Hey, Coach. I love your videos. I wanted to take the time to personally thank you. I started back at school with Summer I back in June, this year. After twenty-something years, it was quite an adjustment. After the first week, I felt like a fraud, like I absolutely didn't belong going after a higher educational situation. The first essay was straightforward, but the second was a rhetorical essay. I was completely, hopelessly lost. Like, what in the pita chips is this nonsense? After coming across and consuming a few of your coaching videos, I felt a calm understanding and followed my prompt but completely rewrote the essay. I received a 95 on the Rubric for that essay and ultimately earned a perfect 4.0 for the class. Your channel is a gem. Also, your handle is pretty clever. So, anywhom. Thank you.

As a student soon taking the AP Language and Composition Exam, I know I should be aiming for quality over quantity. In my body paragraphs, how many of the in-depth sentences should be used to produce a well-written body paragraph. I am referring to the sentence frame example at 13:10.
@CoachHallWrites4 жыл бұрын
Great question. I don’t think there is a particular number of sentences. I notice that students tend to sometimes say what was conveyed in that sentence frame in 2-3 separate sentences. This makes the essay look longer, but it’s deceptive. The goal is to vary your sentence structure. You don’t want to jam pack every sentence, but it is good to have dependent clauses at the beginning or end of some of your sentences to improve the flow. This can also help you incorporate specific information about the rhetorical situation. Regardless of how your write, you are correct quality is important. Be specific and offer analysis.

Do you think a two point or three point thesis will be better this year because of time? I am hoping to get a 5.
@CoachHallWrites4 жыл бұрын
I think it depends on the passage and how you feel it’s going. If you think you only have time to tackle two major points or write two body paragraphs, then do what you can to develop those thoroughly. I think it would be better to have two quality paragraphs than 3 rushed body paragraphs that are underdeveloped. However, you might have to wait until you see your passage to make that call. Quality over quantity.

@CoachHallWrites, could you please explain the difference between the message and the purpose? I get them confused
@CoachHallWrites4 жыл бұрын
The message is what the writer is saying and the purpose is why they are saying it. For example, the message could be “perseverance” and the purpose could be “to motivate.” That’s a simple example, but hopefully that makes sense.
@andrewchen25904 жыл бұрын
Why are people saying it's 2 questions? It's just a rhetorical analysis.
@vanessacruz14024 жыл бұрын
okay just to be clear, we should write about their choices/ main points and how that was conveyed through their writing skills?
@CoachHallWrites4 жыл бұрын
Yes
@gracedavies30624 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for your video! I have a question. How does this commentary work in with the rhetorical strategy? We should choose one rhetorical strategy per paragraph, let that drive the evidence, and then comment on the evidence using these formats? And the 6 bases to cover are in our commentary and analysis about why this rhetorical element is chosen to strengthen the purpose or because of the audience, for example. I just wanted to confirm! Thanks.
@CoachHallWrites4 жыл бұрын
Yes, that would be one way to approach it and develop your ideas. One thing to remember is that you want layers of evidence and commentary. So you can embed a quote into a sentence, offer some commentary and then transition to another piece of evidence, presumably something else related to that choice or section of the passage and then add more commentary. This will also allow you to vary your commentary a bit because you can write about different parts of the rhetorical situation. Also, while you absolutely need a main point or choice for your paragraph, don’t forget that choices work together. For example, you might analyze the writers use of detail. You could examine the impact of certain words in that description and what tone they create.

So you talked a lot about the historical situation and how that plays a big part in our analysis. However, I am confused where to incorporate this into my essay. Do I put this all in the introduction before my thesis, or in each of my body paragraphs, do I mention how a specific rhetorical device is influenced by the rhetorical situation? My worry is not about figuring out the rhetorical situation, it is about how to incorporate it and where to put it and such.
@CoachHallWrites4 жыл бұрын
Most students tend to find it easier to include a sentence of context in the intro. You can include it in your body paragraphs depending on the choice that you are analyzing and what your passage is. For example, in the Florence Kelley prompt, she is speaking to suffragists. Her call to action is to join with the men to end child labor. It might be worth noting in your essay that she says this because women did not have the right to vote, and quite frankly, if she had not made the rhetorical choices she did, perhaps some would not have seen the issue of child labor as pressing enough. Maybe they would have felt it was a departure from their cause. If she had led with “join with the men” instead of ending with it, she might have alienated some of her audience who might have resented this call to action (without the build up.) Another example would be Gandhi’s letter. The prompt essentially tells us that he did lead a March, yet India did not gain its independence until 17 years later. You could include that context in your intro or conclusion, depending on where you felt it fit best.

