No the reason it was called El Chavo del 8 was because that was the channel it came on back in the day. He was a homeless orphan, which was why you never saw his parents and also why the others would chase him down to give him a bath when he got too dirty.

Yeah, but it was also about the other kids, who were also orphans. The Chilindrina and Ñoño had lost their mother (although I'm not so sure about Ñoño's mother) and Quico had lost his father. They were really all orphans.

To the people saying only El Chavo was an orphan, all the other main kids in the show had only one living parent, making them partially orphans, and eventually Chilindrina became a full orphan when Ramón Valdés died and his character dissapeared from the show. I didn't knew about that ending, I don't think it would've push children to suicide, it just would have been a downer ending (I'm glad they didn't do it because I wouldn't want Chavito to die!).

I think this facts are wrong. My parents have been strong fans of Chespirito and there are some facts that are a little bit out of place. The most obvious one; not all the kids in the show were orphans. The only orphan was El Chavo who lived in a barrel. Chilindrina was Don Ramón's daughter, Quico was Doña Florinda's son and Ñoño was El Señor Barriga's son, but both characters were played by the same actor. In addition, as far as I know, Chespirito took his name from Charles Chaplin because he admired him a lot, this is why all his character's started with the letters CH, like Chapulín Colorado, El Chavo, and some others I don't remember well .-.

It is well known here in Mexico that Roberto Gómez was a fan of Chaplin, but Chespirito comes from Shakespeare in diminutive, "shakespierito", the way many of his friends liked to called him because of his talent to write. And el Chavo didn't lived in the barrel, he lived in the apartment number 8 with a good and unknowkn samaritan neighbor who cared for him, the barrel was just a hide out/play house for him. And that's why the show is named "El Chavo del 8".

+Andrea Paola Right on the first account, only El Chavo was an orphan, but most (if not all) of the rest of the kids were missing one of their parents. In some places of Mexico people say "huérfano de padre" or "huérfano de madre" when a child is missing either one of their parents, but you are right, I doubt that's what they meant. On the second account though, "Chespirito" does come from the word little Shakespeare or "Shakespearito", I saw Roberto Gomez Bolaños himself admit to that in several documentraries. Also, the fact that his characters' names begin with CH was a coincidence at first, he noticed this, and made it a trade after that (Chavo, Chapulin, Chaparrón, Chómpiras, Dr. Chapatín, etc, along with with his trademark phrase "Chanfle!!!").

+Aluccard Cuevas As a matter of fact, the name El Chavo del 8 is because originally the show would be broadcasted on T.V. channel 8, which was later acquired by what today is Televisa. The name had already stuck with the audience, even though the show was no longer transmitted on channel 8, so to cover up the fact they made up the story that he lived in apartment 8. El Chavo himself (on the show) would claim not to live inside the barrel, however he was seen on multiple ocassions spending the night in it. It was a running gag for El Chavo to always get interrupted whenever he would explain who he lived with in apartment 8 (also when he would try to reveal his first name, "El Chavo" being just a nickname).
