This time we look at Bret Hart winning the WWF Championship from Ric Flair in 1992. The Hart vs Flair match took place at an untelevised show in Saskatoon but the match was taped for home video, it's also a match that's not as deeply discussed as other WWF / WWE Championship matches for a few reasons.
Ric Flair revealed years later that he was having balance issues during this time period and he blames this on (what he believes to be) his poor match quality during these later days of his first WWF run. Bret Hart, meanwhile, wrote in his book that he thought Ric Flair was sabotaging him by putting on deliberate bad matches.

Bret was just the coolest wrestler to me as a kid. The pink/black color scheme, the shades, and his in-ring skill and smarts made him a great underdog babyface who you knew had a shot at beating any opponent. So fun to watch. I wish his career hadn't been cut just short enough that we never got feuds between Hitman and Kurt Angle or Brock Lesnar.

Flair telling Vince to get to Calgary instead of Saskatoon may not be misremembered. The night before the Saskatoon show, Bret wrestled flair in Red Deer, Alberta to a DQ. This was three days after the initial injury in the match against Warrior. Flair mentioned that he realized the severity of the injury after taking a backdrop from Bret at the Red Deer show. If flair became aware of the injury in Red Deer, it would make sense to summon Vince to the nearest international airport, in Calgary.

Sure he takes himself too seriously but Brett genuinely loved being the champion. It's refreshing that he cared that much about it, that he deemed it a great honour to be the champion, that it meant everything to carry that belt, and that it was a great responsibility to carry the WWF title. The belt means more when the performer believes in it like Brett did.

The World Championship wasn't just a prop to Bret, like the way so many other wrestlers have treated it in the time since Bret's retirement, just because it was handed to him by a promoter. He always had a way about him; he acted like he earned that championship belt, and I would have to agree with him. He worked his ass off to put himself in position to be the top guy in the WWF in the eyes of the fans during the "New Generation Era."

Let's be honest. Both Flair and Bret were FANTASTIC ring generals in their prime. But they also go about things very differently. It would make sense that the two wouldn't mesh well because they are so used to doing things their way. Doesn't mean either way is wrong, it's just different.

Flair also said that Bret’s run wasn’t any good, and that fans had enjoyed watching Bret chase the title, but didn’t enjoy him as champion. Which is BS, because there hadn’t been any kind of chase. I think Bret if anything was far ahead of the curve in terms of style of wrestler in the Wwe, where the wrestler wasn’t physically overpowering or crippled with a dopey gimmick. He got over largely just by “being a talented wrestler”. With the exception of Flair (who was on the way out the door), there really wasn’t anyone else in the company running the same “over just by being good at their job” category (outside of Sean Michael’s) It’s probably why Vince was so hesitant to stick with this plan initially.

I remember my friends coming to school after Bret won. We were all major Bret Hart fans. We were buzzing. One guy was a major Flair fan, too and he was super excited. Don’t discount the fact that since the Survivor Series Card had to change, a quick title change would also give Vince a title match that wasn’t originally in the cards. Long term plans I think were for Warrior to get the Belt from Flair by WM, but with Warrior gone, Flair not 100% and also looking back toward Atlanta, and Vince knowing he was going to be changing up his Advertised Survivor Series card, there was no time to waste. Get the belt on Bret, get the IC title on Shawn, and you have a pretty good tv and house show feud from the summer of 1992 to cap off the ppv as the two top guys

Was 9...and God I remember that crowd....such a great moment for Bret and his Family I don't think of the match as a fan I think of it as a moment that solidified my favorite...

People talk about Brets promos but his intercontinental title reign bret gave some great promos like the summerslam 92 promo for the bulldog like bret had a chip on his shoulder then after he won the world title they had bret smiling and the promos were watered down.....Keep the edge even after they win the gold.....Bret hart to me is the best there is was and ever will be and even if anyone dont think that bret is definitely 1 of the best and that can never be taking away from him

I was there! I went with my two uncles and my cousin. I was 12. We were in the front row, and you can see us at 15:07. The big guy in the grey top on the far right is my uncle, and my cousin and I are to the left. We all heard Bret mutter, “I broke my fuckin’ finger.” 🤣 The girl holding the belt with the Bret glasses on at 20:12 is my cousin. She doesn’t look happy because my uncle accidentally elbowed her in the head in his excitement when Bret won. 🤣 We couldn’t believe he’d actually won the belt.

BRET HART IS STILL MY FAVORITE OVERALL PERFORMER. HE WAS A NO NONSENSE TECHNICAL ARTIST AND MADE ME BELIEVE THERE WAS NO ONE HE COULDN’T MATCH UP WITH ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Bret Hart was my favorite wrestler growing up. Shawn Michaels was my older brother’s favorite. I remember listening to the 97 Survivor Series. Idk if this is true for everybody but we could turn the channel to 99 and listen to the action through quite a bit of static but still mostly audible and the picture was just snow. I was heartbroken and my brother was gleeful. I swore off WWF for a while till I realized they weren’t going to do anything with him in WCW. Then SCSA blew up and he became both of our favorite wrestler. Great time for wrestling but always thought it was a shame that Hitman had such a sour end to his career.

I dont know if there is enough story to tell, but if possible, I'd love an in depth look at Bret and Shawns 1992 survivor series match. Truly underrated and a sign of where the company was going before it knew it. In a way in kind of reminds me of Sid's 1996-1997 title run. Not because they are anything a like but just because the company at the time was showcasing what it would become in the future without intentionally doing so.

I really love seeing this stuff that reminds me of my childhood! I used to try to put my friends in the Sharp shooter and sometimes let my brother put it on me. Those were the days....
