YEAR IN REVIEW | The WWE in 2005 (Full Year Documentary)
In 2005, the world had fully settled into the new millennium; and so any trends of the 90’s seemed to be fully gone; as the next generation of things took over. But while in the larger entertainment world this meant events such as the birth of KZbin and the release of the X-Box 360; in the world of wrestling, it meant the rise of two new figures, one of whom would go on to carry the company for the next two decades. But how did it all happen? Well, join us today as we take a deep dive into the entire story from start to finish in The WWE in 2005: A Year in Review.

Going back to watch RAWs from 2005 and 2006, it’s shocking how fast fans turned against Cena. It didn’t help that Cena basically held the WWE title for 2 years, from April 2005 - January 2006, January 2006 - June 2006, and September 2006 - September 2007. WWE really crammed him down our throats.

Cena and Batista’s rise, Shawn vs Kurt, The OG SmackDown vs Raw Survivor Series fued, Orton and Taker, Rey vs Eddie, Edge and Matt Hardy. The production, the formatting, every show felt like a can’t miss, and every show today is still a must watch.

2005 was the HEIGHT of the Ruthless Aggression Era in my opinion. Just like 2000 was the height of the Attitude Era. John Cena became the new face of the company, Batista ended Triple H’s 3-year Reign Of Terror, Undertaker and Randy Orton had their amazing Legend vs Legend Killer feud, Edge became the first Mr Money in the Bank, ECW was brought back, Eddie and Rey had their infamous feud over Dominik, and of course the Matt Hardy/Edge/Lita love triangle which was a real issue turned into a storyline. The only bad thing from that year was Eddie Guerrero’s unfortunate death.

@You're under 19 don't argue I’m 21. And you’re wrong dude. Say what you want about him, Cena was the face of the company for a decade and half whether you like it or not. Batista definitely could’ve been, but at the end of the day, Vince chose John. And plus, when WWE eventually turned PG, John adapted to it and was able to continue being the top guy and become the top merch seller since Stone Cold. Batista made it clear over the years that he hates how PG WWE became so even if Vince did chose him to be his next top guy he wouldn’t have stayed long. He would’ve left WWE high and dry just like Brock did.

@You're under 19 don't argue I’m not saying it’s as good as the 2000s because wrestling won’t be that good again because of today’s sensitive @ss society. 2005 was a good year. Only major issue was the push of the not-yet-ready John Cena. While he would end up becoming a legitimate wrestler and worth of the main event tier by the end of the decade, the damage was done with the hasty push. It's why fans quickly turned on Roman; most of us had already seen a similar rushed push in Cena. It also proved that Vince could never get over the fact he lost Hogan, even when he had Hogan back. The two things that stand out for me for this year, besides the infamous botched Rumble ending (if Vince wasn't a stubborn man even then, he should've rolled with it) were the Streak and Eddie. The Streak, IMO, should've ended that night. The nuclear levels of heat Orton would've gotten on RAW the next night (Yes, Orton jumps to RAW for one night to gloat), solidifying his status as the Legend Killer. We know why he didn't, out of respect for Taker, and we wouldn't have obtained the tetralogy (it is a word, Google it) between him and DX. God the boos he would've been getting. Doubt he'd getting. As for Eddie, I've only three words for how much I miss him: *¡Viva la raza!*
@davidakinwole4636
@davidakinwole4636 Жыл бұрын
Nah he wasn't hastily pushed, it was him changing from dr of thuganmics to the superhero like character that made adult males who were used to the attitudes era can do anything style not like his character as much. Overall it didn't matter tho bc the kids loved him and there were more kids watching the product at the time that adult males that's why cena remains so popular. Those kids have grown up and are still fans
@obsessivefanboy7
@obsessivefanboy7 Жыл бұрын
I don't think it's that he wasn't ready, he was just moved to the flagship show too early and was steamrolling through so much of the top talent (including some talent from the Attitude era) that fans (mostly the older ones) started to getting tired of his Superman booking and turned on him. I think it would have been more beneficial if Cena and Batista stayed on their respective shows for at least another year before trading shows. Smackdown was always Cena's home, and I think the fan backlash would not have been as bad (or not happened) if he stayed on Smackdown for all of 2005.
@kevinlee9929
@kevinlee9929 Жыл бұрын
@@obsessivefanboy7 He was ready to move to RAW. The problem was him always winning. Plus he kept the title too long. I said back then that if he didn't lose the belt by Unforgiven that the crowd would turn on him. Happened with Hogan in 91 and Shawn in 96.
@KagedStorm
@KagedStorm Жыл бұрын
You could say the same thing you said about Cena for Orton beating Taker. He wasn't ready yet, and seeing someone who hasn't had 4 years on the main roster to their name beat Taker probably wouldn't have been good in the end, especially if we take into account Orton's behavioral issues he was dealing with at the time
@obsessivefanboy7
@obsessivefanboy7 Жыл бұрын
@@kevinlee9929 yeah he should've lost the title to Kurt. He didn't even have to lose clean as long as he lost. Looking back now I wish Eric did award Kurt the WWE title and brought back the undisputed title design. That belt I feel was the last good looking world title belt they made.

As a longtime wrestling fan since the late 80s, '05 was when I started watching less and less. '95 was a bad year, but the Monday Night Wars was able to keep my interest. Since '02, I felt that the writing had been continually declining, and so did the ratings. By the midpoint of the decade, I began only watching the storylines/matches that intrigued me like Trish Stratus vs Mickie James and Undertaker's WrestleMania streak.

Little correction: triple h didnt retain the title at that year's chamber. The title was vacant and he won it for the tenth time. Also, eddie and rey were still tag team champions when they faced each other at wrestlemania 😅. Love these vids, great job 💪

2005 was definitely one of my favourite years in wrestling. The draft, Batista and Cena being the face of Smackdown and RAW, and much more. It gives me a lot of nostalgia.

@@edgeisthegoat In those years it was crystal clear that RAW had the better roster. 2005 was 1 of the rare times that the roster felt balanced. Batista, Orton, Taker, JBL, Booker T, Benoit, Eddie, Rey, Muhammad Hassan, Christian. SD! didn't get the "Shaft" lol

@@edgeisthegoat 2009 RAW had Cena, Batista, Orton, HBK, HHH, Big Show, Kennedy, MVP 2008 Cena, Orton, Batista, HBK, Punk, Kane, JBL, Jericho This all being at a time when it was evident that Cena and Orton were the 2 guys who would be "The Man". No different how WWE has Roman on SD! Cause that's the A Show.
