I remember how initially when the Shield debuted everyone thought Dean Ambrose was going to be the breakout star. Even WWE presented him that way - He was the only one who got a singles championship reign, took part in that year’s MITB and even went one-on-one with the Undertaker. Then something changed (probably Vince’s mind) and Roman started to get pushed as THE guy. Ironically though, the guy who ultimately broke out as champion the first was Seth.

Roman was ALWAYS pegged to be the star of the group, I suspect that's why Vince shot down Chris Hero's involvement in the first place. Dean was simply the leader of the group because he was the best for it at the time of the Shield's debut considering Roman was BY FAR the greeenest of the group and he wouldn't have worked in that role early on. Once Roman started to come into his own in Early 2014 he became The Shield's de facto leader.
@ClaraFinn Жыл бұрын
@@ritangshubhattacharya1654 Not necessarily. While it’s not what they ended up doing, a surefire way of building a great new babyface star is have them rebel against the domineering heel leader of their stable. Ambrose being a heel leader of the shield who treats Reigns like shit and soon causing the fans to organically start cheering for Reigns could’ve been a great way to start his face run with him eventually turning on Ambrose. I think a lot of people expected Ambrose to be the heel and Rollins/Reigns faces post breakup.
@christopheraikens597 Жыл бұрын
Ambrose was not set up to be the breakout star of the Shield. They gave him the US title because it is a mid-card title and that's how they saw him, as a mid-card talent who could also be put in main event spots when needed. They never wanted him to be the main event star though. It was always Roman Reigns, and then Seth won them over eventually to get the push first while they worked the fans up for Roman. They always saw Dean as the lesser of the three. It was obvious who the fans thought was the star, but Vince doesn't care what the fans think. He wants to shove whoever he personally wants to be the face of the company down everyone's throats lol.

He had some excellent moments but man he was held back far too much for someone of his charisma and ability. Here's the thing, it's not like he had to do a bunch of extreme matches or anything. If Vince had just let him execute the original concept Jon had for the character of Dean Ambrose after The Shield broke up, which was a facsimile of John McClane, it would've been amazing. To this day, I maintain that Dean should have been the one to turn first on SHIELD, to join the Wyatts. He had exactly the mindset and exactly the vulnerabilities Bray needed and wanted in a partner, and for the first months of their feud it seemed like Bray was mostly only interested in Dean and in promos & matches targeted him specifically. Bray & Dean had the most chemistry, too.

Hot take: I prefer Dean Ambrose. Jon Moxley is way into cutting his head open every week and having matches where he spends four minutes fighting outside the ring while the ref just stands there not counting.
@dngn4774 Жыл бұрын
He started having much better promos as Moxley but it also dialed up all of the wannabe stone cold mannerisms up another 100%. I'm not really into his work when he's too silly or hardcore.

That is a scaldingly hot take, and one I can’t take seriously. Much less hot, though, is your justification. Somebody should set up a swear jar, where you need to pay money every time you make a joke about Mox bleeding a lot.

Dean ambrose is the most blatant example of WWE holding back a wrestler by making him into something the company wanted him to be versus what he was capable of. Instead of making him the tough edgy jon moxley character they wanted to use him as comedy relief. It's really sad but at the end of the day it all worked out for him

In 2024, it’s wild seeing how the Shield trio has progressed: - Mox: A stable stalwart of AEW for the foreseeable future - Roman: Recently wrapped a generational title run and is poised to return as a mega babyface at Summerslam - Seth: Still over as a top face in WWE and had a big role in WrestleMania 40, even in defeat

Dean Ambrose really reminds me of Chris Benoit and their treatment by the WWE. They were midcard acts, who had their big break by winning the big title to an ovation. Both did nothing with their titles, and were relegated back to the midcard. Both were treated really well by the company in terms of pay and achievement, but we're immediately buried and ghosted by the WWE once they stoped wrestling for them. The only difference is that Beniot's burial was deserved (you know why) and Ambrose's was done out of sheer pettiness.
@LexysHereAfter Жыл бұрын
The initial run of the Shield was so damn good. You can easily forget just how effective and believable they were as a unit. Especially in the six-man matches. But man, this brought back memories after the split and you can see faint glimmers of Mox in his run as Ambrose but it was just completely him being held back. All it took was to let him loose and look at his AEW run now. He's the damned heart of the place and it shows so much. I hope he gets that time off he was going to take before the All Out madness soon, dude has more than earned it.

