I think what I have been told is more effective, you should write the way you naturally express yourself. If you don't normally use big terms or fancy language, your writing will present itself as unnatural and forced. Conversely, if you normally use big words in your everyday expressions, trying to oversimplify your language will also feel forced and unnatural.

While you are correct that style and structure are a crucial element to thesis writing. I believe that a good thesis is heavily underpinned by Mill's method of case selection (most similar/dissimilar). Cheers!
