Truly I want to know who was the genius that thinks we'll gladly pay for upgrades as a service? It either comes with it or not. Otherwise it's a one time payment for it and done. I can see the day especially with GM saying "Oh you want AC, no problem this is the monthly fee.... Wait where are you going?"

As soon as I heard about this I knew what was up, subscriptions for every car feature and various levels of feature subscriptions! The reason for CarPlay and android auto integration is for consumers to be able to use the device they use the most on a daily basis as seamlessly as possible without having to setup and configure another separate device and extra costs to the consumer! This has gone out the window and opens up a can of costly wormy worms for the consumer. I won’t be buying any GM vehicle or other brands if they don’t support CarPlay or android auto period!

I hate the idea of paying for something that is in the car- heated heats… I don’t mind it for navigation because that had to be updated. Our 2012 Lexus needs new disks for the nav because it is very outdated.

No one will buy a car to own in the future, why would you put money to buy car and pay subscription fee every month over it just to drive you from point a to b. Taxis will be way cheaper as you are just paying to get driven from a to b without buying the car

I mean they already make a lot of money off the sales. The subscription base model will cause people to go to Ford and Toyota. Not that I care because I have a 2019 Ford Escape. But the idea is dumb. It's also why I don't like full touch screens for everything in cars. The radio, I don't mind. But with putting the heating and AC on there to that's just a no for me.

I would pay an extra $20-35 a month for my Tesla for them to add CarPlay. That's how important it is to me. I wish I didn't need to... but I would. Car Manufacturers shouldn't be abandoning the best innovation in vehicle technology... period. They'll never be able to compete. There's already carplay and android auto compatible apps that people have paid for, and car manufacturers are now thinking they're gonna be profitable by making developers re-build their apps on their proprietary platforms and making consumers re-purchase them within the car ecosystem? bullshit. it won't work. and I'll boycott anybody that thinks otherwise (except Tesla, bc FSD Beta is fun as hell and at least a worthwhile software feature for the lacking of carplay)

I don't subscribe to the industry's newly found subscription model and I don't think it is the silver bullet it's touting. Imagine PC or mobile manufacturers doing the same? Charging a monthly fee to use the on-board graphic card or the camera? Cars are expensive assets that last 20 years+. Having emissions generated to produce built-in hardware that can't be utilised without a monthly fee sounds greedy and wasteful. My suspicion is that legislators will be forced to regulate the industry if consumers don't do it first.
