So for giggles.. Knowing that you are not using thrusters and some recon would be helpful.. Do you recall the survival episode you were flinging crap over the canyon with pistons.. Could you build a small battery with a camera, parachute, gyro, remote and antenna.. Fling the mess near vertically and see what might be revealed? Seems ridiculously complex enough 🤓

For a UPS Splitsie, you can do what I did and build your own with Lithium batteries. I built a battery pack using 18650 batteries, hooked it up to a charge controller, then added an inverter out the back. By doing this, I have loads more power available without spending a tremendous amount of money. I can run my 2 20a 120v circuits that are hooked to it for more than 3 hours, and I didn't have to spend near the money I would have spent to buy a prebuilt one. Mine is also fully upgradeable in that I can add more batteries, add another inverter, add more charging, basically whatever I want without rebuilding it.

Still getting caught up, enjoying the journey. But here I am, about 3 hours into this one, and everyone's thinking of zip lines and wing suits and grappling hooks, Splitsie's here wanting simple daylight sensors. I'll second that, lol. Like a timer for automatically switching from solars recharging batteries to discharging or switching to reactors. With some work, one could set up drones that only attack at night as well.

In the distant future, on a distant world, Engineer Splitsie was asked to dig a trench . . . . . . . What followed caused a rift in the space time continuum, consumed 3 mountain ranges, took 9 years to accomplish and ruined the lives of many an engineer, left crying in the corner and whispering " A spade, it should have taken a spade . . . . . . . NO PISTONS . . . .NO PISTONS PLEASE GOD, NO MORE PISTONS!!!" . . . .

I was intrigued by the challenge so I built a 3 part articulated vehicle, 12 wheels total. First attempt I only articulated on one axis and it didn't make it to the top of the nearest everest. Second attempt I articulated on two axis and it made it to the top of the mountain but, at a fairly bare bones 180 tonnes, it took ages and struggled in a lot of spots. Maybe articulating on all three axis would improve it but it's hard to say. I'm looking forward to seeing what solution you come up with because... there will always be more mountains.
@jaymiddleton772
@jaymiddleton772 5 жыл бұрын
Had another crack this morning. 2 sections, each with 4 lines of 4 3x3 wheels. The front section with 2 extra wheels raised up slightly the way wasted does on General Bee. 3 axis articulation and it scaled the mountain much easier. Bare bones weight 179 tonnes. Gonna add a 3rd section but I have some IRL stuff to do :(

1:42:00 You like blowing stuff up so much, your name could be Splodesie. Too bad(?) Caboompac was around for the second wave. 1:46:00 With enough rotors and pistons, building a transforming vehicle could be a thing. Rover to walker, walker to flier... Would be closer to a Valkyrie from Macross. 1:48:30 Capac basically built a scrap metal dick. Wangus Prime? 1:53:00 One idea I've used with some ground vehicles: Build an actual ramp with light armor blocks, make it as flat as you can so you don't need a lot of horsepower to climb it. I know, for a vehicle this large it would take hours to build, but if done right it would avoid any of the usual dangers of driving up a mountain. 1:58:00 A quite literal "two steps forwards, one step back" plan.
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 5 жыл бұрын
I'm not big on avoiding the dangers, especially if it's in a stream and the avoiding leads to repetitive stuff - that's why we wouldn't drill through or bridge over too much stuff :)

I had to skip the ship blowing up. Knowing HOW MUCH valuable salvage you were wasting physically hurt me. I get the reasons but why man, man? Sitting for the whole thing at once isnt plausible lol
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 5 жыл бұрын
It's largely because the moment you salvage a ship like that it completely removes any and all resource challenges from your game. I knew there were reactors on board and other things that mean we'd not have to worry about power, we'd not have to deal with complicated mining rigs and other things that are fun challenges to have to face. So basically it would remove a huge amount of potential drama from these streams which would potentially make them much, much less interesting to watch and make

I am surprised that you did not think of the "Trike Bike" concept. Where the two front wheels are in the center of the front and on the end of two large forks connected to the frame by rotors, much like a "Chopper" (motor cycle). That would make sure that all of the wheels are making contact with the terrain at all times. Then add a second set of wheels to the rear of the vehicle, if more moving power is needed.i.pinimg.com/originals/55/a6/e9/55a6e986b8ba84ee17f4aeb1b58db9bb.jpg

I don't think Wasted's design is going to work. Or rather, it's will be unnecessarily complex to build and operate. But this gives me some ideas for another experiment with free-tilting bogies that I shall try. I haven't had much luck improving upon the Raven-318 prototype mk.2 (steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1796299006; you saw the mk1), but now I have hope again.
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's hard to find that right balance between complexity and flexibility - too complex and it's just as likely to fall apart as to function, too simple and it won't be able to adapt enough. I really do wish I'd started with a design that could more easily be turned into something like yours since it would be fun to build something like that

1). I left a wheel design for better traction on discord, anyone able to test it? 2). Anyone want a layer map of Splitsie's Travels? You could reconstruct a rough 3D from that. I did one similar for Hawaii, looks spiffy. I don't have rotation and scale animator anymore, so no fly-throughs, but if anyone wants, I can post the layers and how-to. Small details like the wash out ravines wont show, but you could recognize path side by side video. I might even be able to show tree zones, ice definitely. 3). CAPAC ASSAULTED WITH BATTERY! OW! That's similar to my original idea for upgrading the wheel layout on the large grid rover. It works so well on small grid, but the worry was that on large grid it would be so large that the terrain would rarely be flat enough for most of the wheels to be in contact :/

Love this stream but have to say less is more. Your rover is to big and complicated. Playing a game now started nere a pole. Built a large grid rover 4 5x5 wheels, 2 h2o generators, hydrogen tank, 4 small cargo containers, and 2 batteries. Filled everything with hydrogen and ice. Went over similar terrain as you and made 80 kilometers in 4hrs. Your vehicle is just so much bigger and heavier.
