Good old WSBT Channel 22! Brings back memories of when we lived in South Bend. I even remember when the Big Orange cars came all the way downtown to Michigan and LaSalle.

@8avexp: Hopefully the line will get expanded back into Downtown South Bend eventually.

And for the region as a whole with more incentive to take the train than drive. Big congrats to the South Shore not only being the last surviving interurban in the US, but one that is expanding.

No more street running trains

yeah, it's sad, but having lived in Chicago they've been screaming for years for more frequent and faster service. Street running had only one track through town and was required to stop at traffic lights, and could only go at slow speeds. By having it not street running anymore, it's double tracks to the east end of Michigan City and will have much faster speeds. There will also be gates at street crossings so the train wont' be hampered by street lights. it's been needed for years since people just weren't able work their schedule well with the limited service due to the single track issue. Now it's pretty much double tracks from Michigan City west most of the way to Chicago. They also built a separate bridge for the commuter line where there was bridge over the road but then they had to cross over a triple track freight line at the edge of a busy rail yard.

Why build a 6 story parking garage???? Why not just build another apartment block???

Supports mixed mode commuting for the surrounding area. Likely not dense enough to cover with bus routes, so gives a place to park & ride.

@@jonathanbott87 that’s fair, but I still don’t see the need for a 6 story parking garage, that seems a bit extreme

Is the train from downtown Chicago to South Bend running, or what?

Yes, the line is running, and the bus substitution has ended with new, full double tracking.

You will not live to see the station moved to downtown South Bend. By that I mean… in the next 20 - 30 years. The only logical place it needs to be is downtown. The move to the airport (east side) was termed a temporary move. That was more than 25 years ago! This, in terms of how South Bend city government operates… IS a temporary move. Administration s change every election cycle and nothing happens. If the station EVER moves from the east side of the airport to the west… that is where it will remain permanently. And neither NICTD nor the FEDs have ANY funding to move anything in South Bend at this time. This is what you call a pipe dream.

A fast, frequent, electrified rail line can move way more people than any highway ever could. It's not hitting capacity yet with the frequency of trains they run, but this project is a huge upgrade that will allow them to better utilize the existing infrastructure in addition to the new tracks. Also, rail-oriented development is much more financially solvent than car-oriented development because it has more efficient and productive land use. We really need more projects like this across the country so everywhere in America can have passenger rail service like this. We had it a century ago, and just about everywhere else in the world still has it now, so we need to stop being exceptionally bad at it.

Thats basically every rural road and highway ever but you don't complain. Meanwhile this is electric and high capacity keeping thousands of cars off of the roads