hi, I am taking the AP lang exam in a few days and this video as well as the "types of passages you may encounter on the exam" both helped me! I took note of all the sentence structures for each section of the rhetorical situation. What would be some tips on combining these sentence structures to form the commentary ? I understand they are all individual, but how could I analyze a piece of evidence in the most effective way possible spending little time? Is there a number of sentences that I should look out for?
@CoachHallWrites4 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t worry about a certain number of sentences. However, aim for more commentary than evidence. Possibly 2, maybe 3 sentences of commentary depending on what you are writing.
@CoachHallWrites4 жыл бұрын
As for combining them, it really depends on what you are writing, but certain topics such as audience and purpose tend to go well together. Analyzing the context or exigence and purpose can also combine well, depending on the passage. I’m working on a video where I write an essay and talk through what I’m doing. Hopefully I can clarify this in that video as well.

So many thanks for your videos!! It literally saves my life. And here's a small questions: if I just analyze all the rhetorical situation in only paragraph 1, how could I avoid repetition in my paragraph 2 or even 3? Since the situation does not change, that makes me confused
@CoachHallWrites4 жыл бұрын
Glad it helped. Yes, it can feel a bit redundant, but one thing to consider would be how that choice relates to the rhetorical situation. The commentary might be a bit similar, but if you are analyzing a different choice in a different paragraph, ask yourself how/why the writer uses that specific choice at that point in their argument/speech/letter, etc.

Great video. Do you have any tips if we read the story but just absolutely cannot find any devices?
@CoachHallWrites3 жыл бұрын
If you can’t find devices, ask yourself “what is the writer doing?” Flattery, criticism, etc are all choices too. Also, search for rhetorically accurate verbs. There are a couple good lists out there that have strong verbs to use. These verbs help convey choices as well.

Are we allowed to use soapstone as rhetorical devices. Like the purpose etc.
@CoachHallWrites4 жыл бұрын
The choices or devices will help the writer achieve his or her purpose. You should ask yourself why the writer uses that particular choice and how it contributes to the overall purpose of the passage. Definitely incorporate the elements of SOAPSTone or SPACE CAT, but purpose isn’t really a device. The device has a purpose which contributes to the overall purpose of the passage. If you want to work in purpose you can say something to the effect of “in order to” or “doing so allows the writer to...”

Personally, do you think a 5/6 or a 6/6 on the rubric will score a 5 this year?
@CoachHallWrites4 жыл бұрын
It depends on the prompt. A 6/6 would have to be a 5. Not sure if a 5/6 would be a 4 or a 5 composite. They decide that after the reading.

Is it ok to write two body paragraphs if we're only able to find two devices due to the short amount of time?
@CoachHallWrites4 жыл бұрын
Yes! Many students only write two body paragraphs. Just be sure to develop your ideas and thoroughly examine the rhetorical situation. With the time constraints, sometimes 2 body paragraphs is all you can do.
@almond11174 жыл бұрын
@@CoachHallWrites Thank you. My AP teacher always tells us that we must write three body paragraphs. This leads me to be unable to examine the rhetorical situation resulting in a subpar commentary.

Are these sentences frame going to count for plagiarism?
@Stormyshadows4 жыл бұрын
Overall, how would you suggest we format this essay?
@CoachHallWrites4 жыл бұрын
I tend to find that students have a stronger line of reasoning if they offer a chronological analysis. You don’t need a long intro or conclusion. Just make sure you have a defensible thesis. Your body paragraphs are incredibly important. They need to be well-developed. Some students write 2; others write 3. Go for quality, not quantity. The number of body paragraphs you wrote should depend on what you are best capable of in the time given.
@erickcastellanos68144 жыл бұрын
So in both body paragraphs are we supposed to have analyzed at least 5 out of the 6 rhetorical situations, or are we supposed to have analyzed 5/6 per piece of evidence?
@CoachHallWrites4 жыл бұрын
You want to have even commentary throughout your paragraphs, so while you can analyze most of the rhetorical situation for each piece of evidence, that could make your essay feel a bit redundant. It might help to think of it more at the paragraph level as a well to develop your commentary.
