I just fell in love with Xena. I barely watch any TV most of the time. There was something about Xena that magnetised me. My daughter and I are having a rewatch atm. We’re in early season 2, so a while to go. There were lots of things I loved about it but I think looking back the heart of it is how Lucy Lawless played her. There was amazing chemistry between her and R O’C. but LL was so intense - she seemed to become Xena. I’m glad they ended Xena when they did. It had covered so much mythology, History and Geography. They’d done Comedy, Tragedy, Time Travel and Reincarnation of characters and even a couple of musicals. Xena as a show was very diverse for the time, with many people of colour, LGBTQ characters and unusual roles for women. It was a clever imaginative show but it had said everything it had to say. Season 5 was taken over by writers from Hercules who did a poor job and had to be replaced; plus Lucy Lawless was pregnant in real life and that had to be catered for. The sixth season was a lot better and also had slicker production values but there was a definite feeling that the peak had past and that they were revisiting old storylines to wrap them up eg what happened to explain the end of the centaurs and of the Amazons. I didn’t like the finale much. When Fates Collide would have been a stronger ending. A Friend in Need was like a pale imitation of season 3’s The Debt. Xena was revolutionary for her time. A female war criminal fighting for justice and against her dark side simultaneously. A the risk of sounding cliched, Xena was truly iconic.

Love this! But I have to say, I felt that Gabrielle's story arc was handled beautifully and headed in the direction it needed to go. She was able to use her brains in the first few seasons to help out, but as things got more dangerous, she knew she had to start defending herself. This was due to the fact that Xena wouldn't always be around, and with her association with Xena, was always going to be a target. She generally would always try to use her brain over brawns even after she became exceptional in her fighting skills, meaning she used violence as her last resort. Even then, she refused to kill unless she had to. Then it ended with her being the only one to be able to carry on Xena's legacy of protecting the innocent.... Oh it was so beautiful! Definitely always go back and forth between Xena and Buffy being my top favorite tv show! I also wanted to point out that the Callisto being reborn was so beautiful. A perfect example of coming to a complete circle in their history. Xena took away her parents, Callisto took away her child. They were both given a chance to live the one thing they were denied... a family. Just ..... beautiful.

Xena remains maybe my favorite show of all time. The amazing character arcs, the overall theme of introspection (of herself and Gabrielle and their bond), the wonderfully relatable flaws each character had, etc. I crack up at cynics who want to write Xena off as “cheese”, yet salivate over the MCU films (which don’t possess half the layers and depth that XWP did). Xena was awesome! Because of the characters' depths (in most ways, it was actually Gabrielle who grew the most), it rapidly outpaced the show from which it spun off, Hercules, and no wonder why! Whether you were the Xena with baggage to learn to let go of/make up for or the Gabrielle who learned to step into her own strength, or even the Joxer who may be clumsy awkward but the heart of a lion, you found someone to relate to. And when Honest Trailers references Xena in regards to The Witcher, that was just fabulous. (He said The Witcher was meant to be a new Game of Thrones but was actually the new Xena...and it is in terms of Geralt and Jaskier on many levels, lol)

The episode where Xena publicly apologizes for what she did to Callisto and Callisto has a moment where you can tell she's mourning over the life she never got to have still guts me to this day. That's good F-ing writing! As for my favorite episode I forget the name but it's the one where Xena and Gabriel go 25 years into the future and we see old man Joxer The Mighty and meet his son. Xena was revolutionary back in the day, yes, but it's insane to me that it's still relevent. It was a truly imaginative show that wasn't afraid to push the boundaries of what was acceptable on TV. For instance, it had musical episodes before Buffy and explicit LGBT storylines. It wasn't to shock viewers, unlike some TV shows with nudity or violence. It was rather about sticking to their vision, whether it be through visuals or controversial social themes. There are few old or modern TV shows which dared/dare as much as Xena did. For instance, mainstream TV still sometimes struggles to write female characters and it definitely doesn't often tackle trans themes, yet Xena did both without blinking.

I actually started writing a fanfic combining Xena and Sliders. Since Xena doesn't give a crap what century she ends up in, I decided that there was a world where Alexander the Great didn't die young, but conquered all of Asia and made his way across the Pacific to North America. Fast-forward 2300 years, and that's how the Sliders could meet Xena, Gabrielle, Ares, and Autolycus in 20th-century San Francisco. The Xena characters are traditional, though - not dressed or acting modern. I got the idea for this story from a Sliders episode where Rembrandt tells Arcturus and Quinn that if they ever slide into a world where everyone speaks Greek, they'll feel right at home.

