Great driver, realized that there was more grip wide of the apex than close, used that to his advantage and passed the whole field.

yes, because on the perfect line there's a lot of rubber and the asphalt is blasted flat, that's great for dry racing but in the wet, outside the race line you'll be faster, because the asphalt is still rough so you have grip in the wet and the water can drain a bit at least
