Writers on Translation is Babel's new series of video interviews with writers about their translation experiences and the books in translation that have influenced their lives and writing.
The second episode, produced in collaboration with TOLEDO-Übersetzer·innen im Austausch der Kulturen, features Swiss poet Fabio Pusterla, one of the major contemporary poets writing in Italian and longtime translator of Philippe Jaccottet, interviewed by fellow poet Stefano Raimondi.
Pusterla discusses his twin vocation as poet and translator, detailing with his usual vividness and clarity how the two arts have interacted and nourished each other during his career, what it means to translate poetry, how translating poetry forces you to become a poet, as well as the relationship between meaning, rhythm, and meter, with examples and anecdotes from his own and other poets' and translators' work.
