WTF Happened to Max Headroom? (1987)

One of the oddest pop culture favourites of the eighties has to have been Max Headroom. Played by Matt Frewer, Max Headroom was supposed to be a computer-generated, wisecracking being of pure television. In reality, it was Frewer in a mask, shown against a crazy background, that made him look computer animated - at least by eighties standards. The character made his debut in a British short film called Max Headroom: 20 Minutes into the Future. It was a massive hit in Britain, and Max became an unlikely star, with him hosting music video countdown shows and chat programs in the UK.
Eventually, the idea was hatched to spin Max off into a legit, live-action TV show. The short film was essentially remade for American TV, with Matt Frewer and co-star Amanda Pays recreating their roles. The result show was a big enough hit to get a second season, but it was cancelled due to heavy competition for hit shows such as Miami Vice. Yet, the show remains a cult classic, and indeed, it’s a brilliant program for its era. Join us on this episode of Gone But Not Forgotten as we examine this cult hit.
This episode is written by Jessica Dwyer, narrated by Travis Hopson, and edited by Michael Robenault. David Arroyo is the producer. Watch previous episodes below and let us know in the comments if you remember Max Headroom!

Same, it played in Austria often close to midnight. I was obsessed with everything computer related and/or science fiction back then but I often missed it cause it was way past bedtime for me (but I often tried). We didn't have a VHS recorder yet and I haven't seen it since then, my only memory from that is the Max Headroom character itself and that I always were super tired, everything else faded away. So this was actually interesting to get to know what the show was actually about. ^^

UK Max Headroom was one of my favourite shows as a teen. Much preferred the video-jockey series over the narrative and interview shows. Frewers monologues were so random yet entertaining due to Frewer's natural charm. I loved all his outfits too. Matt Frewer was awesome in the remake of Dawn Of The Dead (2004). Where as your ideas of a re-born Max Headroom taking on the horrid corporate media machine is totally awesome, it would only happen independently. No KZbin, NETFLIX or HULU would ever green light something that would fight against the narrative.

Thanks for this - I LOVED MAX -- SO far ahead of its time in so many ways. And thanks for the shout-out about Matt's career -- and PSI FACTOR. I wrote several episodes of the series and Matt was a dream to work with --- and so much fun. Peter Aykroyd was involved with the first season and had very little to do with it after that. More importantly, his brother Dan our exec producer as well as our Serling-like host for the intro and tag for every episode. Dan was also involved creatively through the show's 88-episode run -- more than Peter was. Matt didn't join the show until the second season (when I did as well) We did some crazy shit! Look for it on KZbin -- most of it is here.

Just so you know, the reason the signal interruption lasted longer on WTTW (Channel 11) than on WGN (Channel 9) was because the transmission signal for WGN was on the John Hancock building whereas the signal for WTTW was on the Sears Tower (at the time the tallest building in the world). They were able to reach the WGN signal faster to change its frequency back to the station unlike with WTTW. Who knows what the hacker would have done had he been on the WGN signal longer.

Actually, if I remember correctly, it was up against The Cosby Show... The show got it start Wednesday night after Moonlighting (I remember because I could get a VHS tape and record two awesome shows) for it's first half-season. Even with the impressive lead-in, it didn't do THAT well. But there was fan support so ABC signed it up for a full season but put it on against The Cosby Show (Thursday Night @ 8:00). When it failed to achieve decent ratings, they cancelled it. My favorite thing, though, is that there was one episode that was not aired...until the early '90s.

I do remember the sudden cancellation right before he completely disappeared. I remember asking my mom why he was canceled with her simply responding " he's rude and he's creepy". What's funny is that my mom worked for Sears and every year I was forced to participate in the Pompano Square Mall's " back to school cuz it's cool" fashion show. Back then each of the stores had their own fashion Consultants which was basically a homosexual who liked to dress the mannequins. One of the only reasons I remembered 1987 was because that was the year they dressed us all like Max Headroomish. I remember them shellacking my hair down to my skull. I had to wash my hair like three times to get that shit out of it. I remembered later when the Movie Honey I Shrunk the Kids came out my mom pointing out that the one old white guy was actually Max Headroom but I was more interested in the guy from Ghostbusters.

The 90s was the start of the internet. Yeah you could connect computers together to communicate through phone lines but it wasn't until services like AOL and other providers in the 90s started building that server backbone and the browser software that ran the networks that connected you to web pages on other servers or computers that we started seeing the internet.

William & Mark Sheppard brought to life characters I would grow up to love, as a child & as a teenager. Gods among nerds, indeed.

"In this episode of gone, but NOT forgotten." Had to be: "In this episode of gone, but forgotten." If it was not for these type of videos, no one would have thought of this brilliant spiritless "digital" spirit. Or, as Dr. Alfred Lanning would say it: "The "gostless" gost in the machine."

Honestly.... you had me RIGHT UP to where you were talking about making fun of Tucker Carlson. Why couldn't you say media? I was a sub, but the fact that you are bringing ONESIDED views means Im out on this. Too bad. I really wanted to give a thumbs-up. Next time drop the Bias and mention ALL MEDIA: CNN, MSNBC FOX NETWORK etc. you just proved you are Channel 23....... but this was a very good episode I do miss Max and think it should be brought back

Yeah back when MTV was actually Music Television, meaning a channels dedicated to all things music, PRIMARILY music videos, back when MTV WAS 'THE' channel to be switche onto to watch those fine, creative, and outlandish videos that went with the music... With NONE of the crap that is shown on the channel now.... Idiot producers and.... Cough cough 'Creative' cough 'Content creators', and greed messed that up... 😒 Oh them were the GREAT days! And Max Headroom! Man he made me chu-chu-chu-chuckle a hell of a lot. And that Art Of Noise Paranoimia... COOOOOL! 👍😏 😎🇬🇧

I want Max to come back as a Twitter voice, a Twitch presenter that yells at the people in chat, and yes, a p-p-presidential cand-d-d-didate-ate-ate. -ate. I want Max Headroom for President instead of Trump; who else could out stupid that orange blob? MAX HEADROOM!
