Kinda sad the sludge monster in a mall idea was overlooked. A creature born from forgotten, toxic waste, wreaking havoc on the unsuspecting employees of a dying, empty mall, just as overlooked and ignored as the environmental horror that’s now literally out to get them.

I just want to say Earlier this year, I was nearly at the point of throwing my writing hopes and dreams in the bin. For almost two years, I'd been struggling to weave together the character ideas I had in my mind into a thematically coherent plot, literally throwing them into any genre I could, hoping something would stick. Nothing did, and I was at a loss with what to do, frustrated that no matter how much time I had to sit down and write, nothing properly stuck. You're writing advice (specifically having characters be a specific perspective on a theme) has single handedly rejuvenated my passion for writing and brought me to a place and progress point I never thought I'd actually reach. Having your channel videos pop into my recommended back in June of this year was like having the stars align in my writing after a literal dark night of the soul lol So er... Thank you!

In all seriousness I struggle a lot with the actual EVENTS of a story (themes, check. character arcs, check. specific situations? hard to commit to) and watching you guys puzzle this one out together was really insightful. You guys don't fuck around!!! You throw out ideas until one sticks with no insecure hesitancy and you end up with a really fun, engaging story. I've been binging your videos all day and I feel so seen by/connected to the ideas you're presenting. As a horror enthusiast and storyteller, the fun thing about horror is that its not just a bow tie over a bad movie script, but it’s completely dependent on the viewer. A documentary on birds can be just as scary to someone with a bird phobia as “It” might be to a lot of people. In my opinion, the bigger the audience, the better the horror (audience meaning whoever finds the theme/subject scary). For example, “Talk to Me” is so good cuz not only does it have scary demons, but it also shows self degradation, the main character knows what she’s doing is bad, but she does it anyway. Like, i know eating too much sugar is bad but i still eat it. It’s the fear of what happens to her will happen to me (coming from someone who doesn’t get scared easily from horror movies anymore).

Love watching your process man, this was a really enjoyable vid! A couple of ideas, if i may be so bold... 1- Since the movie is called Ride or Die it would make sense that Nat's big internal conflict (that the events of the movie will solve) is whether to stick with her small-town loser boyfriend or take a leap and start a new post-college life without him. So maybe she starts the movie with a job offer in the big city on the table, and is on the cusp of breaking up with Reed, but can't bring herself to do it out of for fear of hurting him, and also out of fear for the future, and so she bottles it and agrees to go to the dumb funfair instead. That way her flaw is responsible for getting her into the whole mess in the first place. It would be a nice mirror of Tim/Cas's relationship too. Like all the characters, Nat needs to learn the courage to make decisions for herself that may be painful in the moment but will ultimately be good for herself and everyone. So maybe you could have Reed's character arc be that he's firmly in denial of the changes that are happening in their lives and wants everything to stay the same, maybe even telling Nat that she's his ride-or-die in an attempt to get her to stay with him, but when it comes to the crunch he learns to let the past go and let Nat go on to live her life and fulfil her potential without him, and he sacrifices himself to Crowbones to save her. And she in turn will learn from this and achieve her potential for the final fight with Crowbones, making a short-term painful decision that has the long-term effect of successfully defeating him. 2- Don't these rides often end with a big drop, like a log flume? Like, a real symbolic 'take the plunge' moment? How about the whole ride's on fire and the rails are collapsing, and she decides to send the cart over the drop with herself and Crowbones in it, killing him but miraculously surviving herself - some kind of 'lucky pack' twist that was set up earlier.

my (rough) idea for a good prologue could be Bonnie and Corny (or whatever the pirate guy's name was), and someone does something that parralels Nat's conflict, kind of seeing how Nat's death would go if she hadn't evolved, along with setting up a good mentor role for Bonnie. This would then come back around during the mentor scene between Nat and Bonnie, where the viewer would see her referencing the prologue, and we figure it all out while developing Bonnie, Corny and most important Nat, through the parralel given to her in the prologue.

This is such a great video showing how the writing process can be so fluid but also with a clear direction. And how great it can be to write with someone else to bounce ideas off of! It's such a stereotype that writing is this solemn lonely process and it was awesome to see you two working so well together. I hope you guys make a sequel documentary that show you guys continuing to workshop this! It really is insane how quickly this has become one of the best channels about writing.

This is a trap a lot of horror movies have tbh. The final girl is written to be the final girl at the beginning and making their death tragic isn't a factor... Cause they won't die. Not dying is their whole personality. Personally, I prefer to write all the characters first then randomly select a percentage to survive and then who that percentage is. It makes me need to write all the characters fully as though I needed to get everything about them out before they die and as a result you have to be more efficient with characterisation.

This has quickly become my favorite writing channel on KZbin. I agree thoroughly with the logic-ization of emotional beats and themes and character arcs. Everything can be rationalized, and once you have your roadmap of character motivation you can pretty much wing dialogue and scene structure. My biggest problem now is that I am pretty awful at coming up with characterization/personailties beyond basic disposition and temperament. That's what I'm working on currently.

