Actually using drones makes so much sense. They are like infinitely cheaper than Javelins and just as deadly making them the ultimate weapons.
@robertstenn1350
@robertstenn1350 Жыл бұрын
@@henryg3313 Yes a Javelin works differently than drones and has advantages like being fire and forget (the operator only needs to lock on, launch the missile and its guidance handles the rest) as well as a sophisticated tandem warhead that will defeat Russian explosive reactive armor. That said FPV drones are extremely cheap in comparison to a Javelin and have a ton of versatility.

The problem is that civilians don't have the same protection as regular soldiers do, if they use lethal weapons. They're not considered soldiers and won't get prisoner of war privileges. They also loose their civilian privileges in war. Not that the Russians have cared so far though... Either way, it's highly risky as a civilian to take up arms, more so than soldiers. Even though I'm sure many would want to.

The same is said about the converse, though. Iranian-made Shahed-136 drones cost about $20,000 to make, but it takes Ukraine about $500,000 to shoot each one down (they're using NASAMS short- to midrange air defense missiles). Long story short, BOTH sides are having a big drone problem, but Ukraine is unfortunately receiving the brunt of it, due to the Iranian made ones being sent to Russia in huge quantities.

@@BayuAH In some instances, the cheaper units are more difficult to destroy, simply because the weapons capable of reasonably being used against them just weren't meant for that purpose. Like, a small recon drone. If it's high up, it's going to be extremely difficult to hit it with small arms, so the only thing that can reasonably expect to take it down is probably a missile. But that missile was designed to strike much larger targets like helicopters or manned fixed-wing aircraft, so they're a lot more likely to fail against a smaller, cheaper target.

@@akshittripathi5403Lancet is decent but They're not doing that much more work than fpvs. Also because of the distance it operates at the lancet has a lower kill percentage. I mean, this war seems very much to be a trial and error by offensive forces. Where attrition or surprise allows movement in certain areas. Surprise is what allowed the initial Russian advances, so too the Kharkiv counteroffensive by Ukraine. Simultaneously, attrition led to Russian victories at Severnodonestk and Soledar, and in Ukraines case taking back Kherson. What these drones seem to do, and we do have visual evidence for this, is make it to where tanks can not only be spotted and attacked by kamikaze drones, but gain visual or laser identification for other drones in the air, like lanclets do, or give artillery the means to target them. Like how Russia's armored columns last winter were halted in Vuhledar and Kreminna, and so too Ukranian columns in the south. So like, pointing out an "oooo, gotcha" to the use of similar Russian advancements in this field begets the effective use these drones have time and time again proven they have against both sides offensive forces. Whether it be for distraction, getting lucky hits in, or overwhelming the force that's attacking with too much at once, let alone the damage these weapons do to infantry, these drones have proven their effectiveness, and use, so far, in spite of their small warhead capacity. What will be interesting will be how one side, or the other, overcomes this new breed of weapon. Or, perhaps, this is just a sign of technology/use of technology outpacing tactics and weapons to break a stalemate. Akin to WW1, in a way.
@Nanobrker
@Nanobrker Жыл бұрын
@@josephhernandez5386 you need to READ the comment carefully and what it pointed to CAREFULLY before typing this looong diatribe. Also, vuhledar was halted but the equipment not destroyed and later recovered (judging by the full video and bit edited down clip spread by ukr mod). Kreminna offensive is difficult for armour because of the vast forest belt, and ground troops having perfect cover for air recon. It's not "haulted" . In fact RF pushed back any and all ukr offensive in that area to its initial position and has gained ground in the forest regions in recent months. RF didn't have any proper air defence (short and medium) in place in South and had vast gaps in radar coverage last year. A problem they have since solved and their EW equipment has been successfully jamming and intercepting smart bombs, drones and missiles so much so that even western analysts and generals have begun whining about how ineffective their weapons have become against RF EW. Russian air defences regularly shoot down ukr drones venturing too far into the frontline..... Yes you hear news of ukr sending drones into Russian territory for PR and distraction from their astronomical losses on frontlines, but how often are those drones ACTUALLY successful???? Not many ..... Once in a week or 2 weeks maybe. Meanwhile RF drones and missiles regularly strike all the way to the lviv region. Drones have changed the battlefield for sure, especially immediate frontline surveillance against the infantry but the roots of warfare tactics still hold.....trench and artillery warfare still reigns supreme as is evident, air superiority still matters and decent air defence is still important. Drones have merely augmented these aspects and added to their effectiveness.

