Here's the station sign-on (voiceover by Marty Robinson) and AM Weather segment on WTTW Channel 11.
A.M. Weather was produced by the Maryland Center for Public Broadcasting and sponsored by the Department of Transportation - Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Aircraft Owners & Pilots Association (AOPA), AOPA Air Safety Foundation, Phillips Petroleum, National Business Aircraft Association Inc, Hilton Hotels Corporation, Continental Grain, Avemco Insurance, PDQ Executive Air Service Inc, and Hughes Aviation Services. Produced in coorperation with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
Featuring meteorologists Carl Weiss and Barry Richwein.
Opening and closing voiceover by Alec Webb.
This aired on local Chicago TV on Thursday, October 20th 1983.
About The Museum of Classic Chicago Television:
The Museum of Classic Chicago Television's primary mission is the preservation and display of off-air, early home videotape recordings (70s and early 80s, primarily) recorded off of any and all Chicago TV channels; footage which would likely be lost if not sought out and preserved digitally. Even though (mostly) short clips are displayed here, we preserve the entire broadcasts in our archives - the complete programs with breaks (or however much is present on the tape), for historical purposes. For information on how to help in our mission, to donate or lend tapes to be converted to DVD, and to view more of the 4,500+ (and counting) video clips available for viewing in our online archive, please visit us at:

I'm so glad I stumbled across this. I used to watch A. M. Weather on WTTW every morning before rolling out of bed. It was a great way to start the day. Does anybody remember the farm report that immediately followed it? I used to have such a crush on the woman who was one of the hosts.

I have to admit. The symbol for small craft advisory vaguely resembles a penguin at first glance, but looking closer it is a sailboat. It's amazing how your eyes can play tricks on you.

The Maryland Center for Public Broadcasting ID was a rare instance on WTTW--for many years they avoided showing PBS stations IDs at the top of programs (other than their ID) and dumped the network feed before the PBS logo ID appeared. Now the stations run their IDs as vanity cards at the end of shows and PBS requires all stations to show their IDs at the end of programs. For a while, especially during pledge drives and before the advent of "Viewers LIke You," they would change funding credits from "this station and other public television stations" to "the subscribers of channel 11."

I remember watching AM Weather when I was a kid. I would watch it religiously before going to school. It came on before Sesame Street The weather program seemed to generate a cult following amongst youngsters at time. Myself being one of them. I remember they sold an AM Weather poster back then. I still have mine. As a matter of fact, I recently framed it and have it hanging on my bedroom wall.

Of course, WTTW also produced PBS programs on their own as well, such as "Lamb Chop's Play-Along", "The McLaughlin Group", "The Frugal Gourmet", "The Kidsongs Television Show", and "Sneak Previews."

My days started with this many a time, after there was no more Top O' The Morning or Star Blazers to grab my attention on Channel 9....

I used to watch this weather report in the morning, especially on the days I was scheduled for a flying lesson back in the late 1980s, in order to determine whether the prevailing conditions (visibility, etc.) might preclude my flying that day. I can still recall the gut-punch level of disappointment when the report would indicate untenable VFR flying conditions, and I would have to call my flight instructor to tell him that, per the weather report, we wouldn't be flying that day; this was a part of the lessons itself, to instill the habit of checking weather before even considering flying, especially in a small plane. To this day, hearing the _A. M. Weather_ theme music gives me a small thrill, as if I were going to take the stick in a matter of hours and cheat gravity once more (until I remember that worsening cluster migraine headaches interrupted my flight training permanently, alas).

Going up in Chicago, I never missed a broadcast. I studied weather forecasting in college but never fulfilled my dream of becoming a meteorologist. But, I did become a Pilot in the U.S. Army.

It's interesting how people (including myself as a student) thought nothing of TV stations shutting off overnight. This weather report sounds like the predecessor (or imitation) of The Weather Channel (can't remember when Chicago weatherman John Coleman invented it).

+B Steven Indeed, I too as a kid growing up in the 80s remember when the local TV stations would sign-off for the night and sign-on again later in the morning, Star-Spangled Banner and all. I actually worked Master Control duties for one of the last TV stations in my town to sign-off late at night (around 1-2 AM) back in the early 2000s--i was the person who actually pushed the button to turn off the transmitter for the night :). Interesting to see that it's now all 24-hour programming nowadays, what with most TV control rooms becoming more and more automated over the past 10 years...
