Bahb is totally right that it makes no sense to buy an Android phone just to emulate games. But for those of us who already have an Android and an 8bitdo controller, it's a lot harder to spend another hundred bucks on a dedicated emulation box. Great video!!

IDK. I've been emulating games on my new phone and I'm thinking more and more about changing it to a higher end in order to have more power to emulate other games. The greatest thing about it is being able to emulate different brands of consoles in the same place. I was thinking about buying a Switch, but now I'm more inclined to spend the same money on a high end smartphone than in a portable that will only run Nintendo games.

I think a really important thing to note though over the dedicated handhelds for emulation is that the phone is so much more flexible. It's like the argument pc players make that you can use it for a lot more. Want to play android games too? Cool. Want to set it up to listen to podcasts or music, if you have limited space on your main phone this could be an option. In a pinch when traveling, if your main phone dies you can just throw your Sim card in this (pack a sim ejection tool), and you have a fully charged device. You main phone breaks, you can use this one in the meantime while you wait for a replacement.

I don't like to use phone for emulation because i prefer to not spend battery with games, just save it for another uses and emergences. I like to have my phone and 1 portable with me. Some times i carry my PSP, sometimes New 3DS, Ps Vita, but never Nintendo Switch, it's too big. Even the PS Vita I think is big, close to my limit size. I used to use ípega 9087 for emulation, but the high input lag and my way of thinking that I just mentioned made me just abandon it, along with deleting all the emulators from my phone.

Exactly... I just needed another phone to have a backup for all my 2-step authentication crap. The way I had things setup, if I ever lost my phone, I'd lose access to everything. Not anymore. The fact that the 2nd phone can act as a dedicated gaming handheld is a huge bonus. I can also think of people who use their phone for content creation. It's always helpful to have a 2nd phone for extra battery-life or even to record 2 angles of the same footage, or use one phone to record yourself doing something on the other phone, etc.

I mean... considering most of the retro handhelds use *older* generations of android tablet and phone processors, it makes sense to use a phone for emulation. Most of the retro handhelds even run on a version of android. As long as you're an android user, it makes 1000% more sense to download emulators for use on your phone than to buy something like the retroid pocket. Especially if you're on yearly or bi-yearly upgrade paths. Add on a cheap plug-and-play phone controller and you've got a more powerful device with equivalent inputs, a better screen, and network capability. (For controller I'd recommend the GameSir X2 Type C on Amazon. It's not bluetooth, cheaper than Razers, and can fit any phones including larger foldables) Not only are you eliminating an extra gadget you'd have to carry around in your pocket but you're getting a more premium experience. (bigger screen + 120hz + high pixel density, bluetooth, future emulator compatibility, more controller options, more emulator options, higher quality sound, output video to anything wired/wirelessly, etc.) As far as set-up goes, I was always more of a put the different emulators in one folder kinda person. All those extra apps do is clutter up your app shelf and use up precious CPU bandwidth. Instead you can change the app image to be a picture of the console and other fun custom android things, which keeps things organized. I guess in my mind, the android OS is more of the front-end to various different things I can do on the phone. Want to play games? Open the game folder. Want to do boring adult things? Open the boring adult folder. Want to waste time? Open the social media folder.

Wolff Den: you should know retroarch has many UI themes. One theme is similar to the ps3 interface and is way easier to use with controllers. It also download the box arts for all the games. The ultimate is launch box for android. You download the individual emulators and retroarch to your phone. And set launch box to use those emulators. It’s a front end with a great UI and you can add dolphin, redream, or any emulator to it. Anytime you click a game it will utilize that emulator you specified. ETA Prime did a great video on it. Takes some initial set up but when you’re done it’s flawless and easy.

Personally I cant stand Retroarch cause a lot of the stuff you just mentioned and the stuff Bob mentioned you have to do manually so downloading the box art needs to be done manually downloading updates for cores has to be done on a core by core basis downloading cores is also kinda a pain cause If you have no clue about about retro emulation like me then you just don't know how each of the dozens of SNES emulators are different. Also not having separate settings for each emulator sucks cause you very much need to be able to change the resolution with PPSSPP also one thing that wont apply to most people but absolutely applies to me is the fact that you can't mod games that can be modded with the normal emulator so for instance PPSSPP and Mesen emulator let you mod the visuals for games so in my case I played Daxter with a retexture and I played Metroid and the original Zelda with updated sprites that make the visuals look more along the lines of SNES games. And kinda the biggest thing for me is they really don't make it easy at all to change the UI design and I can't stand the PS3 UI I never liked it for the original system and I don't like it now and Retroarch would benefit greatly from just being like newer emulators like RPCS3 or Cemu and just running in a normal program window instead of being way too extra and having a whole as big screen mode like Steam that emulates the look of a dated ass system like the PS3.

