KungFu practitioners were conditioned for decades since the 1940s to disassociate KungFu from grappling / wrestling, even to this day. I think it’s because after the Dynastic Era, the men with superior wrestling skill lost their military posts and were forced to become street performers. But, if you look at all the big cities that were major hubs for KungFu - especially Henan where Shaolin is - the sport of choice was Chinese Wrestling. It’s the base roots of ALL KungFu, along with bladed weaponry. Tai Chi tournaments are literally grip fighting competitions but they will shout you down if you state the obvious lol. “In the context of Henan province, "Shuai Jiao" refers to a long-standing tradition of Chinese wrestling, deeply rooted in the region's history, where it was practiced extensively as a martial art and military combat technique, often associated with the "Shan Pu Ying" (Battalion of Excellency in Catching) unit within the Imperial Household Department based in Beijing, which codified the style; essentially making Henan a key area for the development and practice of Shuai Jiao throughout Chinese history.”

I wrestled in HS and I find it is a good back up system for my other martial arts training(Goju,Wing Chun,etc.). Wrestling has helped me tremendously in self-defense.

My buddy is a Mongolian national FS champ and was 4th in the Worlds as a junior.He showed our club a combat bong sau (?) strike under the opponents tricep from the tie as opposed to the Chael head roll.I instantly saw WC similarity.The Mongol did not know any thing other than FS and Sambo.

Love your journey brother. I've always seen Wing Chun and some other forms of Kung Fu like Tai Chi as grappling arts combined with striking. BJJ helped my Wing Chun and vice versa. When it comes to self defense a Wing Chun practitioner that has properly pressure tested techniques is far more prepared then most other martial arts.
@Frankie1622
@Frankie1622 Ай бұрын
Would it be accurate to say that most of the "techniques" of Wing Chun are not actually "techniques", but "technical terms"? Like, you don't need to block with a Bong Sao, but most people call it a block. I guess it "became a block" because that's how it ended up being applied by most practitioners, but in actuality the application depends on person and situation? The analogy I am working with is, since the body is a "system", within the Wing Chun "body", rather than simply calling each hand/strike; "hand", like each bone in the body has a name, each "hand/strike" has a name
@willtherealrustyschacklefo3812
@willtherealrustyschacklefo3812 Ай бұрын
Yeah basically. It isn't a "block", and would generally be performed after you have already made contact to redirect their strike. But yes it can be used as one, mostly against body kicks. Tan Sao and pak sao are much better concepts for actually blocking with tho.

Totally agree with the lack of intention, tenacity, etc. and the agreement of tying up. I went back to my old HS years ago to help out with wrestling. They have a hard time with that “popping” energy and pain compliance.

Spot on. "Meet what enters. Stick to it and escort it away. CLOSE THE GAP." (Who says "Closing the Gap" or "Filling the Void" is about punching only?) ALL Strikes (hands, elbows, feet, shoulders, shoots, et al) are a transfer of weight. Nothing else. No weight transfer, no strike - the body part or parts are irrelevant. Great stuff. Keep it coming.

I bet you'd love training Kyusho Jitsu (small circle jujitsu). I had exactly the same feeling when I started to learn it after doing WingChun for a few years "Oh man this is made to work seamlessly with wing chun!". Sadly it's riddled with fake mystical BS with the whole no touch knockout stuff, but the actual pressure point stuff, the locks etc, and the physical pressure point KOs are all seriously legit, and a perfect marriage to wing chun. It's highly effective at putting people on their ass in a world of pain lol. I used to use wing chun to close the distance and often found myself utilising Kyusho Jitsu once I'd tied up or got through the guard to "end" the contact. 😉👍

I totally agree now that Wing Chun shouldn't be the first martial art you learn. The more I watch videos of Wing Chun in application within other martial arts, and seeing Wing Chun concepts within the martial art I currently practice (obviously not Wing Chun, but I do want to pick up Wing Chun later on), the more I am finding this true. The question I have is, should I learn only 1 martial art first then move to Wing Chun and then stop there, or learn as many martial arts as possible with Wing Chun included as long as Wing Chun isn't learned first?

Point in case , Sifu Izzo: Wing Chun is useful for self defense even at an older age. I've used it. It works, but since it's not seen frequently in rings or octagons , people disbelieve it. But, it should not be bound by rules. Like krav maga: it's not a sport... it's a defense/attack method. Much respect.🤜🏻🫷🏻
