I owe you a huge gratitude of thanks for this video. I had a service stability system and check engine light come on at about the same time, and then my engine started tapping just like the one in your video. I was told that I had to have the engine replaced, and it would cost about $7k by a mechanic. After seeing this video, I made sure that all my coil wires were tight. Both errors went off, and the engine knock stopped. Thank you very much. Save me $7k for engine replacement and about $3k for rental car while truck would be getting fixed.

The tire wear is indicative of cranking up torsion bars or installing a leveling kit. Any time the suspension is touched it needs an alignment.
@JoeWayne84
@JoeWayne84 Ай бұрын
Those 1/2 ton Chevy trucks anytime you go over 33” tires that independent front will lose alignment regularly and cut the front tires … yes I’ve seen many people install torsion keys to lift the front and get them re-aligned and then after 6 months they are still cutting tires again it’s just they aren’t built heavy duty enough to have that heavy and large of tires and rims if you leave them with the stock size tires they come with they will last almost forever and wear the tires great.

I’ve been problem free engine wise (knock on sheet metal) on a 2011 Silverado with an AFM 5.3 and I’ve been running corn squeezins (E85) for the majority of the last 2.5-3 years (huge cost difference in CA). I’m about 3 oil changes from 500K on it (miles). In my experience I believe that a large percentage of AFM issues are related to oil quality, change interval and treating changing the oil like surgery. I always change it hot, and I wipe down everything remotely close to an opening and make sure things like funnels etc are clean and use new or laundered rags. FWIW too, this guy is great, with his honest attitude and savvy he’s going to have to disappear to retire 🤣

Yes they are way more durable than any Dodge or Ford engine today. they are not 800HP flashes in the pan, they are meant to last you ten years or more, just like the 1st gen small-blocks. I'm not nuts about too much aluminum but these seem great. I have a 2011 I got last year and it's beautiful, a Vortec head engine. they all seem to have a low knock when started, not from lifters, it's lower frequency in tone. could be related to the variable valve timing (?) but it seems to go away and not cause any issues. the tradeoff is a superb engine that will perform and last a very long time. I got my 1st mechanic job in 1984...

Judging from the way that sheet metal was pushed back, I would say that the front bumper was replaced at some point in time. And, it looks like, a front end collision may have thrown the tires out of alignment. I would send him to a frame shop, to at least have it set up and measured. If either frame rail has been mashed or swayed or has an out of level condition. It will affect the sai, steering access inclination. (Steering wheel returns to center.) Which is all three, tow, camber, castor, set properly. Any one of those three, can cause excessive tire wear. I've also seen in the past, where the alignment shops have cranked up the torsion bars. To create the illusion that the frame is straight. And don't think just because you have a big Chevy truck, that you have a heavy duty frame on there. That is not the case at all. The frame on those trucks is just enough to get it down the road. There's nothing special about them. They're pretty much at one size fits-all program.

@mr.mckinnon5680
@mr.mckinnon5680 2 жыл бұрын
@@truckingoover ... You won't have to replace the frame. They're pretty workable. As long as they're not rotted out in the seams. A good frame and alignment shop with a good measuring system be able to straighten that puppy back out no problem. And if you do a return of cost benefit analysis on it, you're not just saving tires. You're also saving ball joints tie rod ends shocks and brakes. Brakes are the most important. Because you want the brakes functioning on all four corners the way they're supposed to. The biggest part of that is making sure that the wheel is where it is supposed to be. As a former Mr Goodwrench, service technician. I would hate for you to reach down for that brake pedal someday, and it not be there.

I bought a brandnew 2018 Chevy 1500 LT. 4 yrs ago. First set of tire wears are almost the same, front driver side tire is more bald than the other side. Tire people telling me, do you always turn left??? Hahaha, but yah he made me believe it. Truck is my daily ride, route always more with left turns. Lol. More frequent alignment and tire rotations prevented the obvious wear on one tire.

Tightened it and it made the noise you had in the start of the video. I had unknowingly pulled the wire out of the coil slightly when pulling the hard to get off spark plug end. I knew I had no tap before and with my face right there I could hear it pretty clear. Snapped the coil end securely, end of tick.

it could be the tires themselves are defective,, alot of tires are being made in the phillipines and they are junk. I have a set of yokohamas on my van,, ok one of the got a nail in it and couldnt be fixed, so discount tire replaced it with a yokohama made in the new plant in the phillipines,. the original set was made in the USA... , it started feathering badly, it was on the back, and when they rotated my tires they put it on the front and the van started pulling to the right,, so I told them I wanted a tire made in the usa.. they replaced the tire with a new goodyear, and its doing great so far. DIscount tire likes to replace tires under road hazzard with cheap knock off tires made in third world countries.. they did the same thing when one of my hankook dynapros went bad, the tire they replaced it with looked exactly the same, but it was a shitty house brand.,, now I know how they operate and will insist on the exact replacement tire, or get a refund.. if u need a replacement tire under warranty, call first and ask if they have them in stock,, THEN tell them u need a tire replaced under warranty.. if u tell them u need a tire replaced right off the bat, they will likely say they dont have any in stock, but they have a "compatible" replacement tire for you,, and will try to give u a shit tire.

Randomly he noticed it wasn't quite as bad when he parked turned around, nose down. within a day the noise was gone, that's at least 40,000 miles ago the way he uses it. So just one more random tick thing to be aware of.

