“He has never been known to use a word that might send a reader to the dictionary." - William Faulkner “Poor Faulkner. Does he really think big emotions come from big words?" - Ernest Hemingway Ending on this note, I think you should do a video on Faulkner's convoluted style of writing. Cheers!

I've never read much Hemingway save for passages and quotes online, but what I've always appreciated about his writing style is that he doesn't try and make himself sound "oh so smart" like so many other writers. He just writes in an almost conversational format that flows beautifully. It's just nice not having to pull out the thesaurus every two seconds xD Loved this video, I would love to see more literature content in the future, my vote is for Palahniuk! Yes, it's pulpy and fun, but he's definitely my favorite author. P.S. Congrats on 150K!!!!!!!

Completely agree. He definitely knew how to write for the common man. It all feels very accessible with so much more richness underneath. I haven't read any Palahniuk but I've obviously heard so so many good things. Is there a particular book of his I should start with? And thanks! Now I got one more video before I jump in to ours!

Film Radar Choke is pretty good too. I liked Fight Club too even though I had already watched the movie. The absurdity of his stories are what I enjoy most about him. Ever read any Bret Easton Ellis? If you haven't and you enjoy Palahniuk, I'm sure you'd like him too!

One way to be distinctive is to use the style of hemingway and someone totally different and someone else totally different and then combine them, which means reading writers from different times. You can program your mind to by reading them all and echoing them all, while you are deep in ketosis or took a natural brain pill, and magnesium. One way to do this on purpose is to look at your piece, like it is food, you add certain seasons at certain times when the food is cooking, and then sometime the same seasoning at a later time. Those seasonings you do this with, are very significant to the mood of the piece

Hills Like White Elephants is the greatest short story ever written. It is the saddest thing ever written, and as I read it I got all choked up. Mostly dialogue but the conversations were short and sad and full of mysterious emotion and I read it several times and each time I read it my throats get tighter with emotion and my breath came in short gasps. Later I understood the story well. It is a very true story

Beautifully done. If I might add one more example. Here in Argentina (spanish lenguage) we use the next phrase. "Cuando desperto, el dinosaurio todavía estaba allí." which translate to: "When he woke up, the dinosaur was still there". This is part of a short story or micro story by Augusto Monterroso. And it's considered a great example as to how to convey a storytelling. Whit the best regards. I send you a hugh from Argentina. Keep the incredible work

Jaime Monsalve that the writer meant for the story to represent humanity ignoring serious problems that don’t seem to touch them ( the dinosaur had not not eaten him yet) and expecting them to go away. But the dinosaur is still there as will be the problem.

It's clear to see why so many channels are Film/TV; it definitely brings in an audience, what with KZbin algorithms and just mainstream craze, and no doubt a lot of your viewers watch those primarily Film/TV channels (like me haha). I'll admit that I got into watching your stuff through your Simpsons video haha, but your editing style and writing voice is what kept me watching. You gotta good perspective going. Hemingway masculinized writing in his time. He exchanged beautiful, flowing, emotion evoking prose for what you see is what you get, straight to the point, economic, facts only, words. I love the verbose purple prose of the classics but I'm glad he created a new style for us to enjoy as well. His writing is very editorial because his first writing gig was for a newspaper in Kansas City. They had a set of rules for journalistic writing that he continued to follow throughout his entire career. His work is very easy to follow and understand and focuses on generally masculine activities such as war, fishing, hunting, boxing, bullfighting, etc. This makes him an excellent author to get young boys and men interested in literature. I wish more high schools would put more Hemingway in their curriculum. Young men aren't usually readers and that's just because they aren't aware there are books out there for them too.

Excellent video essay. Thank you! Now I may improve my writing technique - in some way. :) And about the authors I'd like to know more - maybe you could make a video about Truman Capote, a true story genius? His stories were often simple and had this "everyday" feeling, yet were they entertaining and complex when it comes to character building. I read some of his books - in polish, it's my language - and truly loved his works.

Another great example of Hemingway's 'iceburg' approach is his short story "Hills Like White Elephants" in which the subject of the conversation that the characters are having is never clearly stated, yet is understood by the reader sub-textually.

Absolutely! I thought about including that short story but thought it made the video a little long. Great example though!

I really like the style of your videos, more people should see your work. Thank you for inspiring me. Why isn't real art trending? Your videos are like luxurious chocolate cakes and people prefer eating 3 days old popcorn with all the tea spilling and reveals of the little stars of KZbin. I wish you good luck, this should be your primary work that pays accordingly.

Since I discorver the minimalist writing style, I wanted information about this particular style hard to understand. (It is buried in French) Now, I know how it works. We have the habit to follow the author's direction, not our's. This is why I didn't get it! I study his style in "The sun also rise", originally, I wanted "Old man and the sea" from my library. 3:30 The repetition of words shows their function as a tool, not as language. In short, the minimalist style encourages the reader to add a meaning. We are watching, we are interpretating. Words are tools, not decorations. There is no psychological depth. Only fact. And we create a story out of it. This particular style reminds me of comic books. Dialogues and actions are dominants, no psychological depth. We apply a moral compass to describe the characters, their thought and their motivations. What is the point of counting syllabes of words? Even a long word is useful.

Writing, it is like music or painting, you have to find your own voice, or at least be honest to it. For if you study, or emulate the style of others, too much, you might drown, and never express yourself. Elvis Presley, never wrote any of his songs, save for maybe, My Happiness - written for(?), recorded for, his mother, as a gift - but his interpretation of all the songs he sung was always original, his own voice, with no apparent influence or emulation of another artist. There have been moments when writing that it felt like I was holding a paintbrush rather than a pen. Ever feel that way? : Words, sentences, like brush-strokes?

I love that! And you're totally right, you can be influenced by someone's style but it must form your own unique hybrid, like Hemingway with Stein and Cubism. I love the allusion of brushing words like a painter. :)
@kellykitkat40
@kellykitkat40 6 жыл бұрын
The challenge is to avoid that hybridization, aka that hegellian dialectic : thesis-antithesis-antithesis. The great ones, break the mold, to create a new archetype, "something new under the sun". As Nicholas Cage said of Jim Carey's performance in Pet Detective : "Well, we haven't seen that before." You want to avoid, The Blob, and be not, common, amongst thieves or nobility, boring.
