JAKE THE SNAKE | The Jake Roberts Story (Full Career Documentary)
There have been a lot of great personalities in wrestling. However, perhaps no one in the history of the industry has ever been able to perform with such an excellent grasp of psychology more than Jake “The Snake” Roberts. Yes, whether it be his masterful ability to hold crowds in the palm of his hand with his in ring work or his often chilling promos that proved you didn’t have to shout to be heard, few if any have ever built a more compelling character than him. But of course, with this delving into his own psyche came a whole host of personal demons being unleashed too. But how did it all happen? Well, join us today as we take a deep dive into his entire career journey in Jake the Snake: The Jake Roberts Story.

Jake was the coolest wrestler when I was a kid in the 80s and 90s he was bad ass the way he had the snake in the bag and you kept looking at his matches waiting for him to let it out. One of the best ever.

I saw Jake at an Indy show back in 2013 this was when DDP was helping him get his life back together. After the show he got on the mic and stated talking about how he was getting his life back together and I still remember him saying “Kids don’t do drugs” it’s probably one of the best things I experienced at a wrestling show and something that I’ll never forget

Jake had his demons. But I saw him at a show in '98 & I'll never forget it. He was in the ring at intermission, taking pics with fans. This little girl (probably 9 or 10) was in the front row asking for an autograph. Jake stopped what he was doing. Had a ln attendant grab the book, signed it & gave it back. Didn't try to get money from the parents like many others back then would've. That girl's smile didn't leave her face the rest of the night. Jake had his issues. But he's a class act in my book.

Thanks for this great documentary on Jake “The Snake” Roberts. I’ve been in attendance at some of his matches and have met him personally a few times. Regardless of how his personal demons had affected him, Jake gave me the impression that he was genuinely a good guy. I have to agree that he was a master psychologist when it came to cutting promos and he didn’t have to yell to be heard nor to get his message across. Jake is tall at around 6’5” or 6’6” but was not overly bulked up like Hogan or Warrior. And yes, I remember the crowd chanting for the DDT...those were the days!

You guys remember that (botched) clip of Jake saying "You wanna play 21? I got 22!" It's actually NOT a botch, but a very clever promo. I'll explain it. "You wanna play 21? I got 22" (As in a .22 caliber handgun) "You wanna play blackjack? I got 2 of those too" (Blackjacks are a type of weapon used for beating people with) "You wanna play aces and eights? I got too many of those too" (Aces and eights refers to the Dead Man's Hand, the cards Wild Bill Hickok was holding when he was shot dead) Although delivered in a sloppy, slurred, drunken manner, it's actually a pretty decent promo! The more you know!

The narrator of this video made a mistake. Jake Roberts wasn't born May 20 1950. He was born May 30 1955. My mother once interacted with him in my hometown of Missoula Montana back in possibly 1999 or 2000 when she worked as a sales manager of a local radio station called "Z-100". Jake was booked there one day for a radio interview, and when he first arrived at the radio station, my mother noticed him wandering around, unsure which room he was supposed to go to. My mother got up and directed him to the room he was scheduled for his interview in. She told me that she knew he was drinking at a bar because he reeked like cigarette smoke and as always, his hair was long and greasy and his eyes were bloodshot. She said he looked like forty miles of rough road. She happened to ask him "Where's your snake?" Jake replied "You're getting kind of personal there, aren't you little lady?" and he winked at her. Everybody at the station who heard that laughed, including my mother. I share that story with people from time to time and they love it! ~Dutch
