1:15 That’s the biggest advantage the Taurus and Explorer have over the Crown Vic is AWD vs RWD. With a good set of winter tires simply turn off the traction control and power out. traction control only cuts power to wheels to prevent spin outs, turning it off allows you to use all of the available torque to get some momentum then you can turn it back on afterwards.
@tommyaintgotnojob5 жыл бұрын
Is traction control really necessary for an AWD?
@EricFortuneJr.5 жыл бұрын
@@tommyaintgotnojob Sometimes depending on the driver. Basically it cuts power to the wheel(s) that's slipping to prevent spin outs. If you know when to let up then it's no problem.

GordoGambler I’ve turned mines off at times to get out of deep situations, usually where the snow plows pile up the snow at the end of the driveway in NC. Thankfully I moved closer to the SE coast where it rarely snows here.

With the correct tires you dont even have to turn it off. I had to turn off tc in my dart with all seasons to get through a half an inch. With my blizzaks i dont have to touch it. Just turn it off when i want to play in open areas after a fresh snow. Also it's a manual transmission

A few years back me and beat partner were dispatched to BFE for a crazy old lady that said she need help and requested a "police humvee" to take her to the grocery. Of course this was during the worst snow storm of the year and she had almost shot at officers before because she was so schizophrenic.. but were the police and she said she needs help so we go... well here is how that went.... To get her home we were driving on dirt road covered in a 4+ inches of snow. We both had Crown Vic's at the time and figured they can handle it well, enough... well we were wrong... came around a wooded bend in a small valley about 1/4 mile from her home and encountered what was at least a 30 degree incline up the next little hill. we gave ourselves some room and one at a time floored it and ended up miraculously getting on top of the hill. We thought we were good to make to the residence until BAM, a big drift right in the middle of the road..we try to work through but end up sliding off the side of the road thankfully in area that was not covered by trees. Well we were stuck and radios were going in and out... Thankfully some good ole boys showed up delivering firewood in a old jacked up F-250... our first priority is making sure this lady was going to be ok so me my partner ask if we can bum a ride to the dead end to check on this old lady, They tell us to hop on and told us they would try to pull us out on the way back if we were there. So there we are, riding on the back of a old beat up F-250 at 10 a night in the middle of a snow storm talking about how we were gonna get back to civilization and talk about our tactical approach to this lady's home.. The good ole boys drop of us off just around the corner from the house to keep them safe. we do our thing and are able to get her to answer the door and get inside without incident. We noticed she had her shotgun sitting next to the door and my partner tells her he is going to put it in the other room just until we finish talking with her. Turns out she 10-4, heat is working plenty of food in the fridge and her meds are all good for a few days.... we listen to her rant about not getting a police humvee to take her into town, make her feel like she said her peace and at least try to seem like we empathize with her... she's happy and we call it a job well done and head back to the our cruisers, due to heavy snow we don't have much moon or starlight and both our flashlights decided to stop working.. and we start to hear something in the woods... we both draw tazer's for light (did not have weapon mounted lights at the time) and I tell him that I am going lethal and grab my gun.. There we are back to back with me covering the six, on dirt road in the middle of the years worst snow storm and thinking we are about get attacked some bear or other predator... then I see it.. I call it out.. "on your 4 o clock we got eyes in the woods" He confirms.. they are low though, a raccoon or something but I don't want to blow it away without target identification, plus its too much paper work for a discharge. I got the eyes in my sights though, ready to squeeze one off if it hits the fan... we continue walking... all the way till we get about 500ft from the cruisers, while they eyes walked parallel to us in the woods, at this time the eyes fall back a bit drift into the road way, able to get some light on it and finally see it looks like a dog. But I am thinking what sort of dog is out here wandering by itself and not even directly coming up to us..... thinking its possibly rabid and I am going to have to put it down.... no sooner had those thoughts cross my mind when it broke off and started walking in the opposite direction... shew We get back to the cruisers, no good ole boys in sight.. I tell my partner alright, lets do this, we get down shoveling snow out from under the wheels with our hands, occasionally poping up to check to see if the dog has returned.. nothing yet,, we continue digging. I finally get enough cleared that I am able to drive my car back on the dirt road and out of the drift.. my partner is still a no-go. his wheels are down into the mud... I get behind his cruiser and try to rock it while he nurses the gas... my uniform pants getting sprayed with mud every time there is wheel spin.. what seemed like 20 minutes of this we finally get him free and I look like a cross between the abominable snowman and a swamp monster. We delicately pump brakes down the grade but still slide, thankfully we have just enough control to keep it on the road.. we work our way back to a paved road and even though its covered in snow we feel like we were home free at that point... reestablish decent radio contact and code it out... on to the next call.

When roads are covered in ice like that, you drive at no more than 1/2 the posted speed limit. That ice is 'dry' so it still has 'some' grip. When it is wet ice, you drive at 1/4 the posted speed limit, and that is even if you can get going at all. On wet ice even going at 15 mph will take you a few hundred feet to come to a full stop.
