I am a retired 70 yr old mechanic in Land Down Under. If I was ever in trouble in USA, you would be the first person I would see to have work done on my car. That must be why this video was re-edited to hide things I pointed out. (Gotta love changing the zoom to cover up a screw up, etc.) Go back to the Previous Video in this series that that was posted after this one because he spent too much time trying to use a new format of Picture in Picture to hide the real reason the Cover broke. He missed a Bolt and used "More Pry Bar" to break it. Look at those comments. I do call Ray out on it and admit that I have done the same thing when I was new to wrenching. There is no way to prove it; but believe me, my old man knew exactly what I did and I payed for it. I am not ignorant enough to claim that Silicone can break a Timing Cover. (It didn't!) The original version of this video clearly showed him slipping the Timing Cover on with the Drive Gear Backwards with just the Lettering about the Gear being Backwards and had to be flipped. Now the Zoom changes to cover that part up and added more lettering about; "Was not going to re-record." Because he did not want to record the whole tear down process back to the Chain... Video title: Wrong Timing Chain... KZbin link "This Thing" with an angry Emoji. Yeah, he put it together and the Synchronizer would not line up properly. Had to tear it all down again and does not have the dignity to be honest about any part of this disastrous repair. I know damned well things can go bad at any time, and one frustration leads to other issues that escalade to an entire bad experience. For those who don't have a scope handy, you can also find TDC with a pencil in the spark plug hole. Verify compression stroke like Ray did, then stick the pencil in eraser first and use it as a feeler while you rotate the crank. Might be easier to judge by feel than on scope. You can use a long dowel if it's a deep hole, or even a screwdriver (careful not to scratch anything).

Most of the time a leak in the timing cover gasket is the result from tightening the oil pan bolts first. And in some sad cases the crankshaft front seal also fails prematurely from the timing cover not seating flushed to the block because of the tension was firstly applied to the oil pan bolts causing misalignment.

Another old school trick to find compression stroke. Tear off a piece of paper towel, wad it up, and stuff it in the spark plug hole. Bump the engine over with the ignition switch or a bump starter. The paper towel will blow out as the piston comes up on compression stroke. Then you can use a Phillips screwdriver to bring the piston on up. If you go too far and the piston has started back down, you can turn the engine backwards to top dead center or stuff the paper back in and start over with the bumping. I know. Shade tree technology. But it works.

Car is now up to 278k and gets oil changed religiously. I do hope to keep the car itself to 300k and the engine to its respective miles. Recently got a tuner on discount for it and plan on giving it a mild tune once i get an exhaust for it, already have CAI similar to the one this guy has. Drove it for work that is a personal vehicle travel job about 200+ miles a day for 4 months until i purchased another vehicle for just such that. Nice to see that ford recall kit 20 years ago still didn’t fix the timing cover gasket leaks. Don’t worry about that timing cover breakage. I broke a few of them in the past. They all break at that spot. There is a tool to align that camshaft synchronizer. FYI there are several variants of them. That egr tube is 1 1/16 inch. Tech tip remove all those studs before you remove the cover. Makes installing and removing easier

Good job. Time consuming enough to know I wouldn't want to do it. Painting the parts was a nice touch.

If it makes it to the next oil change without it wiping out the bottom end congratulations. The relief valve in those built in oil pumps on the front cover love to stick after the are removed and reinstalled. The cam sensor is not for ignition timing. It is for sequential fuel injection timing. If it is off you will not get much of any symptom except for perhaps a stumble at low speed or poor fuel economy. Also it will miss identify a cylinder misfire to apposing cylinder firing on the coil pack.

Watching you set the timing reminded me of replacing my distributor on my 1969 Camaro back in the 80's .
