The match seemed less entertaining than todays matches, short rallies and many pushes into the net. Was this due to speed glue/small ball?

+ewooll Yes, you are right. After Beijing Olympic, the glue has changed and since around 2014/2015, the ball also changed (becomes 1mm larger). The speed of the ball is much lower now. If you go back to see matches before 2000, when they still use even smaller ball, the rallies are even much fewer.

Table tennis is irrelevant for Caucasians,although Samsonov did take out the Chinese World Champion in 1997.Same in 2003 with Schlager.Schlager who was nearly a basement player beat Kong Linghui and Wang Liqin.Shows how competitive this ¨sport¨ is....