Counterpoint: We can't criticize WWE for having the Shield's 1st loss as a team come on a 'random episode of TV' when two other things we criticize the product (rightly for) are a lack of week-by-week plot advancement and no-long term storylines. At the time they lost, their storyline was 'What 3-man group in WWE can _possibly_ beat them?' Was Big Show, Orton and Sheamus a thrown-together team? Sure, but we already know WWE doesn't care about teams and will rank two World Champion team _members_ above an actual team. They'd beaten damn-near everyone on the mid-to-upper card and Orton, Bryan and Kane were their longest running feuds. Sure, it wasn't a pay-per-view, but it made that episode one of the few 'as good as a ppv' episodes that year; like Punk/Cena earlier that year.

I'll admit, his antics made me want to watch every week. I also compared him to Stone Cold because he did seem to be that rebel against the system like Steve was in his heyday. And even during the heel turn it felt like he his heart wasn't really in it. When they booked it to be that he was taking a sabbatical for a while, I thought he was being written off due to injury or he wanted some time away like some competitors have done in the past. Little did I know or expect him to show up in AEW where his talents have been showcased better. I do hope there is at least a little bit of a chance he returns to WWE, and like Cody Rhodes, is shown to be that main event tier talent he has always been.

Dean Ambrose was always my favorite in the Shield because he had the most charisma in the group. They practically buried him in WWE, but I was still a supporter of his, especially when he won the belt at MITB. Moxley now is one of my favorite modern wrestlers. Since it was mentioned, a retrospective on AJ could be a fun little project down the road. His time in WWE has been wild, earning the spot of 'go-to guy' which was pretty much insane given he was a self made star before he ever got to WWE. He's the reason I got back into WWE at all, rather then just watching Rumbles and Mania each year. Second I saw him show up, I was watching week in, week out. Until it got to a boiling point and Vince's booking chased me off again. Anyway, it was nice seeing a peek at what made SHIELD special through the perspective of Dean-o, given I wasn't watching at the time. As always, you're the guy, Senior Zane! Hope those head shots didn't concuss you!

Agreed. I thought Styles was amazing when he showed up. He had these cool moves like the calf crusher. I wished WWE would push him more and give him one more main event run. He could have feuded with Regns. He has been booked to lose a lot since he returned to RAW in 2019.

Honestly I think Moxley's downfall in WWE was back in the shield days. When they debuted he was the defacto leader when they were just randomly attacking people. But then when Vince decided he was liked Rollins and Roman more that was pretty much the end for Dean. He was the funny sidekick. When he could of been so much more.

I liked Mox immediately after he left and went to New Japan. He wore wrestling gear instead of sweats or jeans and still had submission moves aside from one bulldog choke. Then after an amount of time in AEW he went from a hybrid of his NJPW style and his WWE style to just a bland hardcore brawler.

I gotta be honest outside of his terrible heel run in 2018/2019 I really look back fondly of Dean Ambrose WWE run from the shield days to his babyface run. Was Dean a watered down version of Jon Moxlet yeah but he was very entertaining. I think he had a great career in WWE as part of The Shiekd & his singles run minus that last year. I do think they missed the boat with boat with him by not making him the guy in 2016 by not making him the guy he should of dethroned Triple H at the main event of WrestleMania 32 for WWE Championship as he was the most over guy in the company. While I am enjoying his AEW run assuming Trips stays in charge of creative in WWE I hope to see him back in the company some day

Can't believe it's been 10 years since The Shield came into the fold. I was a huge fan of the group, Loved their debut TLC match against Kane, Bryan and Ryback and was happy to see them win belts! Wish the reign Dean had as a U.S Champ was treated better, but overall I was always a big fan of his time in WWE.
