WTF Happened to Total Recall?

Most would agree that Paul Verhoeven's Total Recall is one of the best two or three Arnold Schwarzenegger movies. It's definitely up there in the pantheon of great action movies, with it standing the test of time very well over the years, with not even a lousy remake taking the shine off this gem. Ultra-violent and often hilarious, it's Verhoeven at his most unhinged, with Arnold Schwarzenegger playing Douglas Quaid, an ordinary guy who just might be a secret agent from Mars named Hauser. Rachel Ticotin, a young Sharon Stone, Michael Ironside, Ronny Cox and more show up in this action extravaganza, which boasts a fantastic score by Jerry Goldsmith. It's a favorite of ours at JoBlo, and in this episode of WTF Happened to this Movie, which is edited by Diane Baldwin, written by Eric Walkuski and narrated by Mathew Plale, we dig into what makes this such a classic.

When I was 16, my sister and I went to see Total Recall in the theater. I can remember like yesterday the place erupting in laughter when Arnie used that guy as a shield on the escalator. The violence was so over the top that the crowd didn't know how else to react. I still react that way. 2nd favorite Arnie flick (after "The Terminator", of course). First saw it at like 6 years old on VHS (with that AWESOME Terminator 2 teaser trailer playing before the movie started. The teaser where we see the endoskeleton being built in Skynet's factory). The eyes bulging effect used to scare me as a kid (I've even had nightmares of being sucked out into the vacuum of mars atmosphere) but I kept watching it anyway cuz this movie is so badass. When people bring up Arnold, usually the "big 3" are Terminator, Predator, and Commando, but this one, while thankfully not overlooked, IMO has more going for it than people realize. So glad I've been cable to see it in the theater twice over the passed few years.

@@Vaporvice84 Yes, the two movies are totally different genres. I agree with your sentiment about disliking movies that try to "please the masses," but IMO, that idea is similar to "pop" music. @crookedtool I think "Prince" might be one of the few gifted artists that was both tremendously talented AND was able to appeal to the masses. As for James Cameron, 6 of his 8 films are all sci-fi. Now, Titanic proved he could do love stories and period pieces, but I sometime blame the success on that film on both it being released in the winter, and girls/women between 12-40 all fawning over Leo at the time (as well as that damn song being played on both the radio and mtv/vh1 100 times a day for probably as long as the film was in theaters).

The premiss behind "Total Recall" is not as far fetch as one may think. If we ever get the technology to plant memories could we give you a vacation lasting 6 months, in a few short hours? Not sure how long the trip to Mars took in the movies. Think about it this way. Tell me everything you did and said yesterday? Word for word step for step. Now tell me what you did 6 months ago. You would not have to plant 6 months of vacation into your mind taking 6 months. Just bits and pieces. Like this movie did with you. At the end you felt like you had experienced what the main character did. You may have felt that way with a lot of movies you saw in your lifetime. (Some movies you felt like you had spent a lifetime watching them. Gods did I feel like that with some. "Honey is it over yet?" Shhhh sit back and shut up. This is just the first 20 minutes.") It is possible for false memories to be planted. Another thing I love about this movie is each of us walked out with a different opinion, none of us were wrong. Was the main character a secret agent? Or Was his mind making the whole thing up? For the rest of his life he would be stuck living in a hospital bed with this fake life running. Was his mind making this up and he was stuck on an endless loop, reliving this story over and over and over. Forgetting that he had already done this. (Like the TNG episode where the Enterprise relived the same day over and over) This was one of the better Sci Fic movies I've seen. It would be an interesting conversation to have over dinner or just coffee. What are your thoughts?.

What happened to Total Recall: *Number #1:* It was remade into a crappier film. *Number #2:* Arnold went into politics to be a Governator. Well, he crapped on the people that put in office. Then he totally crapped on the other side of the aisle by cheating on his wife who happens to be a Kennedy. Once a dynamic liberal family name in Democrat politics. He cheated with the maid by getting her pregnant. *Number #3:* Since leaving the Governator behind. He tried a comeback on silver screen. He tried an action *"superstars vehicle"* called *The Expendables.* Plus two *Terminator* film that were worst than *Terminator 3.* Basically killing off that franchise. *Number #4:* With much clearer eyes & his invisibility of doing no wrong shot to hell. You can tell that Arnold Schwarzenegger wasn't a very good actor. And now you can't separate the real man for the character he's portraying on the video. All you see is Arnold Schwarzenegger. That's not good for an actor.

The movie was great especially when you realize that most of the movie was just an "Ego Trip". He selected the Ego Trip whose name was "Blue Skies over Mars". Also, Arnold picked his love interest, the fact that the ending is pretty much fantasy, and the director pretty much wanted that outcome as well. I'm glad they didn't have him wake up at the end to keep it from seeming like a shaggy dog ending.

(10:45) When they were shooting the people walking past the screen (in a separate element to be used by the FX team), doggie decided to drop a chocolate treat. You can find it on KZbin. Just look for Total Recall home media extras. When they get to the part about doing these special effects the dog starts to pop a squat before reaching the end of the walkway.

Me and my mate watched this last night with some fried chicken lol & we were utterly gripped from start to finish. The effects & score make this film a standout occasion. The dialogue is turgid but it suits Arnie's persona as well as the Gory action keeping you laughing throughout! This is a classic without any doubt in my mind. "SEE YOO AT THA PARTEE RIHHHCTUHHH!!!!"

Man I was looking forward to this WTF, but it didn't answer the question of how the screenwriters wrote such an awesome script out of such a short (and uneventful) story.

It's interesting how Arnold understood how important marketing was. SO many movies and products fail these days due to poor marketing. Push the studio to pump more money into getting the image out there and then suddenly... Product is successful. If it's a good product.. Haha...

5:53 You said Red Heat and Rambo, but the shirtless guy with the bow is not Sylvester Stallone playing John Rambo. You used a clip of Weird Al Yankovic playing a parody of Rambo in his movie UHF! It's a brilliantly funny Easter egg if you did it on purpose. If not, it's a self-own on par with the BBC using a Halo logo in 2012 when they were talking about the UN Security Council. Either way I'm laughing so hard I'm in tears 🤣🤣🤣

People underestimate Arnolds starpower. Even in this video it was glossed over with the pacing. Arnold himself made the movie go from 43% to 99% public awareness! IT HAD AN R RATING!!!! It only came in second to Ghost which is an Oscar winning performance for a fucking "arnie action movie" Total Recall is second only to Terminator 2 as Arnolds best movie and in some ways I honestly believe it's better. Seriously that sounds like a bs arnie joke but it's reality.
