Nonduality as the foundation of self defense? This is really an absurd thing to say. Nonduality is when the mind moves beyond all forms, phenomena, thought, and differentiation. To do martial arts means you must engage, and to engage means you must differentiate. This idea of nonduality is so misunderstood and misused. It's the new buzzword, as if most people get it; they don't. Perhaps to be a great master artist it helps to remove the sense of self and dwell in consciousness, but consciousness is in duality. It takes years of intense work to find the source of the self to know any of this; an intellectual idea isn't the same thing.

Ah. Yes. Whenever I talk about emptiness, there is Bodhidharma to whack me in the head with a stick. One way to look at it is that Zen is the most painful path to enlightenment. Another is to see a martial art as meditation with immediate biofeedback.
