The actual dev tools (using Lua and/or C) are actually available to everyone and an emulator is included, the problem with that is that you actually need real hardware to test performance since the emulator runs on your PC, with faster CPU, memory and SSD

I'm surprised they weren't able to leverage a technology like Docker to test running it locally at limited specs to simulate a real device. Maybe they have though or planning to do that. Obviously still not the real thing, but would be closer

I'm sure this has been said before, but this feels like a modern take on a Game and Watch. Super long standby with a clock, the crank reminds of the strange gimmicks a lot of Game and Watch models did, highly limited but creativity inspiring screen, and a super small and charming design. Even the game distribution method of getting new games just on it feels like a logical progression of a device with a single dedicated game.

I preordered one last year in August. I was watching a few minutes of your video and then decided to go look at the SDK and see if I could do something basic. I’ve been developing a web game for several months now and figured maybe I could port a mini version to the PlayDate. I had zero familiarity with Lua, but I’m already pretty deep into development on my game within just some hours. I could easily port my game in less than a week’s worth of concentrated work. Mind you, my game isn’t inherently that complicated, and I designed it to be relatively platform agnostic to begin with. But I was pretty surprised at how easy it was for me to get in and make significant progress.

It'd be awesome if these types of clueless takes didn't crop up every time like clockwork. No offense, the problem is not ONE person doing it. It just isn't viable, it's like kickstarting a water bottle that fills automatically from morning dew or something. Have some sense aobut how technology you use actually works, we pollute way too much to be this ignorant, in this language we type in. Killing some more chargeable batteries by fiddling with a crank recharge is not something we shold be looking into for our novelties. The whole notion shouldn't even enter a person's HEAD without immediately starting to wonder how it COULD be viable. Not this, "hurr, I've seen dynamos that look like this before, so my monkey brain hopes there was a dynamo like that here, too". And I do mean OUR universal monkey brains, as humans.

I just discovered this and it looks awesome. Root beer game looks adorable af. But for 180?? No way. I'd buy it for 50-100

If this device could play GameBoy games in real time, I would most certainly purchase one as an everyday carry option. I especially loved the size of the machine, perfect for the pocket!

I guess they'd have to map the start/select to one direction on the crank? I think the other button is for the system menu/lock screen.

Lol just because it's immaculately designed doesn't mean anyone's stupid enough to pay 4 times the price (at least). Edit: no backlighting? gtfo

I really don't understand the choice to not have a backlight, could be $20 more expensive, and 1mm thicker. please add a backlight

I'll get one once people figure out how to mod in a backlight, or they produce a backlit version. I don't have good lighting often enough to make it worthwhile rn sadly.

On linux devices (and on Android to some degree) you can just sync a folder up with your computer with Syncthing.

Kinda happy I’m group 5 because by 23 it will be more refined and more people will be messing with them and doing cool stuff by then. It’s group 1 rn I’m not sure if group 2 shipped but it’s still mad early stages so I’m not gonna hate on it yet. Has plenty of time to develop before I get mine