I live in Bulgaria - yesterday I had an avert for a $10,000 drone that can carry a 15kg payload for 10 hours, its controlled via satellite [presumably starlink]. That means I could load it with bombs, fly it to Ukraine, bomb a tank and fly it home again called a "YANGDA Sky Whale Max Hybrid Heavy Lift Long Endurance VTOL Drone" The point I am making is - the whole shape of war has changed. Me a random guy with $10k can secretly take part in a war in another country. That is crazy.

I dont remember the exact number but I read that Russia already invests something like $3 billion in drone manufacturing and is currently building a factory in Russia to mass produce the iranian Shahed drones. Ukraine recently announced to invest around $1.08 billion into drones. Ukraine is a poor country but I think they still have to prioritize this issue. Im worried $1 billion isnt enough. Id like to see Ukraine invest at least as much as Russia into drones. Drones will be a major factor in this war and the side with more and better drones will have an advantage. And to all Ukraine supporters: Prioritize donating to groups and units that focuse on drones. Thats what I do. Yes humanitarian aid and conventional weapons etc are important too but drones are in my opinion the most important issue in this war.

@@BJJISTHEGAYPARTOFMMA One of the reason Ukraine has a high armor attrition rate when breaching Russian defense lines is because NATO doctrines for breaching dates from the 1980’s and the Gulf War. Back then, NATO teachings expected 25 minutes from the moment a field was breached to the moment counter-battery arrived. Yet, with the advent of both reconnaissance and loiter drones, that timeframe is non-existent, and it is genuinely putting a drag on Ukraine, and Western nations too. These drones are revolutionary.

I'm going to call it, next 5 years we're going to see the US Military doing a 'hand held drone operator' MOS. The ability to have a squad mate pop up a drone, to scout ahead in real time, and get a birds eye view of enemy fortifications before a push is going to be insane. Imagine you're working on some offensive, and you have direct callout on radio of a $50 dollar drone telling you where the enemy is, how many of them, blah blah blah. Reaper drones no longer need to play surveillance for operations, and can purely build into support. Squad level tactics can even use grenade drones to drop explosives on enemies, or even smokes to disrupt their vision. When I enlist in the US army next week. It's going to be the #1 thing I'm interested in if it becomes a thing. I'll reclass in an instant if I can do that kind of stuff.

A lucky hit might take out a track or something, but not with any reliability. Calling them the equivalent of a Javelin like some of the commenters just shows ignorance. A serious use for drones is forward artillery spotting. Some of the Howitzer smart rounds are GPS guided and I'd bet drones can determine and relay back GPS target positions.

For people wondering how tanks and armored vehicles will ever overcome the small drone threat, which is a great question, first thing to keep in mind that predicting the future of war is by far the hardest possible thing to do. That’s because the smartest people, of each nation, spend trillions of dollars to best give them the advantage in a future war. Whether it’s Georgia, Indonesia or the United States; top talent spends all its time thinking about this and is a top priority of the government. Secondly, there is already a solution to this threat coming out of the United States. Lasers. Essentially, lasers have gotten to the point that realistically in a few more years a laser could be installed on every tank, armored vehicle, etc. The lasers are already good to go - just not in mass adoption. I think the real question is “Will lasers get to the point that anti tank missiles, drones and even tank projectiles themselves could be stopped by them?” They are already on the verge of stopping artillery shells for example.

it's not that big of a question. as the drones operate via radio signal, they just have to jam it. a piece of kit as big as a modem could do it effectively. the thing is tho, that it just won't happen. both putin and his generals are braindead and rigid. they can threaten with nukes, but they can't adapt. russia is not prepared for modern warfare, and with all the embargoes i doubt they could get all the chips and semi conductors necessary to mass produce the required equipment, even tho it isn't a big deal at all. putin and the russian military are both had beens.
