Depends what you call an airline. If it flies 9 seats like a Cessna Caravan then the pilot may file the flight plan. But US FAA 121 and Foreign FAR 129 airlines have their own dispatch departments that file flight plans. It’s not just flight plans, it’s flight following, coordination with maintenance when system break and can be deferred for repair, etc.

I flew Biman Bangladesh back in 1985 on a DC-10 London to Dhaka, transit for Kathmandu. Return to London was cancelled, and a 12-hour stopover turned into 36 hours. They put us up in a decent hotel and fed us pretty good food, and we got a free day round Dhaka. It was all a kind of delightful chaos, Biman staff were great, and the people of Dhaka were super friendly. It was one of my best ever misadventures.

Your flight may have been stopped at Singapore to drop off an influential politician or businessman. The lack of lights, the police car, the bus waiting, they didn't announce anything, and the excuse of filing the wrong flight plan sounds like a bad excuse. I had something similar like this happen on a flight from Cairo to Sulaymaniyah on Iraqi Airways, and they stopped at Baghdad without saying anything, and someone got off the plane.

I flew Biman back in 1981 from Heathrow to Bangkok on a very old Boeing 707, as soon as the plane took off from LHR, the passengers took out the paraffin stoves from the overhead lockers onto the aisle floor (so the passengers could cook up their grub) which sent the crew scurrying up and down the plane telling everyone not to ignite the cookers, surely the most scariest moment of my life!

I flew Biman airlines from London to KL, return, in the 1980s. My abiding memory was the smell of the plane interior, the food which had no non-spicy option, and included sandwiches with spicy meat in them, and the Dhaka airport. It was set amongst rice fields in those days, and I still remember the plane descending and not seeing any sign of an airport or runaway. Just when I though they were going to land in a rice field, up popped a runaway. The airport in those days consisted of a single building and we waited for a few hours in transit. A fellow passenger said that we should check to see if our suitcase had been offloaded or not as it seemed that it was quite common for them not to. We literally walked out of the transit lounge which had no security at the door, to the back of the building where our luggage had been offloaded. The place was guarded by one security guard dozing on a chair, armed with a WW2 Lee-Enfield rifle. We indicated to him that we wanted to check for our luggage, and he just waved us on, and fell back to dozing. We scrambled around a pile of luggage before finally locating ours, and then went back to the transit lounge. Wonder if it is still like that at Dhaka airport? On the return flight from KL to London, I sat in front of a group of Gurkha recruits, about a dozen or so of them. Didn't think much of them, they were quiet and polite. Next day, I read the news that a group of Gurkha recruits had been caught at Heathrow airport for trying to smuggle drugs into the UK. And yes, they were from my Biman flight :)

Josh. You should have seen the Maslin Lounge in 1999. It literally was a container with an aircon. I didn't risk the food. I asked the one guy running the show for a couple of beers. He returned and handed me a couple of cans of beer. He told me 20 USD. I said, "what". He told me I could afford it as I was flying business. Sorry, you had a bad experience. I love the crew Before the world got silly, I spent time in the jumpseat with some wonderful people. Josh great video as always!! But as an airline pilot ( in Europe) I feel that I have to defend my Bangladesh colleague. Yes he could have made an announcement or two over the pa, BUT, with all likely hood his alternate was Johor Bahru, which is a small regional airport and more than likely was overwhelmed with diverting aircraft that night from Kuala Lumpur due to weather. So more than likely atc requested them to divert to Singapore, which is just a hop away. Now that captain, unless he was in a critical low fuel state, would have agreed. Most likely he would have taken quite a bit of extra fuel from Dhaka due to weather anyway. This means pre pairing , programming the fms and briefing twice for two different arrivals, one of which was most likely unplanned. And short distances between them, coupled with very busy atc due to diversions and Singapore major hub, I can see why a PA would become second matter. At Singapore you were taken to a remote stand, more than likely due to the heavy diversion traffic and because the jet bridges are already pre allocated to scheduled traffic and Singapore being a major hub, most likely all jet bridges were reserved, nothing to do with sending Biman to the most remote parking because it is Biman. Yes once parked on the ground, maybe the pilots could have given some info over the PA, but now starts a whole new story. Do I need fuel? If yes how much? Only until KL. Or all the way back to Dhaka. Is the weather ok now at KL and at the alternate? Is KL open at this time of night ( like European airports that close due to noise, ( probably in Asia they don’t close )), does the crew have enough duty hours to operate a 3 sector duty now, at night when duty hours are more restricting. How long will I have to be on the ground in Singapore until the weather at KL improves, maybe the crew will run out of hours at Singapore or at KL if they get there, requiring hotel accommodation for the crew and the aircraft stranded and out of rotation for the next day. So from experience I know that all this would mean quite a few and hot phone calls between cockpit crew and base and handlers etc. leaving once again the PA in second place. With concern to the wrong flight plan. Airline pilots haven’t filed their flight plans, at least since the 1960s 😄 maybe earlier. Operations does that for you. And have in mind that Biman is not Emirates, Lufthansa, BA or Delta etc, most likely their night shift operations control officers is only 3-4 guys or girs that have to deal with all the above mentioned and maybe not for only this flight, but 3-4 other ones. But in the end you got from A to B safely and that’s all that matters. See you on the next video!!!
@leejacobs3670
@leejacobs3670 Ай бұрын
I couldn't have said this any better myself, being an airline pilot as well. Our SOP for example clearly states the priority list in any emergency or unplanned scenario, and informing the passengers is one of the last items on that list. It even specifies that if your workload is too high, that you can delegate that message to be delivered by the cabin crew instead. I do think that it could have been handled better with some form of communication, but again when involving family members waiting in KL, the airline should have their own ground staff waiting at KL, who can then inform the airport management as to the reason for the diversion/delay, which can then be relayed to anyone waiting on that side. Parking where there's WiFi for passengers to communicate is the least of priorities and not even up to the flight deck crew in any case. You're assigned a parking gate by the Apron office. You have no say in where you park unless you're flying a politic figure etc.

