I know this song will always be associated with Pretty Woman, but it actually predates that movie and is, as one critic called it, a ‘masterpiece of pain’. One of so many masterpieces Roxette crafted. For me, it’s one of the most beautiful and powerful songs ever written and a reminder that, just as music can reach out and connect us with others, so it can also reach within and penetrate to the deepest parts of ourselves. Thanks, Strawberry Princess for suggesting this song and thanks, everyone who voted for it. And thanks, Mike and Joe and EVERYONE who made this epic week happen.

RIP Marie.

Funny how you talked about how the industry found some good voices and then sort of made some great music... Per and Marie did very much make their own carriers and their own music already in the 80's. Per created his own "industry" by knowing the pop culture inside out and building from what he learned, and Marie had already her own success as a singer songwriter when she joined forces with Per. That Denniz Pop and Max Martin era of "producers first" and then add some pretty faces/tolerable voices came later. But it is a beatiful thing to behold how every person listening to Marie falls in love with her on the spot! 😆

I was really so sad when Marie passed away a few years ago, far too early after several years of struggling with brain tumor. She was really an amazing singer, both the songs she did with Roxette and her solo's in Swedish. RIP Marie 😢❤

This song was actually first released in 1986 as 'Christmas for the Broken Hearted'. Then they became big in 89 with hits like "The Look", Dressed for Success", "Dangerous", and of course Listen To Your Heart", at which time they were asked to release a song for the Pretty Woman Movie. They were to busy so they changed one word. Its a hard Christmas Day became a Hard Winters Day and there you have it the song became bigger and a hit on second release.:)

Your comment about artists and music producers is very interesting in this particular video, because this band managed to achieve international fame, starting in the States but even without having a record deal in the States. An exchange student brought Roxette's (swedish press) vinyl from Sweden to Minneapolis, and there, a local radio station programmer loved the cover album and decided to play the track number 1, thern is where the band's international success began. In my country (Argentina) they are a big name as Lady Gaga, Madonna, or Michael Jackson.

The original song was a Christmas song and premiered in 1987. They just changed the lyrics a bit so they could use it in Pretty Woman. They changed "Christmas Night" to "Winter Night" or something like that. So the production is from 1987.

I am not at all embarrassed to admit that "Pretty Woman" is still one of those movies that is a guilty pleasure for me. It's the wholesome story of a young woman who offers driving lessons to help pay rent, then meets her future husband who had trouble driving a manual transmission. This song by Roxette was the icing on the wedding cake.😂

It was originally written as a Christmas song for EMI Germany and 3 years later when the movie production team for pretty woman asked them to write a song, Gessle sent “the old” it must have been love since the movie wasn’t expected to become as big as it did

Yes Per wrote this around 87-88 if I remember it correctly. Actually as a christmas sing, but I recall something about someone at the label, didn't think it was suitable for the German-market, so Per kept it, changed the lyrics and made this.😊

4:07 You are correct. "Pretty Woman" was released in mid-1990 and it was such a big hit back then.

This song was written in 1987 for the German market, but the German executives didn't like it. But it was a success during Christmas of 1987 in Sweden. Then 1990, the director of the film Pretty Woman asked Roxette to write a song for his movie. But Roxette didn't have time. So, it was changed the musical reference to Christmas and Marie sang "Winter's day" intead "Christmas' Day" and the rest is history.

Marie Fredriksson was one of Sweden's best singers ever. I don't, however, think this song is written specially for the film. Per Gessle (the dude with the guitar) is one of Sweden's most successful song writers and he's rich as a troll (Swedish idiom).
@iammotanzАй бұрын
"No sé si es amor, pero lo parece" Roxette was HUGE in Latin America, they even released a Spanish version of the song, and many others I reckon. It was so cool back then when artists used to record songs in various languages.

Roxette were a 'super group' in a way. Per Gessle was the lead singer in a hugely successful band in the 80's and Marie Fredriksson had her own stardom as a singer songwriter. Both sang in Swedish in their respective careers. Then Per wanted to launch an international career - and felt that he needed a better singer (than he was): enter Marie. They both grew up in the same small town, incidentally, so they had known each other for years. Aaand: Magic! Marie is a national treasure. (R.I.P.) I believe she sang at crown princess Victoria's wedding, all while battling brain cancer. Dammit.

Gary Marshall really wanted a song from Roxette for the Movie, however Roxette where too busy with a world tour to write a new song. Per presented him with the original christmas version of this song from 86/87, with a small lyric change. Gary liked it so much that he made sure rhat there was no dialogue in the scene where he included the song. That bridge and the Piano swooping in is amazing, its the section of the song i really wait for. There are Lots of Fantastic songs from Roxette. Its worth looking outside of the usuall hits aswell though. For example: "Soul Deep"( esp live), "Hotblooded", "The Rain" "do you get(excited)" And many more 😊

@jankaveronАй бұрын
When you talk about them getting great songs written for movies back then… the irony is that this song had already been released in 1987 as a Christmas song in Sweden. They changed one lyric and had someone remix it slightly. But the band’s longtime Swedish Producer actually produced this song. Roxette were too busy when asked to record a song for this film so gave them this… another US number 1 for them and the rest is history ha. Anyone interested in hearing the (mostly the same) original should look up “It Must Have Been Love (Christmas for the Broken Hearted)”
