I had my tips returned on two occasions-once at a restaurant in Japan and once at a spa in China. In both cases, I was politely informed that their employers provide adequate wages and that tipping is considered rude and insulting to their organization. This is quite different from practices in Canada or the U.S., where tipping is more common. In reality, the approach of ensuring proper wages through tipping is relatively rare on the global stage.

And using using tips to cover the minimum wage is an abuse, all workers should be paid minimum wage and the tips are supposed to be an extra. Other benefits are calculated on the total earned income reported. What will Social Security retirement benefits be if tips are excluded from taxable income (assuming SS continues as is)? I used to represent injured workers whose benefits were denied on claims--food service being among the most common working class to be injured. If you can't work due to injury, wage replacement is paid at a % of your reported wages. Clients would often be angry that their tips were higher than they had reported to the state or IRS, and they depended on them to pay their monthly bills. Can't have it both ways: if you didn't report the income, your benefits don't consider the earnings. So--if your taxable income is only a couple of dollars--what can be expected to be paid out in L&I 😮benefits to tide you over while you recover from your injury? For my state it was 60% for single, 65% for married and 2% extra for up to five dependents. I have a hard time believing it would be a percentage off the $1500 per month you earned in "untaxed" tips. Haven't seen this part of the argument presented anywhere yet or off what amount you'd be paying into Social Security either.

Why tipping should be outlawed: Casino workers are paid server wages and get most of their income from tips. CASINO workers. Casinos that make millions of dollars in profit every day will not pay workers a wage. That means tips are an extra cost on people who pay and extra profit for companies.

Tipped workers already make same as hourly workers because employers are required to make up any difference, period. You are the one who doesn't understand. I own a few restaurants and am very familiar with how much tipped workers make. In fact, the "busy" restaurants (think your local packed steakhouses) their tipped workers most likely make more than you assuming you work a typical non-tipped job. There are waiters bringing home 7-8K a month pre-tax. People talking about tipped culture also need to realize this is very much a macro problem, not something any individuals can fix. Even people in the industry have to go with the flow. If all your competitors are asking for tips (say you're starbucks) you have to do the same or your workers will say why is dunkin donut workers getting tips but not them?
@adamriekert1984
@adamriekert1984 12 күн бұрын
@@dailyrant4068 the average salary for servers is 20-31k BEFORE TAX. The video showed tipped workers making around that much, so just above the no-tax threshold and just below a decent income. Your 5k+/wk is either top earners, fanciful thinking, or an above-average week. The stats don't show servers and bartenders making above 50k, unless crazy outliers. If I tip one of your workers, then it is more likely you won't have to pay to cover the difference below minimum. You should be for this! And as a consumer, if I don't think there should be a tip, I won't tip, so tax-free won't even matter! If you are worried about servers leaving, then tax-free is just an incentive for more people to get into the work. It is difficult, exhausting work, so they should get more than 25k. And gig workers like Uber and UberEats drivers absolutely need all their tips!!
