to send us on our way to Noumea.

Yeah, I had a 1909 28' Mullety that I rafted up inside the Rewa with 5 other mate's boats in the late 70s. Had a great night and hopefully didn't annoy the neighbours too much. It was said at the time that the owner of the Island purposely sank it there as a breakwater.

@@stuartrobertson6882 Hi Stuart, What was the name of your mullety, between 1946 and 1960 my Dad had 4 mulletys, Venus, Veruna, Marie and Tuatara, I only remember Tuatara (O 1) but there were photos of me climbing out on Marie's bowsprit as a 2-3 yr old ,Mum coaxing me back to the deck.

Do you know the person who used to live on the Island. I can remember in the late 70's and early 80's an elderly Gentleman living there, he was known as the Hermit. Would have been great meeting Johnny Wray.

I was tied up opposite the seaman's mission in down town Auckland in 67 or 68 & Johny was tied up behind me ,I was re rigging my yacht (On a shoe string , Canvas & cotton second hand sails) a 54 ft steel Vandestat cutter 'Hiolani' & the old galvanised turn buckles witch i thought had seen there day were getting replaced & i casually said to Johnny' do want these' , Well youv never seen eyes & smile light up , He soaked them in a bucket of Diesel for a day or two got them freed up & replaced all his block & tackle on his rigging with them , A week later he said the boat had never sailed to windward like it is now . My friend , Deb bought Nagtaki & sailed her around the world later with her son , I believe she's in the Nautical Museum in Auckland now (Not Debbie the yacht) Another great post , Thanks for the memories , Fair winds . Congrates on a 100K Subs , You deserve every one .

There was in the sixties, also the wreck of an old wooden scow beached between the shore and the Rewa. As kids we walked on foredeck that existed then. All signs of this wreck are no longer visible. Great place to visit in the Hauraki Gulf. Thanks for putting it on Utube. We still visit this area on a regular basis. A beautiful place.

I have cruised that area all my life (63yrs) I must find out when DOC removed the house I seem to recall seeing it as a child. But I have swum around the wreck since I was little when my boats were smaller we used to anchor inside the wreck which forms a beautiful little harbour for a few small boats. But my favourite party trick if its winter and not too many swimmers in the water in the right conditions is motor my boat (similar to Shadow) around the wreck you should see the horror on the faces of people who know better in the anchorage :) it is really fun. Glad you enjoy the gulf its my favourite place.

Crackin’ episode Barry - so that we could tack our spinnaker on passage we laid a length of windsurfer mast in the anchor chain trough. Suitably fastened down this cheap removable bowsprit allowed the spinnaker tack to clear the pulpit and made handling of the sail really simple and easy

Thanks for another great episode. Makes me realise how really good our cruising grounds are. I met Johnny Wray in the 1950's when we lived on Waiheke Island. Dad got fish from him as he was just as bad at fishing as I am now. By the way the yacht is pronounced "narrtakie" the G in "Ngataki" is silent.
@roncanizares99662 жыл бұрын
Barry, I can't believe that you didn't fly that cruising shoot before especially on your long trans-Pacific trip. As a single-hander, flying it in the day time only, so you wouldn't need to douse it at night, probably would have shorted you voyages. A tip: when you have it up, mark the line that you need to pull to douse the sock with tape (dark tape if it is a light colored line and white tape if it is a dark colored line). When the wind comes up you will initially get some resistance when dousing, so knowing that you are in fact pulling down and not up is most helpful and an anxiety reducer.

Moturekareka is my favourite Island in the Hauraki Gulf, and there are many such beautiful little gems dotted all around the region. Moturekareka is fascinating as an old Copper Mine (you discovered the old foundations and the wharf piles), the Rewa, the topography; plus the fishing, shellfish and diving around there is great. It looks like you came from Scotts Landing where my yacht is moored. You've done us proud Barry, sincere thanks. Fair winds and following seas.

I have a smaller 9m powerboat and you can go carefully behind the stern of the rewa and anchor behind it. Spent a few nights that way. The tiny little space is only just big enough. The Rewa was sunk there as a breakwater but moved before it settled hence it not being in the right position