B.A. used to advertise "We'll take more care of you". Biman should have "Get it your bloody self". On most flights I generally thought service would have improved if hijackers took over. Their safety record is actually very good. I have no idea how. I have so many tales about flying Biman because I had a miserly employer, that policy changed when he flew with them. He actually apologised to me, he thought I'd been joking or exaggerating. Never had a bad meal or got ill from the food, they nailed that. I remember the DC-10s galleys used to be crawling with cockroaches. When did it become a dry airline? Used to be able to haggle with the cabin crew over the price of a bottle champagne. Diversions, extra stops and getting grounded at airports was normal and generally accepted without comment. In fact it was expected. A friend swears blind that he was on a Biman flight that had an unexpected stop so the pilot could drop off his father-in-law. Despite the deranged chaos that was the hallmark of Biman I still retain a soft spot for them.

Josh, in fairness, April 1988, I was on a BA flight that spent 6 hours on the ground at BOM, not a word from the flight deck as we waited, waited, waited to continue on to Colombo. Yes, British Airways. Frankly, I was tempted to get off, demand my bags, go into town, enjoy a nice dinner and continue on tomorrow. Eventually, we went - but why the delay?

If the pilot doesn’t admit to a relatively harmless mistake, how would they react if they made a mistake that compromised safety? The lack of transparency would make me hella nervous and question the culture of the organisation.

Great video! Diversions. I have been on GF from BAH to FRA two weeks ago and we were diverted to MUC due to the protesters. We were even served drinks on the ground in MUC. The crew handled the situation very well. Four hours later we finally made it to FRA! Bests from Frank again in Najomtien, Thailand

This flight was on July 11th and you can see on FR24 that starting at around 17:30z there were several diversions at KL airport. So it was definitely a problem at KL (maybe weather?) and not a wrong flightplan. But agree, awful communication by PF/PM.

If you are an unscheduled diversion, you will see police. The general declaration of the flight would be for KL Malaysia, not Singapore. So Singapore Immigration and police would be notified if you divert to a foreign country. The crew would have to disclose armed security on board the aircraft as well. The lack of information can be due to multiple security issues, suspicious passenger, bomb threat or something else. Bomb threats to aircraft will be isolated to a specific location away from the terminal. Sometimes withholding info (even though passengers don’t like it) it prevents chaos and panic because not everyone reacts to news the same way.

Josh is so lucky that everytime he boards a plane, some kind of drama is waiting for him. I have checked BG386 flight status for the past three month and this flight departed on 11 JUL is the only one that was diverted and one of the only two flights that were delayed at arrival for more than 1 hour. Besides Josh's experience, I have to say BG386 is a generally reliable and on-time flight, though certainly the pilots and the company management must have many problems.
