To summarize: 1,for a happy mood: any combination of major chords 1 4 and 5. 2, for a sad mood: use more minor chords. Example: 6415 and 63451. 3, for a hopeful mood: use combination of major&minor chords with ascending root notes, and then settle down. Example: 4561.

I’d amend that too. I’d add that angst can be conveyed through more dissonant chord movements, with emphasis on minor intervals. Major chords tend to convey power over meekness, so they give the sense of anger, while minor chords are more wistful. See I - bIII - IV, I - bIII - bV, i - iv - bII, I7 - IV7, i - bvii - iv, i - bVI, i - v, I - bVI7. Each of these have different effects while staying generally in this category, and generally following that rule. The chord progressions that emphasize major tonality will sound angrier or more rebellious, while the minor-tending ones will sound more pleading or wistful. Hope generally is conveyed through chromatic brightness and sharp or upward major intervals, with emphasis on major chords. A contrast of major overcoming minor tends to occur in hopeful passages - that is, the major tonality in the end exceeds the minor tonality even though challenged by it. I - II - IV - I, bVI - bVII - I, I - bVII - IV - I (the tonic being the brightening chord for these two), I - VI... these all tend to create a sense of hope or enlightened resolution. Humor in music can be created through a sense of frenzy. This can be created through disparate major chords. I - II, I - #IV, I - bVI, I - III, I - bVI - III, I - VII... these all can elicit this effect. The whole tone scale is the epitome of this; in fact, all of these short of I - VII can be formed through it. Horror or anxiety in a chord progression - or more accurately, a sense of looming mood or ominousness - are a bit more complicated. They can be achieved through ascending in minor, descending sharply in major, descending in minor, or through sharp intervals in minor. i - ii - bIII - IV, i - bvi, i - bI (or VII), i - bII, bIII - II - bII - I/i, i - iii, i - v - bII - i, I - iv - bII, i - bVI - iv - bII, i - vi and I - i all have potential for it. But atmosphere and arrangement can do wonders. Also, a happy or content chord progression tends to fit the general form of I - IV - V or I - V - IV, but any chords can be thrown in on the way. The Pachelbel’s Canon progression (I - V - vi - iii - IV - I - IV - V) is a great example of this, as well as the 50s progression (I - vi - IV - V) and the “More Than a Feeling” progression (I - IV - vi - V), as well as I - V - vi - IV and I - V - bVII - IV (this one’s more solemn, due to the borrowed chord). An example of a chord progression that is happy through this as well as seemingly unending is the “Hey Ya!” progression (I - IV - IV - V - VI). And a minor-borrowing chord progression like I - IV - bVI - V has a bit of flair but in the end sounds very happy and pure. It’s almost like the dominant chord reassures the key.

Thank you so much for teaching and being humble & kind enough to teach the masses for FREE, greatly appreciated. I think it really unfair to get peoples hopes up by teaching the first half of a piece, then at the end of the lesson, we are told that we can learn the second half on their website, and omitting to inform you that you HAVE to PAY to finish the piece off, very sneaky unfortunately, so thank you for being humble and understanding peoples circumstances money wise, thank you again.

Chords are the foundation for western music only and the way they are currently used was 'established' by classical composers like Bach. In medieval times, most music didn't used chords, it was polyphonic and relied on counterpoint.

Very true!

Thanks for the video, I have a couple of questions: 1.For the hopeful mood you start with IV and finish with I, what kind of cadence is that? 2.I know there isn't rules in music but aren't we suppose to start the progression with the tonic (I)? 3. If we consider the IV as the tonic in your progression, does that mean we can say this progression's root is C ? Thank you
@PianoteOfficial4 жыл бұрын
Wow great questions! 1. I don't know if there is a name for it. It has elements of an imperfect cadence going from the V to the vi. And then I guess the closest thing it would be to is a plagal cadence. I hope that helps. 2. Not at all. Just because it's common doesn't mean it's a rule. You can start a progression on ANY note in the key. 3. No, because the notes we are using are not within the key of C. You "could" say that the tonal centre is C, but that's getting into more advanced modal jazz theory. We can just change the key of a progression based on its starting note. As I say, the key signature is what determines the root note. I hope that helps!

love this channel. I always know i’m gonna learn something valuable for songwriting. I really liked the minor chord progression. can you elaborate on that more and show how to built tension between the chords. like augmented chord or inversions or any other trick? keep up the always amazing work !
@PianoteOfficial5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Definitely play around with inversions to change the sound of the progression. To add more tension you could also try adding the diminished chord on the 7th note of the scale. So in the key of G, the 7th note is F#. The chord built on that is F#dim (F#-A-C). As for creating more tension, that really relates back to functional harmony, and the 'role' each chord plays within the scale. It's a bigger topic than I can write out here I'm afraid.