Yup, wires coming off is not a super common issue but it does happen enough for a TSB! There's also a TSB for the radiator shutter wire getting pinched, and needs to be rerouted, or replaced if rubbed through.

People are nuts. as soon as I buy a used vehicle I throw money at it. right away I first changed my plugs, wires and all the grounds which are an issue on these. then I popped in a thermostat and a new master switch for the power windows. and on it goes.. ordered tires from Walmart 😉

This is obviously a common problem. I had that exact same problem with my 2014 Sierra sle 1500. Also on a 5.3 liter engine and also the same cylinder. I knew exactly what the problem was as soon as I heard it, as this happened 3 or 4 times. I am pretty sure that the issue is that the wire is just a little too short and loosens from tension.

I recently found out that what happens is the boot is such a tight fit , that the air gets trapped inside and with heat , if the air doesn't come out on its own , the expansion from heat forces the boot off.

@@WrenchingWithKenny maybe that is what happened to my 2014. I changed the plug wires a month ago, and a couple weeks ago one popped right off on me(cylinder 5), and found a second one that was also coming off. i was using aftermarket plug wires and thought maybe it was the wires themselves, but if this is happening even with OEM plugs.......

Just to let you know I have a 6.2 L Chevy Silverado and I had a lifter failure the lifters collapsed so yes they are out there they do happen I fought with the company they tried to just replace the two different lifters that failed but eventually I had them replace all 16 so that's something you need to look at when they do fight you on this you need to have all 16 replaced not just one or two good luck

If they replaced those 16 with the same type, guess what? They put a bandaid on a bullet wound! Turn off your AFM\DFM, all depending on which one you have. That's the only way to be sure that your lifters won't stick in the collapsed position (what they do during cylinder deactivation) and then not pop back up.

We went through that they identified the lot part number that was bad so they did not replace them with that particular Lot number they replaced them with a known Lot number or part number that were considered good they have identified the malfunctioning lifters yes I had to go around and around with them on that to make sure they didn't stick bad lifters back in there the same Lot number and part number as the ones that were in there that were defective

@@waynec211 And you believe that? GM has been having the lifter issue for years. Unless they changed parts supplier, I wouldn't take it on any long trips. Like I'd said though, if you disable your fuel management system, which can be done right from your dash, then you'll run the risk of it happening once again. You may notice up to 1 mpg difference in your fuel economy, which to avoid it happening again, sure seems worth it. Ask yourself this, if GM knew it was just a certain lot number of them that were causing the issue, why have they still been installing them in their 5.3L and 6.2L V-8s for the last ten years? Only thing I don't get, is why they haven't changed suppliers by now.

I had a rattling noise, no codes that sounded just like it was under my driver's seat & would happen on a smooth road, rough road, while in gear but when I put it in neutral it would go away! It would never happen when a Tech Test Drove it! Found out it was a loose passenger side hood bolt on my 02' Blazer ZR2 4x4. Funny how these noises can travel.

Good call on that engine noise. As soon as you lifted the hood I could hear it sounded more like a "snapping" noise like a bad plug wire I guessed. But you showed the loose wire! WOW, do owners actually put 0w-20 oil in these engines like it showed on the oil fill cap!? I never go below 5w-30 in mine. Auto manufacturers are sacrificing our engines life in the search for higher CAFE Fuel milage numbers to me Regulation and impress the buyers.

Most people really don't know anything and let shops or quick lube place change their oil . Most shops or QL places will use what the manufacturer recommends unless the customer requested different. If the receipt shows one weight , and the vehicle calls for another , then that's a potential claim if something were to happen to the motor . Especially in NY where I spent most my life . The DMV doesn't play in that state . If a customer files a complaint with the DMV and says , let's say , that their DOD lifter failed (common failure) because the shop used the wrong weight oil, the DMV will investigate and they could hold the shop liable for tge repair!!

Big trucks and SUV that take 0w-20, I live in a warmer climate all rear round and use 5w-30 instead and seems too work a lot better. For example 2022 BMW x3 takes 0w-20 but it’s never reached below 50 and 5w-30 seems to make the engine smoother and quieter

Had this happen on my #7 on my 5.3L as well. Misfire only happened at high speeds and was random but not enough to trigger a code. We thought it was the transmission slipping when accelerating. Honest transmission shop owner drove it and in 1 min said “this is not a transmission, but i have a hunch”. Took a look under the hood and found it, Plugged it back in and hasnt been a problem since. Guy refused to let me pay him.

I had 17' silverado with the 5.3 z71 and around 100,000 miles i had a dead miss on #3. I ended up changing the plugs and in the process found the #3 plug wire was broken internally. Fast forward a month or so had the exact same issue twice but with the aftermarket wires from the parts store. Just outa Curiosity can you put a dab of Dialectic grease both ends of the plug wire to help?
@WrenchingWithKenny
@WrenchingWithKenny 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. The dialectric grease can be used on both ends without issue. In all honesty though, I tend not to use it on ends that are close to the exhaust as I've found they seem to really get stuck onto the plug and subsequently tear when removing . This usually seems to be the issue for me after many miles however

I think i may have a bad ecm on my 99 silverado with 5.3L it does all kinds of crazy stuff like the hard shifts and occasionally get a check engine light then a couple times it failed to start and has had poor acceleration for sometime now but runs better with midgrade gas and crappy with reg unlead, did have a 0700 tranny code on scan tool last time i checked but reason i think it might be ecm is because it's having multiple issues that are random, may come to a stop it it's like it did not downshift then does after stopped is another.
