I've worked through the first 30days of the 90 day novel, and amazed at the depth of the story that is unveiled when answering the questions Alan asks. His approach is very different, and by no means restrictive or formulaic - but instead liberating that genius within us that is longing to be revealed.

Absolutely brilliant. This is the most valuable episode I’ve seen. I’m buying his book right now.

The Sherlock Holmes and James Bond explanation was good because it reminded me of Ferris Bueller's Day off, where Ferris' friend, Cameron, was the one who changed, and not Ferris. So the transformation happened through his friend

In terms of screenplay outlining, I started a script in 2012 which I was incubating cool moments for in my head for over a year before writing it, ( that’s not an outline but these were pivotal horror scares and character development moments, ) well I sit down to write, I can’t wait to get to these cool cinematic set pieces, I finish the script 6 weeks later, none of the moments I was looking forward to made it into the script because it just went somewhere else, not super far from where it could have been forced but it would have looked like committee script writing with moments just being dropped into a film cos they were set on it. It wasn’t disappointing because I realized I was listening to the story and where it wanted to go.

People calling the midpoint the "reversal" doesn't make much sense. Apply the idea of something "reversing" to a few of your favourite films and see how well it works. Tenuously at best. My observation is that the midpoint (in more straightforward movies) is often when the protagonist starts the path of tracking the antagonist, culminating with them meeting again (for the first time since the end of act 1) at the end of act II. Midpoint lights the touch paper towards the end of act II.
