What questions do you have about rhetorical analysis?

I mainly struggle with writing my conclusion paragraphs. Usually, by the time that I end up starting the conclusion paragraph, I end up with little time, so they end up not being great. I also tend to always use "In conclusion" when writing my paragraph, but my teacher says that there are better words that I can use, but she never says what. Do you know what other words I can use at the beginning of my conclusion paragraphs? Also, what should I always mention or bring up when writing my conclusion paragraph?

In a lot of cases, if you just omit the phrase "in conclusion" at the beginning of the sentence by leave the rest of the sentence, it's okay. My students tend to like the "When considering/examining" sentence frame I mention in the video. Something else I'd recommend would be to look at the released sample essays, particularly the higher scoring ones, and see how they conclude. Even if it is a different prompt, it might be a good model for you. I know it can be really hard to break the habit of saying "in conclusion" or "to conclude." Usually you don't need that phrase to signal the conclusion. It's okay without it. You could try something like "Throughout out the letter/speech..." or "Writer's portrayal of ISSUE evokes a sense of..." That would help you re-establish the rhetorical situation/restate your thesis.

I keep running in to time issues. And the problem I have is with recognizing what the author's rhetorical strategies quickly. In your videos, you recommended various annotation strategies to outline. But, I found those methods to be very time consuming So, I end up keeping the SPACE CAT in the back of my mind and just write as I go without an outline. It's not ideal, but that seems the be the only way I can get anything done. Are there any quicker outline methods that could save me time while also improving my comprehension? Or do I just have to find a way to comprehend the document? If that is the case? What can I do to improve that?

If you can analyze SPACE CAT then you are addressing the rhetorical situation. Some things that have helped my students who struggle with time management is to write a really short (usually 1-5 word) bullet point of the main idea of each paragraph or the dominant choice they see. If there is nothing obvious, they skip it. It’s not necessarily ideal, but it’s better than nothing. Also, keep in mind that there are certain choices that will be present regardless of the passage. For example, every passage will have language (diction/syntax/tone) that you can analyze. I one read an entire essay about diction and tone. Based on the rubric, it earned a 4/6. The student wrote about what they knew. Remember that choices are what the writer “does,” so flattery, humility, and humor are also choices. Appeals tend to work well with other choices but can work on their own. I think the best thing to do is practice. I have found that practice improves pacing and helps students find their own method. Some of the methods I discuss are ones my students have done for over a year. It works great for some of them but others still struggle with time management. So they know in a panic situation to analyze language or appeals in terms of the rhetorical situation and to look for other common choices such as juxtaposition. It’s not in every passage, but it is in many. Thinking of a choice as what the writer does might also help. Your reader won’t care is you say “metaphor” or “compares.” So don’t get too stressed about terms. Hope that helped a little. If there are particular topics you’d like me to cover in a video, let me know. Thanks for commenting!

@@CoachHallWrites thank you. That clarified a lot. And our language teacher does not really prepare us for the ap exam and he hasn't responded to my requests to read my essay for weeks now. So, I've been writing it on my own and self grading it, which is not ideal since I don't know if I'm accurate or not. Is there any way I could share my timed writing with you for feedback? I understand that you are busy and if you aren't able to, what can I do?

Hi! Thanks for your video. May I write my thesis with two/three main ideas in the essay instead of two/three strategies?

Coach Hall Writes btw would it be appropriate to conclude the essay simply by copying and paste my thesis if I’m gonna run out of time? My teacher said that it is not ok to do so

Lihui Wong id say just change a few words if you’re short on time. The conclusion isn’t worth a point so it’s not necessary.

I think there is a link to it in the description of the rubric video I did recently. You can also access it on The College Board’s website.