Please read at least three books of the Bible Genesis, Mathew, and one you chose yourself. Remember to open your heart to the possibility enough to be genuine and do the inner work. Start by forgiving family members. They’ve loved you. If you can’t forgive them, who? It’s important. To be forgiven we must forgive. Please break down before Jesus Christ and ask for forgiveness. The Bible is truth. Jesus Christ is lord.

I watched "Xena" as a student and it was the best brain distraction after hours and hours of lectures. Seasons 3-4 were pure gold and it was unbelievable how many great characters were created in such low budget production. Xena, Gabrielle, Joxer, Callisto, Autolycus, Aphrodite. This show was simultaneously so much (sorry) silly and yet funny, captivating and emotional - it was example of perfect flavoured potato chips for brain. :) Empty calories, but still delicious. :D P.S Joxer deserved better. You are being sarcastic, right? I absolutely hated EVERYTHING about the Roman-centric episodes, especially that bullshit about Livia. While there were female gladiators, there are NO circumstances when an Empress (or even an aristocratic daughter) would ever have appeared in the arena). As someone who has studied Roman history for over 40 years, these episodes are utter abominations. Yes, I know it's not a documentary, but having Xena meet Octavian before he was Augustus - the Battle of Actium was in 30 BC and Augustus was murdered in 14 AD, then blithely skipping over the entire reign of Tiberius (14 AD-37 AD) so they could have an episode with Caligula (41 AD) - and I wonder if the producers knew enough to skip Tiberius because he was actually Livia's eldest son with her first husband... Those 25 years Xena and Gabrielle spent frozen in the ice cave can't begin to make up for 70 YEARS of history, and that doesn't even take into account the whole thing with Julius Caesar and Cleopatra. GMAFB. Though they actually did get it right when the broke the legs of the crucifixion victims. That was done in real history to hasten the process, as the victim would suffocate sooner rather than later (from not being able to support their own weight). The forensics of crucifixion is actually rather interesting.

@Shan_Dalamani3 жыл бұрын
@@bettyp5669 Of course it never pretended to be historical. I know that, with its playing fast and loose with including bible characters that never existed. But when they got into the areas of recorded history that has actually been verified through primary sources and archaeology, that's where I draw the line between fun and shredding history and giving impressionable viewers the idea that things like female Emperors were even a thing in the Western Empire, never mind that bullshit about Livia - a historical figure who was much older than Eve, was NOT anyone's adopted daughter, came from a well-respected patrician line herself, and would never have been caught dead making such a spectacle of herself as Eve did. So go roll your eyes all you want. Xena was fun when it stuck to myths where the historical and anthropological juries are still out. When it completely made a dog's breakfast of the Roman Empire stuff... people would ask me if that's actually what happened, and I'd end up giving an impromptu history lesson to people who already had trouble wrapping their minds around the fact that the entire life of Jesus did not happen between 1 BC and 1 AD.

This was a great video. Your assertion that Lawless was a huge past of the shows success is accurate in my opinion. Believe it or not there are alot of Lawless less or Lawless light episodes in the series, largely due to the fact that she was physically injured in earlier season and was not on it much. Said episodes generally are far from amazing. Gabriella turn as you mentioned oddly happens over the series and somehow overnight, so yet it wasn't executed that well. I didn't care for the 25 year ago flash forward in the final season. I also didn't like Ares that much, but Kevin Smith was devilishly awesome. He was fantastic. Overall, if was still very good show.

Many people credit Buffy the Vampire Slayer's "Once More, with Feeling" for popularizing live action musical episodes, as they should. But I think Xena's "The Bitter Suite" deserves more recognition for blazing that trail.

@@Nepthu I wouldn't call it a ripoff since both were done differently enough. TBS was more of a story arc finale (the rift between two characters is resolved) while OMWF was basically the turning point of the season (rifts between several characters are created).

I absolutely loved Xena and still watch the show on streaming to this day. However, the late 90's-early 2000's had many female lead action series: Buffy, La Femme Nikita, Relic Hunter, Sheena, DarkAngel, Witchblade, Alias, and a couple more I'm forgetting. But as much as I appreciated Xena for its depiction of a strong, capable, and (somewhat) complex female warrior, I took issue with the fact that the writers felt the need to make her a lesbian. As if a woman can't be feminine and strong. Fortunately, these days we have multiple examples of strong, feaarless and feminine warriors on the small and big screen. So glad that the DCEU got Wonder Woman perfect.
