WTF Happened to JOSH HARTNETT?

Josh Hartnett was the biggest heartthrob of the late nineties. Bursting onto the scene in Robert Rodriguez's The Faculty, his status was reaffirmed by Halloween H20 and Sofia Coppola's The Virgin Suicides. However, his career hit its stride in the early 2000s when he became a leading man in movies like Michael Bay's Pearl Harbor, Ridley Scott's Black Hawk Down and more. Yet, towards the middle of the decade, his career started to cool after a string of flops. He disappeared from the scene for a few years, only to return in the cult series Penny Dreadful. Recently, he's seemed on the cusp of a significant comeback following a scene-stealing turn in Guy Ritchie's Wrath of Man, with him set to star in the follow-up, Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre, while he's also in Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer. Join us in this episode of WTF Happened to this Celebrity as we dig into his surprisingly epic career.

This is an easy one - he walked away. I don't think we can blame anyone for not wanting to be mega famous in the early 2000s - it was a terrible time for those people. He saw other famous actors having their lives ruined and said "nope". He turned down by Batman and Superman, which would have paid him $100 million. Interesting career.

I feel like Josh Hartnett's career is a testament to diversifying really early on. If he had done more indie stuff and spaced out the big budget ones he could have dodged the pressure and pipeline that so many good looking actors are stuffed into that burn them out ultimately. I'm glad to hear he's still doing what he loves and on his terms. That's what all actors want in the end, imo. The Faculty and 30 Days of Night are my faves of his, the ones that felt in his wheelhouse. Thanks for another one! 😉👌

Surprised at how much this video undersells the pop culture impact of Pearl Harbor. That was the most coveted role in Hollywood and Hartnett was basically crowned the biggest young actor in Hollywood when he won it. The movie was one of the most anticipated films of all time when it opened - it was 3rd highest opener ever and would have challenged the opening weekend record had it had a normal release (it was released over a Holiday against heavy competition). Affleck/Bays' reputations absorbed nearly all the hate towards the film while Josh Hartnett's popularity blew up. Pearl Harbor made Josh Hartnett an overnight superstar who was more in-demand than his costar Ben Affleck for most of 2002 onwards. Nobody was offering Ben Affleck $100 million to be Batman or Superman.

He is a successful actor who is still successful. That sounds about right. I mean I get the point of this video. I am 31 so I remember him and I always thought he was amazing and I was very surprised when he kind of disappeared. But now as an adult, I think he is one of the lucky ones who really knew who he was and didn't try to force himself into shitty positions. It takes a strong character to turn away from greed to follow your passion. Josh Hartnett seems like he will continue to be successful in life and I am proud of him on a human level for that.

Happy for this guy, I don't blame him for turning down a lot of big roles because some of those were a real big gamble at the time. I honestly would have thought he would go up at the level as Ben Affleck did. I think it's great he didn't force himself to keep making movies he doesn't believe in.

To answer the question - Batman Begins make a lot more money with Josh Hartnett in the leading role simply because he was much more popular than Christian Bale at the time. The Superman role he turned down was for an unmade film written by JJ Abrams which was much more commercial Superman Return. It would have probably been a big hit too.
