@c3cubed3 жыл бұрын
@@filipeamaral216 Good satire doesn't have to slap one in the face with winks and nods nor be critic-pleasing pretentious or deep. It can be subtle, like an afterthought, and is at its best when the subject matter presents itself with a linear, (seemingly innocent) underscore of 'seriousness'. The brilliance of "Network", "Thank you for Smoking", and "Wag the Dog" also come to mind. Verhoeven's cheerful 'Nazi youth' overtone, in tandem with his "Yoo vant gvuts und gore Amerika??!! - here it is 'een spades!" couldn't have been a more clever allegory to perpetual war-loving, socialist regimes. When I first saw "Idiocracy", my initial reaction was "it's a great horror movie", simply because the premise is quite plausible, and the beginnings already quite apparent (a fraction less) than 500 years hence. In short, most any film that leaves a permanent imprint triggering discussion years after the fact, has a unique degree of quality. In the very least, it becomes a 'cult classic'. As a masterpiece? That of course, can be subjective, based on one's interpretation.

It was great special effects wise, but so forgettable (Josh Brolin and Kim Dickens have major roles in this movie?!?!). I think there just wasn't enough Verhoeven world building. IMHO if the military pressuring the scientists and their motives was amped up, this could have been up there with The Thing and The Abyss (which could be done with existing footage and editing new scenes in as the original cast would not be needed to add... idk... maybe some scene of the Joint Chiefs deciding on how ethical this research is or if the POTUS should even be informed). The casting was a bit off for me too as KB and ES were associated with more coming of age and light hearted movies at the time, but that's more of a Me Problem; [their] performances were good. It isn't an easy name to pronounce, as it's Dutch, but the "OE" is pronounced like the "OO" in food and the V is shorter. Dutch is a very staccato language. To ears it sounds like Vvvverhoevvvvven. Not hating on the narrator, just explaining the pronunciation. Verhoeven being Dutch is a reason he doesn't give a shit about violence and sex, because the Dutch really don't. There's legal prostitution, age ratings for movies are just a vague suggestion, South Park is aired uncensored all day long. It's not a sex crazed hell hole, just not prudish or shy. Turkish Delight is based on the book by Jan Wolkers, who's oeuvre is like this all the way through. The Discovery of Heaven by Harry Mulisch is about a guy being the second coming of Christ, and there's a ton of violence and graphic sex in the book. Both writers are considered some of the best as well. Mulish also wrote The Attack, about the Germain occupation of the Netherlands. Super violent but considered a must read classic, pretty much from its release. Our movies are less prudish in general, sex isn't seen as bad or wrong here, nor is swearing. His movies are par for the course almost.

you gotta love how many people use the term "misogynistic" against people for featuring nude women in films. how exactly does using naked women in films mean he is prejudiced against women? huge groups of "organizations" have weaponized definition to better suit their narrative. war of semantics. NOT having ANY women in your film because you think they are just ALL bad actors is misogynistic. and loved the documentary, you did a great job.

17:40 The best part of Showgirls is that you don't need to know the opinion of the person talking about it. You just need to evaluate his/her words. If he/she says: "it was a commercial failure" then you know that person didn't like the movie. First, it's only very sexual for American audience... Second, nobody can deny that in theaters, the movie was a failure. BUT, especially at that time, a movie was evaluated on what it can bring in the theaters but also on VHS/DVD sales. On that market, it was a huge success. The movie cost was 45 millions but generated at least 140 millions of revenue. What a failure!!!! Third, it's an allegory of Hollywood, from an outsider point of view, but not just any outsider, from an European's point of view. And there is a lot to laugh about. Just think about the last viral video: magnet supposely sticking to people's arms. Do i have to believe that Americans think Hulk is real because he is starrring in several movies? Anything on a video is real, no?

I always thought that Starship Troopers was filmed from the viewpoint of a commercial ("would you like to know more?") and that all that is shown, including the acting, was filmed in a way to sell a product (the war). Even the main characters are cast like the beautiful people you see in commercials. Rico and Carmen look literally like sculpted Ken and Barbie dolls.

To me, Paul Verhoeven is the reflection and antithesis to Stanley Kubrick. Both show the flaws, and dark sides of human beings, capitalism, and the world as a whole. But Paul, when his movies end, they offer glimmers of hope for change for the better and that there’s still good in certain people. Well, unlike a majority of Kubrick’s films which really make the viewers sad, or even outright nihilistic.
