Ocean City honors man who jumped off bridge into bay to save infant

Ocean City honors the once anonymous hero, Jonathan Bauer, who jumped 30 feet off a bridge to save a baby. The rescue was captured through dramatic pictures of the car crash on Route 90 in Ocean City and a boater’s shaky cellphone video.
Shortly after 2:45 p.m., five vehicles collided on the Route 90 bridge, sending a pickup truck careening toward the guardrail. The truck ended up teetering over the edge of the 4-foot wall. Upon impact, firefighters said a baby - still strapped in her car seat - was thrown into the Assawoman Bay.
14-year old Alayna Oertel was behind the wheel of her family boat when she spotted something strange near the bridge.
“I saw that there was the truck over the guardrail and my first instinct was to go look and see if there were people there. So, I told my dad to take over and I pulled out the life vests," said Alayna Oertel.

I went over that bridge an hour before it happened and when we Heard about the crash on the news me and some friends road our bikes to the bridge and saw the cars it was crazy I frogot my phone on the beach so I wasn’t able to get photos but my friends did but was crazy. And when we were eating at dead Freddys later that night alomst the hole restaurant was talking about it

He didn't even think twice, he saw the baby had turned onto her stomach & was drowning. It was all he needed. Telling his daughter to wait for the fire department & police. He simply jumped off a bridge & crashed into the murky water. Within moments he is holding the baby in his arms. I'm surprised the baby survived the fall as well. This man is a hero.

This happened right behind my wife and I as we were leaving OC that Sunday. What no one is saying is how darn cold that water was. I'm sure he didn't feel it from the adrenaline rush but that needs to be said. This guy awesome.

I saved a girl from drowning at a waterpark that I worked at as a lifeguard. The mother ran up, grabbed the child and ran away. Never said a word to me. I still think about that little girl every day.

Wow! What an amazing rescue! Plus, an accident victim saved the baby that could have drowned if he hadn’t jumped and saved her. This is a great group of people and we need more news coverage on these stories. I’m impressed with the love and care of everyone including the captain or whatever rank/ position he is in, of the official that is running this news gathering. He got extra water and napkins and patted the hero on his shoulder. He seems to care so much and value all the responders and the families involved. Great goodness! Who is cutting up onions? My daughter Kelsey saved her brother in ocean city md when he was about 10 and she was around 21. He had got caught up in a riptide and the lifeguards didn’t noticed but my daughter swam over and literally saved her little brother. They were both weeping when they got out and I was so thankful to my daughter and the good lord above. He would have drowned I love my daughter so much and to think she didn’t think twice she was also entangled in the riptide but she knew what to do to save them both. God bless that little girl and the man and his family who saved her precious life. It’s like everyone was where they needed to be when this terrible accident happened.

I felt him when he talked about hearing the sirens and knew someone was there for his own baby. This all probably happened so quick , but he knew he had to leave his own baby to save another. This is a beautiful story and im grateful to hear this awesome act of humanity and compassion for this babygirl. What a great man and little girl! This man didnt pull out his phone and start recording and didnt hesitate to jump off a bridge! He just acted! He is a hero and set a great example for his daughter! I'm proud of him! Our first responders dont get enough thank yous either...thank you for responding and being heros as well!! Prayers for the baby girl! This could have ended so much worse and I'm so thankful it didnt. This is the kid of ending to a real life experience I like to see! The individuals in the boat should be more recognized too! They got the baby and the man out of the water and quickly got them to the first responders!!