Some glaring problems in this script: 1: You don't have a theme There is no theme that ties this whole story. I know I harp about how characters can carry a story, but this just isn't it. These characters are just not interesting enough to carry a story with such a weak opposing force (story wise). They need more pushing them to create drama. You're on the right track with giving them higher motives than just survive, but you need a bigger push. You need to do more than what you're doing. Have the characters have different wants and push that drama to the max. Have one character want to have everyone else be safe, even at the cost of themselve while another only cares about themself, have a character who doesn't care about self preservation and just wants revenge, ect. Have group conflict be the reason that leads to character death. As is, only Reed dies because of his own character in the script. Anyone else could be the "finnal girl" and nothing really changes. Tldr: character either need their charaterization pushed futher so thier own failure and success comes from them, or remade to fit a theme so the "finnal girl" survives cause she evoled with the theme. 2: Villian is lazy, slasher trash Remeber how you said horror flicks don't get a pass just because they're horror? You did that here with this villain. He's pretty much a force of nature instead of a character. Sure in making the movie he could look really cool or have a really charasmiatic actor and be made into a star, but in writing he sucks. 3: You do not put characters deaths far enough apart Out of the 5 deaths, 2 happen right after another. This leads to it feeling like only 3 deaths scenes happen. You can do this multipal ways, maybe nerf bones so he can only really kill one person at a time. (I had a big theosis about this rule I made called "villain can't squad wipe" but I couldn't for the life of me word it well.) 4: Ending just needs a rework It just sounds unwheleming as hell, not much to say. There isn't character growth, a perticular reason for the girl living besides being lucky, and fuck I can't think of something big enough to go with those 2 to complete rule of three.

If you haven’t already figured out how to do the mentor scene with Nat, maybe make it so she explains to Nat how she just went along with whatever Corny wanted and helped him with everything, in a way facilitating his death. Nat could then use this story to help push herself to make her own decisions instead of just following along, so she doesn’t end up getting herself killed. Just a thought. I might have forgotten Nat’s characterization so sorry if it did.

I feel like the punch of horror comes from its *existential* terror. We’re not scared by death, we’re scared by the annihilation of the self, and that in trying to preserve our selves, our selves doom ourselves. As in, the reason we want to live- to sate our curiosity, bond with people, etc-could be the reason we run back into the fire, and ultimately perish.

I love this so much. For a while now, you have made videos about specific ideas in regards to story creation, which have been absolutely awesome. This channel is a great resource for deep dives into specific ideas. Now, we see a full script creation where those ideas are integrated. It’s awesome! Edit: if this ever makes a fundraiser to produce, I will chip in

Congrats on predicting my criticism haha I was going to say I hoped some intuitive esoteric frosting would end up on top of the practical, justified framework. It's probably just for film nerds but sometimes a film that is continuous plot devices begins to wear on you and you crave some curveballs, something you've never quite seen etc Love what you've done so far

Really good stuff! I'm in my freshman year of college and looking at the creative process from someone who knows more than me is really insightful! I'm also just really impressed by how quickly you made all of these characters feel like characters and not cardboard cutouts of stereotypes. Keep up the great stuff man :]

This is great Lucas. I love to see people working together to make something. Stories are my favorite and one of the creations I relate to making the most, so this was a lovely treat. I really like your sticky noting outline process. It pleases the tactile learner in me. Definitely want to try it when I'm in the editing stage of my novel. It was cool to "meet" Turner, you guys make a great creative team. Congratulations on your graduations! That is fantastic. Enjoy some time off! I will totally check out the google doc for Ride or Die, and will give you a big ol' yes please on more Ride or Die content when you're both ready. Hayley ^_^

The outlining process with the sticky notes was really cool to see. Seeing the theme, all the characters in service of it, and how each of their scenes realized the theme inspired me. I opened a spreadsheet that same night I watched this video. I may not have finished it, but it was the most excited I was to write a new story instead of the “I’ve been thinking about and improving this story for 5 years” story.

this is awesome and so helpful for writing for the first time :P im working on a 1800s cosmic horror show about a archivist who has collect magical items and plans to use them, to make the world realize that magic is real but he keeps getting investigated by a detective that discovers strange mystical murders (who suspects it has somehow to do with the archivist ofc) but i want this to be a good show so i decided to first make a simple short film to dive in the first time writing, because i realized that i just need to make something and change it over and over instead of thinking to hard, it will be about two characters in a post apocalyptic world where the main character has barely any emotions (because he is a genetically engineer born human) and the side character is a very emotional woman, so over time one finds out how to use emotions and the other how to contain them. im quite proud of making this up, i think this is a very good way to train some writing and get a short film going at the same time, this has made me think however about characters and needing a resolve/arc, i will give this short film a resolve for both characters but would you need to give all your characters a resolved ending or would only the MC be enough? PS having found your channel has been a delight you have talked about all the things i strongly agree with or needed and love your voice btw xD

The "sadistic elevator" idea's already been done, twice. First in a Dutch film called The Lift (1983) and then again in the American remake The Shaft (2001), AKA: Down.

I don’t know what the prologue ended up looking like but i think if you guys wanted to do more with Bonnie, she could have been one of the people in the prologue and something could happen there that could set up her character for the rest of the story

Excellent video & no small feat to edit this process down to something watchable & digestible. Would have been even better if you'd gone through the kinds of revisions you made in the final passes / finishing touches on the script draft toward the end, but I know how fiddly that can be; would have probably been quite a nightmare to distill down into worthwhile moments. As it stands, I second the other comments which say anything this channel produces is gold. There are no bad videos. Thanks as ever for the quality control; recognizing how much work it must take to consistently crank out this tier of useful, high-impact videos. Signed the petition. Hope the movie gets made & that graduation represents the radiant nascency of grand new undertakings. Knock em dead.