Actually, I just went back literally the day before writing this message, and downloaded an old Pokemon game and a GBA emulator and within 5 minutes, I was up and playing. One of the smartest things I did regarding emulation was using my old Samsung Galaxy A20 for emulation after I bought a more up-to-date phone. My A20 is a damn good emulation machine for everything from 8-bit games to PS1 and PSP games, and a few PS2 games too. Just recently, after a retro gaming expo, I dusted off my A20 and synched it up to my Ipega Wolverine, and I went to town. Between the PSP and PS1 games alone, I’ve been having a field day. And obviously, every 8-bit and 16-bit game you can name is at my disposal. While a Retroid or something similar is almost tempting, I’m realizing that with my Android phone, I have all the emulation power I need right now.

Great video as always Bob! I'm using a Pixel 4 XL that I got on the used market for $120 and just ordered the USB version of the GameSir X2 with the actual D-pad. The Pixel 4 can do 3DS everything you demoed in this video. Plus it has a beautiful OLED screen, and all for about $160! I think for the price it definitely beats out every dedicated emulator out there.

Also should be noted, the choppy emulation may not be the emulator itself and could be because of the age of your phone. The pixel 3a is 3 generations old now, and A-line of pixels are the budget versions of the pixels already on top of that.

This is why the Apple eco system is so much more reliable. Android over releases *on* too many devices with their software on it, even to the point that Google's devices themselves (Pixel), become outdated within 3 years... The iPhone 11 performs just as well today as it did 3 years ago. The only time this was a problem was when Apple got sued for purposely making older devices slower, via software updates, a few years ago. Thankfully they can't do that anymore. With sideloading coming to iPhone/Apple devices soon, I think Android is going to have steep competition with people who were with them solely for open sourcing.

The reason why Retroarch doesn’t just give you all cores at once is because of storage space and time. Why have unnecessary cores for consoles you’re not gonna use or have multiple cores of the same system like GBA has a couple of cores, even though they are different have pros and cons with each. Time also because Retroarch at boot up has load each core that was downloaded so if you have all cores, it’ll prob take more than a minute to launch a game which they know you don’t want to wait that long so they opted this way.

Unless you have a dedicated Android device specifically for gaming, a point against using my phone (personally) is if I'm gonna play a retro game, I like to enjoy it in a dedicated space without notifications to distract me. But at the same time I don't want to turn off notifications in case I get an important text or something similar. I still wanna have my phone on, just... Over there. So either a dedicated emulation device OR... I prefer my retro games on the original hardware, with maybe some mods thrown in. It's a lot more niche, yes, but the nostalgia factor and the satisfying feeling of popping a cartridge in to play it makes it worth it for me. Actually having the physical game makes me a lot more committed to finishing it, too. (Looking at you, Steam backlog)

It's actually fairly simple to run emulators on IOS. You have to sign up for a developer account, but that is free and it lets you sideload apps that will stay on your device for 3 days. You can run a server on your home pc that renews the license every day (simple guides exist to set this up) so that you can keep using it, or you can pay 100 dollars to keep your "development apps" on your device for a year. This let's you sideload whatever you want to an ios device without jailbreaking it or voiding the warranty. I sideload several emulators onto my 12.9 inch ipad pro with the a14z bionic (precursor to the m1) and the thing is so powerful it demolishes everything you throw at it. Very impressive really. Connect a ps4 controller and you can easily emulate gamecube at 6x native resolution and full speed.

So I kinda messed up my PS Vita and was looking at possible replacement retro consoles for a few months now. Was looking at all the Anbernics, Powkids, etc etc. and even thought of getting a new PS Vita. But I discovered the RG353V and saw how it runs emulation through Android. Suddenly it occurred to me that I have a Samsung S10 lying around which I can use (and pair with my PS4 controller). The ultimate best thing with this setup is how RetroArch for Android can let me map my ROM, BIOS, and SAV folders to a network location! So I mapped everything to my NAS and now I pretty much have a retro gaming system in my local cloud.
