Yeeessssss! The worst part of NaNo for me is that people will just drop off after November. It always feels like there’s nobody left to talk writing and do sprints with because we all get burnt out by speedrunning in a single month. Also Preptember sounds SO much better than Preptober on the punny-ness scale.
@KateCavanaugh3 ай бұрын
AGREED! Especially because I often still had story left to write at the end of the month, but the slump was magnified when I was on my own trying to finish things bahah.

Honestly, an October, November, December writing challenge sounds way more fun and interesting to me. And I love the idea of people just doing their own writing challenges and ignoring NaNo if they are going to be gross.

It was sad about NaNo but it's great that different kinds of challenges are emerging now. I'll be participating in the Pathfinders Writing Collective challenge this coming November which was started by two writers on Instagram after the NaNo drama and I like the idea of spreading the challenge across Q4 too. Looks like the later half of the year is always going to be my main writing time haha.

I was an ML last year. I had a co-ML. We were *SO* excited about it and then....things happened. It was awful to have to decide to keep going or cancel everything. Luckily, we had a regular writing group that met weekly leading up to it, so we just kept going like we normally would with our writing group. Neither of us signed up to ML again, and we all deleted our accounts. We were all so sad about it! Love this 100k challenge idea!

I didn’t even know NaNoWriMo was an organization and not just a fun event/challenge people just came together on their own on the internet to do. I’m very much someone who likes having the fixed dates- I’ve always wanted to do NaNoWriMo (the “write a book in a month” challenge, not the actual NaNoWriMo wordcount thingy or whatnot), but I’ve never had the time. I really like this idea to do it over three months (the same three months, too, so we can put it in our calendars), I like that it’s around ~33kish words per month (sustainable pace), and I like that it’s close to a full book length! Maybe I’ll try this instead this year. I’d love to finally finish a story (instead of starting it and then dropping it), and this seems like a fun way to do this. And also, you can celebrate with finishing a new book for the New Year! (That could be a hashtag toward the last two weeks, ha! #NewBookForTheNewYear). Anyway, great video, and great idea!

NaNo was the event that got me into doing my insane writing challenges in the first place, and it is so disappointing to see what's happening with them. I really need this. I felt like the writing world I’ve spent 2 decades in is collapsing (with not just NNWM but author’s skeletons coming out and just so much coming to light I wasn’t emotionally ready for) and this feels like a restoration of the writer community spirit I was craving. I could, of course, do my own challenge. But it felt really lonely when November had become a fun space to create and commiserate because everyone was doing it. I started NNWM back in 2005 and no one around knew what it was - and grew from a fun challenge where online communities thrived to pretty much a staple, that the last few years have been rough to process. I’m totally in 🖋️and ready for this. A 100k challenge over 3 months is more doable and satisfying. And I know because I wrote the first draft of my first novel in 3 months 😅. I’m so excited - thank you for doing this!❤

I'm wondering if the 33k per month of this challenge would be more doable. I used to burn out bad after NaNo, so I'm so curious to see if with 33k I can keep going for longer than month, and actually finish my book without having to take a break in the middle. Respect!! I've set up a little excel spreadsheet tracker with a graph (to look at the line going up) last year, didn't end up doing much with it, but now that it's ready I'm going to try writing a whooping 100 words every day for a month lol The goal is really just to sit myself down to write regularly, I know that if I do I'm guaranteed to find 100 words somewhere, and the overflow will cover any skipped days. October has been a draw every day challenge month for me for years (and the og challenge also had a stupid scandal that caused even more different ones to spawn!), so it seems fun to tack on another month for trying to do another thing every day :) You'd think it'd be easier to make yourself do things you already know you like doing more often! And yet!

Controversial opinion (but Controversial is my middle name): I don't generally have a problem with AI usage for art. As someone who struggles immensely with perfectionism and an upsettingly bad attention span (I am 99.99% certain I have ADHD), I completely understand wanting to have an easier way to make my art. If I had the money, I'd hire a writer to work closely with so they could write my stories for me exactly how I want them. Same if there were the perfect customizable AI and it wasn't so demonized to use. I fully admit I would use it in that case. Having said that, when it comes to a competition (somewhat a competition) like NaNo, I don't feel that AI should be allowed. I don't care how others make their art regularly, but in a case like NaNo, it would be cheating. Then there is the whole issue of "Does AI copy the work of others?" But that's a different conversation on the topic.

I love your rainbow keyboard. Very energizing. Maybe because I’m a painter. ( :

Last year, I did a Story-A-Day challenge in November - I pulled prompts and would either write a flash fiction or short-short or write a synopsis or outline for a longer story every day. I'm probably going to do it again this year.

I'm starting work on my 3rd book to self publish so this is perfect timing! #100KwithKate sounds great!!

I'd really like to make a comic/manga one-shot challenge. I really want to get into writing comics but they always suggest starting shorter stories, there's one I have that I want to work on but I'm so drained from work and socializing it doesn't seem like there's any time for any creative work. Strangely the only time I'm not like this is when I participate art challenges, maybe I need a challenge to get my head turned into the right mindset and keep going than focusing on doing as much of nothing as I can before my work week comes back. I was actually thinking maybe I can use this as a Q4 challenge, to finish a one-shot comic within the last quarter as my goal!

I would love to join in on this challenge! Love the wiggle room for both the word count and time frame. I always thought of creating my own challenge, always fail, but it never stops me from starting again and again. I suppose I love the idea more than I love the actual hard work haha. I've been watching Kate for around 7 years and always looked forward to the NANO writing vlogs. They motivated me, and I'm glad the writing challenges aren't stopping any time soon. The beauty of it is that we can challenge ourselves without NANO, we just needed a push. I love using the site even outside of November because it keeps my word counts and book files nice and organized. If someone can give me a new site for that, I'd be very grateful. If NANO got their hands dirty, especially in those children's case, I don't want to contribute.

love this idea, I'm in the middle of a couple of projects at the moment and will be doing well to finish either of them by the end of the year but if you do this again next year I'm on board.

I started rewriting my novel in September, so while it may not be 100k for the three months (more like 50k), I will certainly be there with everyone!

I want to join but I write in german. German words are often so much longer. We can describe so much in one long word. It sounds so hard... I've looked up the ratio and usually english texts have roughly 20-30% more words. So I'll probably go down to 80K for this challenge when writing in german.
